I also broke my plastic clip :( Will there be any problems now? The card works finde and i think its not so important. Or will i have problems with other cards now?

I broke it too for Slot 1 and Slot 2. Don't worry everything will work fine. No you can easily switch your cards if needed.

I have a original Mac Pro dual dual 2.66GHz Xeon processors with the NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT,

Does this mean I can just buy a 4870 and be good to go? What is the cable you speak of regarding to the X1900 card connecting to the motherboard?

Thanks you!

Yes, the Apple 4870 should be instant use for you. A PC card has to be flashed unless you buy one from a pirate who sells them over priced on Ebay.

The cables they speak about are two PCIe power cables that connect with the sockets on the logic board. Your X1900 uses one of them. The 4870 needs two due to higher energy consumption.

What are the cards like? Any overheating or fan troubles?

Also anyone know where i can get one shipped to the UK from the US?

cheers guys :)

The card has a proper 2 slot fan with heat pipes. It is said to be noisier than the Nvidia 285 but should be ok for most users.

The Apple card is available from all Apple sources in the UK. A PC card you will get at every Dixons.

Thanks for the reply, i think i'm going to have to buy the overpriced ebay ones as i've never flashed a graphics card before and wouldn't know what i'd be doing.

They do not have the Apple mini display port and do not work in VGA, HDMI and HD audio. So be warned if you need such features.

Thanks gugucom, you've been really helpful. I only need DVI and my audio goes to Focusrite Saffire so this should be fine.

Thanks again :)

I know a guy in Germany who would flash them or would sell you a flashed card. So you would not have the hassle with the import duty and VAT. I'll send you his email by PM.

Hmm if anybody knows someone in the US who is willing to do this without charging exorbitant prices, please PM me. thanks!

Experiencing problems

I just inserted the 4870 and noted that there is a screen flicker every 15 seconds or so. Never did this on the 8800 and does not do this in bootcamp. Anyone know what might be causing this? I am plugged into the dvi port.

The 3870 and the 4870 are vastly different in power use and cooling. The 4870 necessarily has a much better cooler. The 3870 can be improved by a passive Accelero or by a state of the art 2 slot heat pipe cooler like the Akasa.

Yeah I figured as much. I have the 3870, and am replacing the fan with the accelero, i cant stand the noise anymore. mind u, i have two 3870s and 4 hard drives inside my mac. heat and noise is driving me nuts. it feels like a G4 Powermac Mirror Drive.

Hi!

First of all, thank you all for the information provided yet.

I have a MacPro1,1 (2x 2.66 dual core) with a XT1900. which is way too loud for me. So why not a 4870? :)

a) Does the card still work under SL? (read sthg about 32bit code)

b) As I'm working on 2 monitors, how could the 4870 handle 2 DVI displays? 1st over DVI and 2nd over a MiniDP <-> DVI adapter?

Thanks!!!
