We've received word that Apple is beginning to ship the new 27" Thunderbolt Display to stores and resellers this week. This means that customers should be able to see and buy the devices very soon. We haven't yet heard any news about early customer orders shipping, but expect those to follow closely.

The new 27" Display adds Thunderbolt compatibility, allowing the displays to act as as docking station using a single Thunderbolt cable. The new display includes a built-in FaceTime HD camera, 2.1 speaker system, three USB ports, one Firewire 800 port, one Gigabit Ethernet port, and a second Thunderbolt port to enable daisy chaining.

The new display also allows the ability to run two displays off of a single Thunderbolt port on Macs offering enough graphics horsepower to support the pixel load.

Apple introduced the new display back in July. It is presently available for pre-order for $999.

Gotta get me one of these.

Why is it, though, they show the Mac Mini attached to the display with just a Thunderbolt cable. You can't power a device through the T-bolt cable, can you?

I'm pretty sure the T-bolt is the only connection between the Mac Mini and the display. However, both devices will also have their own power cables too, if that's what you're wondering.

I wisH it has a speaker out jack so I only need two cables to connect to my laptop. I use my own speakers so I have to con rectify directly to the laptop itself.

Nice. Now give me my "anti-glare" version and I'm sold x2. :D

Exactly why I am now using a Dell 27" monitor. And as long as there is no anti-glare iMac I'd rather replace my old white iMac by a mini.

If I want to see myself, I look in the mirror.

Pffff.

When will they start selling the non-display guts of these things as a break-out docking station with a DisplayPort/DVI port and all the other interface bits?

More importantly, will someone else now be able to release one of these if Apple doesn't?

I want a dock for my macbook pro, and the 3rd part solutions to-date have been poor.

a single (or 1+power) cable solution to connect when i get to the office would be ideal, but there's no way I can talk IT into what they will see as a glorified 1,000 dollar docking station.

They get dozens and dozens of displays from Dell or HP every year, and the truth is that there is little to no difference between the Apple display quality and the better ones from competitors.

I'd have better luck talking them into a professional 10-bit display than this Apple one. Of course, that wouldn't solve my docking woes.

Would be nice to see the 30" or larger ACD back. Hopefully with a matte screen version. We, professionals would appreciate very much.

I wish they worked on PCs as well.

I would love one for my ASP.net development.

That thing really does not deserve 999 dollars.

I will wait for price drop or might as well as go for 27 inch imac.

is there going to be a good performance concerning the UI animations when connected to a macbook air?

Matte would be better...

Too bad Apple is in love with glass, maybe that will change with a future imac/display design.

And for those with just plain 'ole Mini DisplayPort? What are are options, O never-failing Apple?!

Is Mini DisplayPort dead?

Yes but you can still use the thunderbolt displays, albeit without the thunderbolt benefits (display only).

You can still use it as display only if you desire.

ahhhhh that explains why I couldn't find any reviews/unboxings of it on youtube earlier today - cause it hasn't been released yet

I am guessing that the Thunderbolt display won't work through the existing mini display port, right? Basically meaning I can't use one of these on my Mac Pro.

I've been wanting to get a Cinema Display for awhile, but it seems so weird that I can't use the latest and greatest display because my Apple computer can't support it.

If you're in the market for a 27" monitor at 2560x1440, you'll have a hard time finding one that costs much less than 999 big ones. This was my conclusion before I got the last-gen ACD a while back, and I stand by it now. After buying that ACD, I was also pleasantly surprised by the audio quality of the speakers and sub-woofer too. I ended up scapping plans to buy a 2.1 set for the computer, which would've set me back around $150-200 (that was the budget I had in mind). I know I got my value for $999.

The new ACD has only more features than the last gen, no features removed (correct?), and all this without a price hike -- in spite of significant increases in consumer prices (and the cost of living in general) over the past few years. I'd wholeheartedly endorse the current ACD, as long as you don't have a compelling need for a matte screen. Different ballgame there.

Edit: point well taken about the $854.69 UltraSharp, but I note that it's showing $20.49 for shipping there too. Has anyone here done a side-by-side comparison of the UltraSharp and ACD?

A Dell Ultra Sharp of that size will cost you $949.

The Dell have better IPS screen with non of the yellowing issues found on the imac. It also have lots of more ports including VGA, HDMI, DisplayPort, component, composite, DVI, USB and memory card reader.

At around the same price, I'd go for the Dell over the Apple display.

Anti-glare on the Dell is also a bonus.
