Apple has started accepting iOS 4 applications ahead of the June 21st release of iOS 4. Formerly called iPhone OS, iOS 4 is the rebranding of the operating system that runs on the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. Version 4 introduces many new features for developers and users that may require modifications to existing apps for full compatibility. Some of the features include:

- Multitasking
- Folders
- Improved Mail App
- Enhanced Enterprise support
- iAds
- iBooks

Apple claims there are over 1,500 new Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) available for developers. iOS 4 will be available to iPhone and iPod Touch owners for free on June 21st. iOS will not run on the original iPhone or 1st generation iPod Touch and will only run with limited features (no multitasking) on the iPhone 3G and 2nd generation iPod Touch.

I really hope iOS lives up to the expectations... It has a lot of them. It really needs to catch up to the rest of the mobile world.

I just love how I NEVER get these emails. No junk mail filters, using a mobileme address too. Registered developer since 2008

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7E18 Safari/528.16)

Lol, and here we go.

I'm looking forward to ios 4. I don't know if I'll be buying an iPhone 4 (recently having a lot of trouble with AT&T so not sure I want to lock myself in for another 2 years with a high EFT), so I really hope it runs well on the 3gs (unlike os 3 on the 3g).

It's running beautifully on mine.

Does anyone know what some of the book APIs are that are included in "over 1500 new APIs"? (Besides the ones for multitasking)

As a developer, I'm still trying to gracefully figure out how to use iOS 4.0 features (mainly multi-tasking) and support the new Retina display without flat-out requiring iOS 4.0 and leaving out all 3.x users to dry. It leads to a major headache in bug testing.

What I'm trying to say is, for users still on 3.x, don't upgrade immediately to apps that say they support iOS 4.0. I have a feeling a lot of apps are going to crash because of some obscure bug that cropped up in their code (it happens). Particularly, trying to deal with running out of memory on the device and having an app forceably quit on itself.

Just a warning from one developer to the public. 🙂

And here I am, stuck with a 1st generation iPod touch. I'm also not upgrading until the 4th generation, hopefully with almost all the features of the iPhone 4.

I'd like to know the percentage of users who own iDevices that can't be upgraded to iOS 4. 😕

I really hope they have another build of 4.0 ready to hit the public in 10 days, because 4.0 GM release candidate is buggy enough to be a disappointing launch. Several apps do not work well (despite Jobs rant that using Apple APis prevents this), and many including Safari can take up to 5-10 seconds to initiate a connection to the network.

I feel for you also I have a 1st gen iPod touch. I was initially taken aback when I heard I couldn't run it but when I thought about it and realised that it wasn't that unreasonable considering how old mine was I was just glad I waited to upgrade!

I'm sorry, I just had to note that the first sentence of this article is the only new bit of information in the whole article 🙄

This is funny, on my 3GS, I am seeing a nice speed improvement overall, very consistent visual transitions, and really the quickest safari loading yet.

Also, safari is setup for multitasking, so I never leave where I was, no need to cache or reload anything.

I am really looking forward to the new apps that can use multitasking. I am excited!

Not sure if everyone else is experiencing the same thing, but iTunes Connect must be getting hammered. It's taking forever for anything to load for me. Trying to upload a couple apps and it's crawling and timing out.

Well all I know is that AT&T's Mark the Spot app needs to be updated because it currently doesn't work in 4.0. We all know we need it in some places more than others. Houston's service has gotten worse for me over the past 8 months or so. 🙁

Good...I downloaded the Gold Master 4.0 and at this point it's kind of useless for the best feature--the multitasking. At first I was like...why does Pandora not stream in the background? Is there something wrong with my iPod?

Doh.

No apps have been updated yet...
