During that time the people who wanted a tablet device were very few. It still had a full windows operating system that still is not optimized for touch. Apple recognized they needed a different operating system optimized for touch for the rest of the consumers.

I don't think I argued otherwise.

I don't consider market research done by someone in sales to be reactionary. In fact I'd be concerned if no one inside Apple was doing research on the competitive landscape.

For me though, if Apple really was a reactionary company we'd already have a larger screen iPhone, a phablet, touch screen mac, etc. And they would have rushed out an updated ATV to beat Amazon to the punch. I think in many ways Apple does live in its own bubble. And probably why some are frustrated, because they think Apple needs to get out of the bubble and bring new stuff to market more quickly.

Again, you're putting a time limit, it appears, on reaction time.

Reacting to the market is reacting to the market.

Just funny to read how 4" fanboys will never buy a larger iPhone. And that's just fine by me.

Keep your 4" iPhone for a few more years and when it will no longer work you'll always have the option of gettin' one of 'em cheap Walmart 4" prepaid phone.

This way at least you won't loose your dignity by givin' in to change iLOL!

PS: I wonder how die hard Motorola Razr V3 flip phone users are doing in their fight against smartphones :D

Even funnier to me are all the people who apparently have tiny pockets who are complaining about a 4.6" phone fitting in them.

I'm of average height and build. My S4 doesn't have any problem (with a case) fitting in my pocket any more/less than my iPhone does. THE HORROR!

I don't want a larger screen... What happened to the day when we wanted a small phone?

I phone is getting bigger and my wallet is getting way to big. Someone needs to come out with a smaller wallet.

I'll tell you what the problem is.

Today's mens pants are tight and tapered.
No wonder they are complaining, ANYTHING you put in your pockets in those style pants will be tight and too big.

Solution - Buy REAL men's pants LOL

Yeah!
I fit my 5.7" cased Note3 in my pockets no problem :D

There is some validity to all these points and I think Apple needs to do something great this time around.

I'm an Apple guy. I'll never use a Windows machine again, I've had a couple iPods, an iPhone 3G, and now a 4S. I tried a Motorola Droid X for 2 years and it was an OK phone but the OS Sucked. Constant crashes, reboots, and slowness. Android was a mess.

This year I'm thinking of ditching Verizon for T-Mobile and picked up an LG Optimus F3 - $149. Runs Android 4.1.2 and supposedly is getting KitKat at some point (I'm not holding my breath). It's a 4" screen, light and slim. Android has changed a lot since the Droid X. It doesn't crash. It runs well, and while there are some rough edges in the apps and functionality, it is a decent phone. Battery life is fine - I charge it every night like my iPhone. Yes, it's cheap and the display is not Retina quality but for $149 I don't think I care.

I actually like some of the customization - widgets are nice and seem to work well now. There are some rough edges but if I was handed this phone and said "here you go", I think I'd be 90% satisfied with it. And that must scare Apple, cause if the cheap is this good, what is the high end like?

I'm seriously thinking of an Android unit if/when we switch. Why? Bigger screen is one of them as I've been using the phone for navigation more and more. Small screens don't work for that. Look at the HTC One M8 - gorgeous phone. I find the iPhone 5 ugly - tall and narrow - it needs some more width.

I hope Apple hits it out of the park with iOS 8 and the iPhone 6 cause as much as I hate to say it, they are lacking.

Samsung, Apple and others... Please stop the evolution of technology!!! Men's clothing industry is no longer able to keep up LOL!

What Apple Needs is New Innovative Products. The iPhone this June will be almost 8 Years old. The iPhone Gravy Train is almost over. Its time to invent some new products. Just like the iPod had its run, The iPhone run is coming to a close soon.

The iPhone Gravy Train is far from over. The iPhone will continue to evolve for a long time, like the personal computer has for... oh 30 years.

And you seem to forget Apple released a new product four years ago, the iPad. But that fact would not fit your agenda, so you did not mention it.

I think your example disproves the point you're trying to make.

A comparison between ipad mini retina and iphone isn't exactly doable. iPad Mini doesn't have GPS/cellular technology, you can't use it as a phone etc. Additionally, the design process is entirely different.

A better comparison would be iPad vs. iPad mini, as they have more similar functionality, materials, and manufacturing processes. And yes, iPad is more expensive.

Tech spec shows gps/GLONASS and i'm comparing the cellular version, which basically can make calls but is muted by Apple will and not by hardware. so basically iPad Mini is fair comparison as a next immediate scaled up iPhone.

What? You really want to feel like you have a huge phone in your pockets just so you won't break it?

No, I want to feel my phone is in my pocket so I KNOW it's there so I KNOW how to avoid anything that might damage it.

Please do the following then -
Wear your iphone in your back pocket. Since yoU LOVE not being able to feel it, so you don't know it's there, proceed to your go to your car and sit down. Or sit down anywhere. But be sure to sit on a hard, wooden chair. Chances are it won't break but are you willing to take that chance?

If you FORGET your phone is in your pockets, chances of breaking it are much higher. That is my point.

And everyone has a different wardrobes. Some people prefer 4" and some prefer 5"+, different people have different needs.

4" phones still have a larger market share. It is mainly the flagship Andriod phones that have the big screen because it differentiates them from the iPhone. The Android vendors don't want to compete directly with Apple in that space which is very smart.

And not sure why people are surprised that Apple are looking at big phones. They did this with the iPad mini as well. They saw the market for smaller tablets and introduced the Mini.

And Apple has already increased the screen of the iPhone once with the iPhone 5. The reason Apple has taken longer is mainly the resolution. Unlike Android, resolutions is more tailor made with iOS and you can't just stretch it to fit any resolution. In terms of interface quality, this makes Apple superior, but Android wins on flexibility. It is a trade off.

I don't think it is surprising that Apple does market research and their designs are influenced by it. I think they just depend on market research less than most other companies.

Reacting to the market is reacting to the market.

Every company reacts to the market around it. That's obvious. I'd still like to know what Apple has done in the past 2-3 years that you could peg as a specific reaction to Samsung.

As far as time limit, based on many comments here Apple's reaction time is too slow. :)

Then just put it in your front pocket... A lot of women put their phones in their bags and I am sure they can't feel it. It doesn't make it easier to break.

You make it sound like have a smaller and lighter phone is a bad thing when there are multiple ways to get around it. Apple is not the only one making the bezel smaller and lighter, everyone else is it. The reason for bigger Android phones is the screen size, not because they want you to feel it when it is in your back pocket.

If you leave the consumers to lead your vision about the products of the future, you will stay forever in the stone age. This is how this industry works.

This might be true, but Apple HAS offered the world the iPhone and it's been wildly popular. Customers seem to be saying 'this is great! But can you make it with a bigger screen?' If the competition says yes to that, but apple say no for the sake of saying no, that's a stupid move.

Why is following feedback like 'give us multitasking', 'give us better notifications', or even 'give us cut and paste' allowed, but 'give us a bigger screen' is not?

Well, not specific to Samsung but Apple did intro to iPad mini which was a reaction to the smaller form factor tablet market.

It's too late, Apple are too slow in their updates. The competition has caught up.

June will be nothing but a disappointment. Apple have way to much to do, they're too far behind. Apple TV and iPhone need a BIG updates. And Apple just won't be able to deliver them, not for another couple of years. By which point Google & Samsung will have far surpassed Apple.

I love Apple and I wish I could kick someone's ass in their development team. But it needs kicking.
