Not really. I don’t remember seeing anyone say that about those names. Maybe a tiny number of random people, but it wasn’t a common thought
In 2006 I was working with a bunch of Mac diehards. We all came from Global Village and we had plenty of commentary on every news item and release. Most of us were in agreement that "MacBook Pro" didn't exactly roll off the tongue the way "PowerBook" did. Sadly, one of my friends in that group passed away a couple years ago.

Almost forgot, the last name of the guy who passed was Anderson. RIP.

I thought posting on MR was a serious endeavor. Should I still get the “Neo” ?
Do it

I could see this thing bogging down super quick with an inferior chip. Why not give us a small 11 inch MacBook Air like they had back in the day? I wish I had scooped up one of them. Those looked awesome.

AV1 hardware decode!

When playing high bitrate 2160p AV1 files (aka, the way I store my personal library), my current gen ATV is fine for 20-30 min, then thermal throttles and can't do it. That means I can either transcode at the server (downgrade quality), store my files in not AV1 (much more storage used for the same quality), or pause every 20-30 mine to allow the ATV to cool down... not a fan of any of those options.

Next gen should almost certainly have AV1 hardware decode, since the iPhone has for a couple years and the ATV gets iPhone chips.

Even if they somehow didn't have AV1 hardware decode, a processor that's not 5 years old could likely keep up with software decode without throttling/failing after 20-30 min.

Can't come soon enough. Been wanting this for years.

Ideally, also support for Dolby Vision 2, though maybe Apple could software add that to existing Apple TVs? I don't know the specifics of what's required there, hardware wise. I'm next going to upgrade my TV when LG has a C series tandem OLED (same as the next gen MBP or current iPad Pro) with Dolby Vision 2-- which I suspect will be their 2027 line (2026 65" and 77" C series already has the tandem OLED, and I want a 77", so I'm really just waiting on DV2 to upgrade my TV). But, honestly, I'll buy it with or without DV2, and just upgrade again if they release a DV2 supporting model in the future... AV1 playback is what I want want want.
Thanks for explaining. I often wonder what more Apple could add, and I’m unfamiliar with various codecs/files other users struggle with.

I like this new MacBook, but the current lineup (including the various versions of the M chips) makes it look like a company that can't make decisions anymore. I keep thinking Steve Jobs wouldn't have offered so many options.

799 would be crazy when we all know the new m5 airs will be about that price or 849 on prime day or black friday.

simple 12" 8/256 60hz machine for $499 is all you needed to destroy the midprice/education market other brands like google are dominating. really hope the plan isn't to create some version of a "high-end" budget machine because that's not what people are looking for at all when they buy budget machines, especially for their kids.

The 11” Air knew a thing or two about bogging down.
Damn right. spotlight indexing brings it to its knees. It's cargo pant portable and i love it but it's not a usable piece of hardware. When i have enough free time i want to really try to put linux on it but I really do not have high hopes around suspend and wifi. I doubt the new macbook will have promotion but if it does (and can come with at least 24GB) i might have to instabuy it to save me from wasting time on that project.

The A18 Pro this MacBook supposedly comes with is based on the same architecture as the M4, with the CPU core layout being 2 performance cores + 4 efficiency cores. The M4 in the just-replaced MacBook Air has 4 performance cores + 6 efficiency cores. The L2 cache is identical (16 MB + 4 MB). The GPU has 6 cores vs. up to 10 cores in the M4, but the base model MacBook Air only has 8 GPU cores, so not a huge difference. In most day-to-day tasks you'd be hard pressed to notice even a slight performance difference between these two chips.

More significant differences include features like Thunderbolt, which is something the A18 Pro does not provide. But performance-wise it should provide plenty of headroom for most users. Heck, I'd probably do some software development on it (given enough RAM) and you'll most likely be able to do some light video editing on it. It even has a ProRes encoder.

It's the Tim Cook's Apple signature move.

Introduce 'entry level' model made from components from older models at a cheaper price point followed by price hikes to the models higher up the line and/or introduction of a 'super premium model'

It's happened to almost all the product lines

iPhone SE introduced a year before Apple pushed it's highest end phone over the $1000 mark with the iPhone X, Apple Watch SE introduced before the Apple Watch Ultra, Same with the iPad cheaper 9th gen paved the way for super premium $1000 + iPad Pro's.

Now it's the Macs turn.

You also just described the iBook

I would be surprised, at least for normal users. I have an M2 Macbook Air with 8 GB of Ram & it works great for everything I use it for day to day. No slowdowns at all. I'd imagine this will be similar.

Apple appears to have prematurely revealed the name of its rumored lower-cost MacBook model, which is expected to be announced this Wednesday.

A regulatory document for a "MacBook Neo" (Model A3404) has appeared on Apple's website. Unfortunately, there are no further details or images available yet.

While the PDF file does not contain the "MacBook Neo" name, it briefly appeared in a link on Apple's regulatory website for EU compliance purposes.

The lower-cost MacBook is rumored to feature an iPhone chip like the A18 Pro or A19 Pro, rather than an M-series chip, as well as a 12.9-inch display. It has also been rumored that this MacBook will come in fun color options, like yellow, green, blue, and/or pink, and the "MacBook Neo" name certainly sounds fun.

"MacBook Neo" would slot in below the MacBook Air in the Mac lineup, but its starting price remains to be seen, with estimates ranging from $599 to $799.

The media will likely receive hands-on time with the "MacBook Neo" at the "Apple Experience" gatherings being held in New York, London, and Shanghai this Wednesday at 9 a.m. Eastern Time. There is no Apple Event live stream for this launch, so keep an eye out for a press release on the Apple Newsroom website.

Update: Just a few minutes after we published, Apple removed the "MacBook Neo" link.

The Neo is for light usages like email, surfing, Office, etc. and no major multi-tasking. The chip is not "inferior," it is Apple's lowest end laptop.

I agree that there is room for something like an 11" laptop.
But it would need to be thin and light, and therefore perhaps pricier than the Neo range.

Oh hell no please tell me this isn’t the actual official name of the new model. It’s absolutely awful.
That's what everyone said about the iPad. And like every other product apple ever shipped? Newton? Socks? Macintosh 512? Gimme a break, doesn't matter what Apple calls it. It's going to be ridiculed.
