Anyone got a new problem in YouTube of a blank screen for a few seconds when transitioning from ads to content and back? Almost like the framerate is changing and the Apple TV is switching frame rate (why not QMS Apple!?)
I see the same with the latest YouTube app, it's annoying. I would like to keep the "match frame content" for all apps but YouTube, not sure it's possible.

Same here. The problem started today so I assume there was an update to the YouTube app. It is really annoying because you miss as much as 3-4 seconds at the start of every video you watch. Other apps like Netflix can do the frame rate switch without any problems like this. So it's definitely YouTube that messed something up.

Netflix rarely has any content at the beginning of a video. Youtube is much different in the way content is produced. And if you don't have Premium, you will get the switching in the middle of videos unlike Netflix. Youtube isn't exactly doing anything wrong (although they should probably force commercials to the same fps as the video).

Sorry but there is no way you can convince me that skipping 3-4 seconds of a video is not doing something wrong. And I don't think Netflix skips anything at all at the start of a video. Though it's a bit hard to test because, as you say, videos on Netflix don't have much of interest at the beginning. Maybe Netflix simply delays the start of the video a few seconds?

I do have YouTube Premium so I don't see any switching in the middle of videos. I've used YouTube a lot on Apple TV and I have never seen this behaviour before. So something has definitely changed.

This is definitely a regression with the latest YouTube app. And an annoying issue. Hope they will fix it soon.

It's an interesting situation. It is caused by the Apple TV being set to match frame rate and the videos having different frame rates from the ads / UI. This means when the TV detects a different frame rate, it has to switch over to the new one which is that 1-2 second black screen with no sound. The only ways I see this of being fixed are

  • Turn off Match frame rate
  • Apple enables the HDMI 2.1 feature QMS. This might not be possible and require a new Apple TV model and in any case will require a TV supporting it (likely an "HDMI 2.1" TV)
  • YouTube plays adverts at frame rates to match the video content to prevent the switching (either by having different versions of the ads or converting on-the-fly
YouTube are unlikely to do anything unless their advertisers complain, which to be fair they should: if you've paid Google for a 6 second advert but people only see 2-3 seconds that's not great. On the flip side, if this only affects Apple TV viewers (a niche) who have Match frame rate turned on (smaller niche), advertisers are unlikely to find out...

But what has caused the change? Youtube must have done something recently. I have used the Youtube app on Apple TV for years and have never had this problem before. And I have changed no settings that I'm aware of.

Yup! This issue just popped up a few days ago for me. I have an AppleTV 4K (newest version) and a LG C1.

It's likely that when Google recently updated the YouTube app to support the Match dynamic range feature (i.e. HDR now works on Apple TV without having to have HDR turned on globally on the Apple TV), they also added support for Match frame rate

Terrible blank screen w/audio issue this week after the latest YouTube update.

YouTube is one of the worst apps on tvOS. Not surprised it's a total mess. Part of the problem is that Apple does not hold these guys (YouTube, Prime, etc.) to tvOS UI guidelines and just allows the big devs port their terrible web apps to tvOS as-is.

What a mess I have premium and every video now shows blank for 4-5 seconds while skipping the first few seconds of the video

Upon selecting video just press pause straight after until the match content switch has been done.

I don't have premium and this is a terrible user experience since the last update. I hope they will disable this feature or at least give the option to turn it off in the app. I still want to be able to use the content matching with the other apps.

I’m having this same flicking issue with my ATV 4K gen 2 and LG CX with only the YouTube app. I just turned off match frame rate and range until YouTube remedies this. If they do.

You could keep your Apple TV's match framerate on if you set the default to 60fps (not 59.94). It would then only switch for 24fps content which is not too common on Youtube. I'm not sure Google can do much to "fix" the issue other than perhaps not switching framerates for ads.

However for those of us in the UK pretty much all adverts are 25/50fps.

I just tried that and still see the switches between ads and videos. Some ads are at 24hz, contents are at 24, 30 , 60 from what I can see in the YouTube stats. (I’m in the US)

Wouldn't that fact that this problem did not exist until the last update indicate that it is fixable?

But then the other problem existed before the update in that YouTube didn’t match frame rate or match dynamic range.
For those functions you had to go into video settings and switch to the appropriate settings manually.

It didn't do content matching before. This is the feature people have been wanting. It is actually working as intended. It's just the nature of short videos with inserted commercials causes a lot more switching than most services where it may happen once every 30mins to 2 hours. I do think they can do things to improve it though. Just a simple setting to disable frame rate matching or fixing how commercials are inserted.

Was wondering why the YT app had started playing up!

Turning off matching dynamic range and frame rate fixed the blackout between ads and videos for me.

There was no issue before the change. I don't know the details but youtube videos don't tend to cause issues with judder/stutter (or whatever it's called) unlike movies on Netflix etc. So all they really need it to go back to how it was before. That fixes the problem.

They could disable the frame rate matching when playing ads. Who cares if the ads have stutters ? :)
or a setting to disable it entirely in Youtube. I hope they are at least aware of this user experience issue.

It doesn't 'fix' the problem. You couldn't watch HDR before because it didn't switch. And there are 24fps, 50fps, 30fps, 60fps, etc videos on Youtube so frame rate matching is still useful.

I have just never had any issues before with mismatched frame rate on youtube. But mismatched frame rate on movies in Netflix is a serious issue for me even to the point of causing motion sickness in some movies.

I guess you're right about HDR. I don't think there are many HDR videos on youtube though? Personally I just always turn HDR off since I see very little value in it.
