Breaking news: MacRumors fanboys still won't acknowledge this.

I don't care what others want, I want an 2.5-3" iphone nano with one less row of apps in each dimension than the iphone 4s. 50 grams max. Just enough to do something when I need to.

So who is innovating? Why is Apple somehow "forced" to innovate when they are making 13 billion $ (net profit) each quarter, and Microsoft loses relevance, Google makes nothing new, and almost every OEM is closing the front door?

This is a business. Apple is thriving, OEMs are dying. Clearly someone is right.

You do not have the knowledge or common sense to state that Apple lost it's innovative art. Instead of beating dead horses, why not buying some Windows machine or an Android device to support those innovators like Dell, HP, Samsung, Nokia, HTC., etc.?

Google makes plenty of things that are new.

And Samsung is definitely innovating. Don't believe me? Read this http://www.cnet.com/news/samsung-gr...-wonder-material-from-the-lab-to-your-pocket/

I don't think that's an accurate statement. Larger screens aren't necc. "innovation." It's evolution. Apple has always been a competitor. Apple and every other company still has plenty of room to be innovative. The problem for some is that they expect revolution vs evolution.

If the only thing "the others" are using as a metric of "innovation" is large screens, and they're slating Apple for not using large screens, and thereby stating they've "not been innovating"... something tells me the that their focus seems to be blinded by screen sizes - I don't think Apple are the ones losing innovation abilities, somehow.

I'm probably in the minority, but I hope they still make 4" versions in the future. There's still a large group of people who would prefer easy one handed operation.

It will be suicidal if they don't offer a 4" flagship model alongside a 5"+, say iPhone 6 and iPhone 6XL. It's not a zero-sum game w/ sizes, but rather the more the merrier, something for everyone. Apple's problem now is one size (and essentially price too) fits all, except it doesn't apparently.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with wanting a 4" iPhone so whether you're in the minority is not important. I don't think the people who want a larger iPhone are asking for the 4" to be discontinued. I really don't think they care if Apple continues to make the 4". They just want Apple to make a larger phone for them. One doesn't negate the other just as one handed operation doesn't stop at 4".

Yeah, I'll probably end up getting the 4.7" model. I just know that if they make larger phones and discontinue the small ones completely, some longtime iPhone users will complain it's too big for their hands.

choice of small, medium, large usually works out best, just look at food choices and even apple memory choices on phones. it's enough choices, but not enough to overwhelm.

I would like to see a 2.5-3" iphone nano, the 4" regular, and the 5" mega. I'd rock iphone nano, ipad mini, macbook air and mac pro myself. Best of all worlds.

why are these kind of slides shown in court? How could this be some sort of evidence/of relevance? Very odd case..

Why are people surprised that Apple does market research?

Because they kept saying over and over that they do not conduct market research. Jobs didn't used to decide what to do next based on market research and he kept bringing up the Ford quote every time someone asked him that.

So the iPhone 6 base model should have a 5 inch display and come free.

If you want a smaller screen (sized to fit your hand) and more memory, pay +100/+200.

I want an iPhone 4 size screen on a phone that has all the capabilities of my 5s and future generations of phones.

I hope you keep checking back to see that you're in the minority. Apple might hang on to the 4" screen, but I don't see them ever going back to the 3.5" screen. If that's what you want, Walmart has shelves full of cheap prepaid Android phones in that size.

See, the problem with that is, there's no guarantee the money (savings) will be spent within the Apple ecosystem.

True there is no guarantee. I think it's a risk worth taking and fairly easy to do. Get rid of the 16 gig iPhone and start with the 32 GB at the same price as the 16GB phone. Even if you split the difference between the 16 & 32 gig price, you're still offering a perceived savings. Once you buy an iProduct you typically fill it with iStuff. How appreciative would iPhone fans be if Apple cut them a little slack on the price?

The alternative is a customer who is not invested in your ecosystem making a choice of going with another vendor. Let's face it, all of the quality smartphones do the same basic things.

I hope you are right. I'd still buy the larger phone if they don't offer a smaller one, but I wouldn't be happy about it. I like the size of my 4S.

As the competition bolsters its hardware and ecosystems and lower prices, they will slowly over the next 5 years eclipse Apple altogether unless there is some serious Jobsian innovation. Things are doing well on momentum now but unless magic is happening like it did under Job's watch the momentum will be over in 5 years. Mark my words.

Apple has almost $200 Billion Dollars in its bank account. Its time to use some of that money and release some new products (New Industry's). Waiting Year after Year for something new is frustrating. Im tired of the same old New iPhone 27. Where is the 4K TV? the iWatch? how about a video game console, Game Industry makes a lot of money.

You sound like an analyst or an idiot. Take your pick. Apple does not release revolutionary products every year. They average a disruptive product every 3-5 years. Assuming that iPad is their latest revolution, that puts us about 3.5 from last release. They could release something new in 2014 but not necessarily. iPhone is slowing down but that's because the high end of the market is slowing down around the world. Even if apple releases large screen iPhones, things will still slow down. They can only begin to grow further by addressing lower end of market or creating a new one. IWatch has the only chance of serving this need.

"Mark my words"

Why - who are you? what makes your wisdom so mark-worthy & profound?

Your comment will be lost, forgotten and drowned under in sea of ascii within 10 mins from now... and I didn't read anything which stood out as acute, insightful observation - all I see is (another) boring spin post, promising the "predicted" demise of Apple, and how we should all hang on every word you say... :D

I think we're beginning to see the era where Apple is no longer an innovator, but a mere competitor...

It's not fair to make that assumption until the end of this year. We will see Apple's first new product category developed and launched under Tim Cook's leadership. Depending on how innovative that product is, it will most likely indicate what Apple's future will look like going forward.

I think they realise that iWatch has nothing to do with this market and that's why they haven't released it as a phone on your wrist. If Apple takes their time with the watch, wait until the health sensors get more and more accurate over the years, they could release the first phenomenal health watch we all saw in sci-fi movies. The watch should focus on health, not on calls.

Apple makes premium products and that's why I buy apple products. They don't ship junk and I don't want junk. Apple needs to stay premium and let samsung have the crappy phone market. I would not mind paying a 1k for a phone from Apple if they make it worth it. Am I the only one that would pay more for an awesome phone?

Agree. And I hope Tim sticks to his statement saying that Apple wants do make the best, not the most.

I don't want a cheap large screen. I want an iPhone. I'm willing to pay a ********* of money but I also expect them to sit down on their butt and create something really awesome. I don't care about the size as long a s they figure out how to make it work in terms of "it just works".

Fragmentation is nothing to do with screen sizes. What single screen size do you wish to put forward for the iPhone, and iPad, and MBA/P?

MBA has 2, MBP has 2 iPad has 2, iPhone should also have 2 (4 plus 4.x). A very simple solution, with no issues as far as I can see
I'm also amazed that when osX works pretty well with dozens of different pixel dimensions, why they made iOS so hard to adapt different resolutions.
About a decade ago there was a lot of talk about real resolution indipendence for different os'. Maybe it was just too hard to make it happen...

I've read through most of the posts in the thread and a couple of things struck me.

Someone said that they only use two hands when they are holding their device in landscape mode to watch a movie. Now here's where I scratch my head and ask, who in their right mind would want to watch a movie on a 4", 5" or even a 6" screen. I may be one of those in the minority but that to me is not how I would want to enjoy a film.

I'm a database/crm consultant. I had a prospect a few years ago who said they wouldn't buy an iPhone because it would not allow them to scroll a Word document. Turned out that he regularly (i.e. 4+ times per day) would read full page Word documents on his then Blackberry device by using both the up and down scroll and the left/right scroll. I don't think that I am in the minority here when I say that is just not feasible, nor productive to attempt to read documents like that. Scan them perhaps, but not actually read them.

Both of these examples just show that no matter how devices are designed, people will find ways to do things on them that many others would look at as just being foolish. It also shows that I should have become an Optometrist. I think that there will be much larger number of people requiring eye glasses much earlier in life in the coming years.

There is no one solution for all users. Personally I don't think that most users do want larger screens. What I do believe is that many people feel 'left out' and think that they are missing something when one product has something that their current device doesn't have. But all that means is that those people will spend their lifetimes jumping from one product to the next, to the next, to the next. They will always feel that they are missing out on something. Microsoft and the Windows hardware manufacturers capitalized on that fear for years. I hope that Apple continues to do research to verify that the actual demographic target market for their devices wants something... and not just the people that will, in truth, never buy certain Apple devices yet continually criticize them.

I might be in the minority as well but I don't want a bigger screen.

Dare I say I liked the iPhone 4 form factor even better.

Cheaper? Sure there is a market for cheaper phones.

The question is are you ready for fewer features at the low end?

I am mostly just interested in how it is that Samsung gets their hands on these internal documents, and how they are allowed to use documents which they should not have access to as evidence in a court case. Couldn't Apple just say Samsung fabricated these documents?
