The current Mac Pro does not support this display. (It looks like Apple finally removed the photos showing the display next to the Pro from their website.)

When are we getting a Mac Pro update?

I would buy two of these... if my computer supported them. I doubt there's hope of a third-party solution to add Thunderbolt display capability to old kit. I really don't want a Dell display when this 30" Cinema Display eventually dies...

That thing really does not deserve 999 dollars.

To be fair, most displays with similar 27" panel costs closer to $999 (some even higher). Dell maybe a bit cheaper ($949 + tax + shipping from Dell or $875 with shipping from Amazon), but in few months, Apple will also sell on non-Apple websites for closer to $900 with shipping.

I do wish it came in matte instead of glossy but that said, Apple's Thunderbolt display does offer many additional benefits over competing products, such as FaceTime HD, Thunderbolt hub, decent set of speakers, and MagSafe charging for portable Macs. Not to mention better styling.

Now that the Thunderbolt display is out and shipping, I wish Apple would have a FIRE SALE on the old 27" Cinema Displays...I would like to grab one of those at a big discount (none of my machines are Thunderbolt-equipped)...but Apple has continued to have the old 27" MiniDisplayPort Cinema Display priced at $999 since the new display is announced.

Anybody have any idea if Apple will be running ANY kind of sale on the remaining stock of non-thunderbolt 27" displays??? I'd like to know.

Maybe $499 might be an attractive deal :D but that is pretty wishful thinking.

agreed, hopefully this is coming in a few days to order... one can hope...
Will this work on a non thunder bolt mac (ie my macbook pro using the mini display port, in terms of getting the picture?)

Edit: point well taken about the $854.69 UltraSharp, but I note that it's showing $20.49 for shipping there too. Has anyone here done a side-by-side comparison of the UltraSharp and ACD?

Perhaps not here but the comparisons are available on the net. Here is one useful link and quote from the linked article:

For one, Apple uses LED backlighting whereas the U2711 sticks with CCFL technology. But isn't CCFL worse? That depends on what you're after; the iMac 27 offers a 72% color gamut while the U2711 has a 102% color gamut (based on the CIE 1931 standard). Using RGB LEDs, it would be possible to get a similarly high color gamut, but our experience with RGB LEDs to date is that they cost more and consume more power than regular LEDs, so we can understand Dell's interest in sticking with the "older" technology.

Want anti-glare

Still rockin' the 30" anti-glare and it looks great. Never want the shiny junk, so will have to go Dell when the time comes.

I will wait for price drop or might as well as go for 27 inch imac.

27 inch IPS displays from other manufacturers typically cost the same but with less features and lower quality case materials.

Why? You can do better for this amount of money.

Nope. $854.69 on Amazon right now.

Those alternatives don't have all the features included in the ACD.

Those alternatives use a cheaper plastic body and are not a TBolt docking station.

Even prior to being a docking station, the ACD was a better deal just due to build materials.

The only reason to justify getting one of the alternatives was if it was at a heavy discount.

what's the deal with 16:9?

i'd rather vertical real estate over horizontal any day.

Going to spend about 8k on a new 12 core Mac Pro and 3 of these...oh wait...nevermind.

Agreed. A new Mac Pro is well overdue. I know they are waiting for the latest Intel processors, but to anyone who does not know this, it looks like Apple are just not bothering to update their machines. At least do a minor update to bring out Thunderbolt, or bring out a Thunderbolt card for the current models. I don't see why Apple have to do this 'one update a year' thing.

What I heard is that Dell applied a bit too much anti-glare, so small fonts have that sparkling effect. There's still the NEC 27" that comes with a display calibrator (PA271W-BK-SV), however it costs $1500+, and I believe OS X does not have a true 10-bit video driver for it. Without a 10-bit driver it's not worth the extra money.

I do not consider "better styling" to be a correct designation for a big glossy monitor.

Good industrial design involves styling that supports the function of an object.

I had heard that the processor has to support Thunderbolt for it to work. That there are no expansion cards that can add Thunderbolt to a machine -- at least none from Intel.

The screen in the 27" has not been updated for a long time, unlike Dell monitors. There is also lots of imac users on the forum with yellow tint issue.

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/824940/

My imac also have slight yellowing issue, so I'm sure there are better displays out there.

Ahh so it's exactly the same panel then, I thought it would be better in some way (Higher Gamut etc) being a stand alone monitor.

Well quite a few instances have seen that Apple became a consumer electronics company and said bye to PROs. Still remember Final Cut Pro X? Another meaning of "Final Cut Pro gets XXXed (****ed)"!

Exactly why I am now using a Dell 27" monitor. And as long as there is no anti-glare iMac I'd rather replace my old white iMac by a mini.

If I want to see myself, I look in the mirror.

Pffff.

I really don't like the way the power cord is attached at a 90 degree angle, but the thunderbolt cable is not. What is the point of that? It's the same way on my 24" Cinema Display and makes absolutely no sense at all. You end up with a situation like the in the photo, the power cable looping around and looking much less neat than it could. Perhaps Apple is saving money on parts?
