I'm still undecided on mine... picked up the 2711 for a sweet 850 (CAD) during boxing week, meaning it was 200 less than the acd (1049 edu price in canada, even with our dollar at par or better)... got it yesterday and while I think it is a nice display I'm not sure if the AG is causing my eyes to be sore or if it is the sheer size over my 24.... and the brightness on this thing is crazy, why so bright dell? At least i have a few days to mull it over and see if it gets better or not...

I know some people really don't mind the AG coating found on IPS screens, which is totally fine. That being said, imho if you are making an $850+ investment, you shouldn't have to "get used" to anything. If you don't fall in love with it out of the box, I would strongly recommend returning it for another display you know you'll be happy with.

And if you aren't interested in the Apple LED Cinema Display 27", Samsung is also readying a new 27" 2560x1440 PLS display. From what I understand, PLS displays should be cheaper to manufacture than IPS displays. And I'm praying Samsung won't use the horrible coating that DELL used on the U2711/U3011.

What's the model of the Samsung monitor that you're talking about?

I love the convenience of have an Apple cinema display. I'm always traveling, and I keep my power cord in my laptop bag. When I come home, there is just one cable w/ 3 prongs (usb / monitor / power) that gets my laptop fully connected. Very elegant. With my old dell display, I had to have 3 separate cords, and I'd have to grab the power cable out of my bag. It may sound silly, but there's a lot to be said for elegance.

30% off U3011

Thanks to R.Perez I was able to use that code and get 30% off the Dell display today via phone order. Dell offers a 21 day trial where they will pay shipping both ways, the way I see it I have nothing to lose. For the single cable fan, Mini Display to HDMI is a beautiful feature on the new 17" MBP. Looking forward to getting the new display, the henge dock and testing it all out. Cheers!

Just got my 27" ACD in today. First impressions are very high, we'll see how it is when the sun is out tomorrow...

I'm not sure how the Mini DisplayPort to HDMI cable equates to having a single cable (since it doesn't account for the power and USB), but you should be aware that you cannot get the full resolution of the U3011 via HDMI. The monitor limits HDMI to 1920x1200.

You're better off just getting a Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable.

You beat me to the reply. :)

Using HDMI on U3011 throws away 1/2 of the available pixels. It would be a very poor decision.

If you really want a ACD get the 27" is much better then the outdated 30" display.

I've owned an Apple 30" ACD, currently own a 27" and have used various Dell 30"ers. I'm perfectly happy with my 27" ACD for several reasons, which are as follows:

- iSight is built in, so I don't need a third party webcam and the loss of a USB port that entails. I have an old Apple iSight kicking around, but the quality is far less than the new ones built in to laptops and the ACD.
- I don't need a billion inputs. One for my Mac Pro is fine, as I happen to have a pair of HDTVs for my consoles and other bits and bobs. I don't plan to need another input either.
- No horrible anti-glare coating. The Apple 30" had quite a mild coating, but I noticed it now and then, but Dell's U2711 and their 30"ers have a very aggressive coating, and it drives my eyes crazy and adds "grain" to everything. Horrible. I have seen some brave souls who actually chemically strip this coating off, resulting in a standard glossy panel, but that is too far for me. I know my 27" ACD is a mirror, but my lighting is controlled and it doesn't reflect.
- I bought my 27" for a shade under £750 on Apple Education. Dell's U2711 is actually a higher RRP by far than this (£899 AFAIK), and although the Dell is frequently on sale, I gained the iSight and MacBook chargers as well. I didn't feel like I'd been ripped off at all.

The 16:9 vs 16:10 debate is pointless. Even at 2560x1440 you have a very large desktop, and the panel is cheaper than the slightly larger 2560x1600 monitors.

Ditto!

Love my 27" ACD, it has been fantastic to me. I have seen and used the 30" ACD and it was really good for it is time but far too outdated unless you can pick it up for cheap. Nothing from Dell has interested me ever since the customer service nightmare I had with a previous display I bought that broke.
