I wonder is it will come with GLSL1.3 and an iTunes 10 version that doesn't suck.

I'd say if it hasn't appeared earlier on - it is too late for them to make major additions given the time scale required to test it. It would be interesting to see whether Apple is holding off giving OpenGL a major overhaul until Lion because if Lion continues to come with OpenGL 2.1 the idea of moving to the Windows world is more tempting by the day.

Apple seems to be consistently putting "Graphics" in their list of things to work on nowadays, so i expect there to be improvements with 10.6.5. Wishful thinking? Maybe. But based on their mention of Valve and Steam at the "Back to the Mac" event, it would seem they know that gaming has come back to the mac (pun not intended, but it works).

The next step is for apple to make a gaming computer. I think they could do it. It wouldn't be such a stretch. It would consist of a Mac Pro, minus the "pro" parts, in other words, no XEON, no ECC RAM, no fibre channel, etc.

This is a whole lot of testing. :p

Why does it seem like a higher number of test builds than usual? Maybe I'm just noticing them more lately. Not sure why. Higher than average reporting on these builds?

Most likely they want to get it right and retire from maintenance of 10.6 as much as possible. That doesn't mean that 10.6 development stops just that after this release it will likely be security fixes only.

That is my guess based on watching OS/X development for a few years now.

Please make it a good release, Apple. As I see no reason to be switching to OS X Lion, I want SL to be the very best it can be.

How can you say that when they haven't spilt all the beans with respect to Lion? Really Steveo demos a few features of Lion and you think that is it? That even after Apple has said they will be releasing more info about Lion in the coming months.

Frankly I don't know what the issue is with Mac users and their reluctance to updates. You still hear people saying they won't upgrade to Snow Leopard because nothing is new in the OS. This denys the fact that SL fixed a lot of bugs and in some areas dramatically improved performance. I really don't get it.

Especially given the price and how stable it was for most after 10.6.3

One known issues is compatibility with the newly released iLife '11. After installation, iTunes/iPhoto/iWeb/Garageband/iDVD crash upon launching. It's going to be a while before 10.6.5 is released, and it will most likely be released alongside fixes for iLife '11.

My iMac is 3 years old. I'm not upgrading to iLife 11 so I don't need the latest version of OS X. Simple as that. No philosophical problems with upgrades, I simply don't need any more bells and whistles. SL does everything I need.

Graphics drivers were better 2 seeds ago. Oh well.

True, maybe a Mac Gamer Edition or something along those lines but it would require Apple to team up with ATI and nVidia to provide EFI enabled video cards, develop a generic driver so that Mac OS X doesn't crash when the driver isn't present to support the video card and work to get OpenGL up to date so it is OpenGL 4.1 compliant. I could see it taking off if they had the right focus but something like the above seems to be outside of what Apple is interested in.

Agreed; in many cases it is better to wait till the applications you rely on have been extensively tested with a new version of Mac OS X instead of taking the plunge only to find your work flow does down the toilet quickly because of bug specific to running the application on that version of Mac OS X. For me I waited til Mac OS X Snow Leopard was mature (IIRC 10.6.2) before taking the plunge although Lion I might wait a little longer if it turns out that the added features are gimmicky crap as shown by Steve Jobs.

How can you say that when they haven't spilt all the beans with respect to Lion? Really Steveo demos a few features of Lion and you think that is it? That even after Apple has said they will be releasing more info about Lion in the coming months.

The problem people like me have is that of all the features he could have demonstrated he chose gimmicky crap that I'm not interested in. Why did he talk about features of a substantial nature? it seems to be a hap hazard put together presentation in desperation to show that Apple still gives a crap about Mac OS X and traditional computing. Sorry Steve, I'm not convinced, you relegated Mac OS X to a second class citizen for over 2-3 years so far and you suddenly come back claiming you suddenly care about us Mac OS X users? Apple better deliver something awe inspiring after treating their Mac users like crap for the last 2-3 years because the Windows world is looking more tempting all the time. Take a hint Apple, at least Microsoft can chew chewing gum and walk at the same time, something Apple seems to be incapable of doing.

Because for many of us moving it is more than just dumping a new operating system on the computer, it also includes software which one relies on for work flow - new releases may fix old bugs but also introduce new. This isn't an attack on upgrading but about being cautious and knowing the right time to make the move versus just going for the upgrade simply to keep up with the Jones.

True, I could see that happening but to what extent will 10.6 be stopped early because it is a transitional release rather than a major release. I hope that Lion brings 64bit kernel to the mainstream, improved OpenGL - but my hopes aren't high given the gimmicky crap that was shown off by Steve at the presentation.

Compatibility. Tons of us use Macs in a professional environment where everything *must* work 100%. We're still using 10.5.8 in the TV studio because half our stuff is broken on 10.6.

It is broken as in non-fixable or is it a matter of having to upgrade to a newer version? I have heard some complaining from third party vendors that there are bugs in Mac OS X that Apple simply refuses to fix which kinda goes back to what I said about Apple not being able to chew chewing gum and walk at the same time.

Not sure, we're not going to buy new software just to make it work with the new OS which we don't need.

Interesting. What system you running? Mac Pro5,1 Hex core here, 10H562 update was much less stable than 10H542. Tried everything but eventually had to roll back to 10H542 and everything works well.

iMac9,1. 10H555 gave me serious stability issues (iWork, QuickTime, iSight busted) but this one is rock solid here. Plus, the non-translucent menu bar colors were changed, looks quite nice. Did you run the reversioner?

Yeah. Hmmmm. I'll give it another go. I installed iLife '11 applications separately which seemed to help (I didn't bother updating Garageband as I never use it).

Never noticed the non-transulcent menu bar colours, mostly as I didn't have much of a chance in using it (skipped 555 and went to 562 as well)

Well I really do hope that graphic drivers will see some serious improvement because Steam gaming experience is still horrid in OS X.

Make sure you run the reversioner before doing the combo update (no rebooting inbetween) - I didn't do this going to 10H555 and that might have been the issue, but I have no idea.

I believe you're right. I failed to do so in a rush. Haven't had the chance in giving it another try. Thanks!

I agree; the worse part is that many of the games ported to Mac OS X really show that they're ported by how badly they perform and how buggy they are. Civilization V has been announced for Mac but what is the chance it'll suffer from the same bugginess as Civilization IV? I'd say the likelihood is pretty damn high!

Lion for me is the last chance I'm going to give Apple - if they don't present the goods then I'll be looking to the Windows world. It seems to be that Apple doesn't give a crap about their Mac side of the business especially when one considers the lack of any balance between iOS and MacOS X with their propensity to allocate developers at Apple to iOS at the expense of MacOS X.

Thanks for everyone's help, ran the reversioner as I must have forgotten in my rush during the first update. 10H562 works like a charm.

I checked out the non-translucent menu bar colors you mentioned, but didn't see anything different.

EDIT: Are you referring to the highlight color of the drop down menu(s)? It does seem different or maybe I'm seeing things lol
