What are your specs on your iMacs. I have a 20" one at 2.4 Ghz and I never had it freeze on me. Then again I don't use iTunes a huge amount or run any programs that heavily use the graphics card. But hopefully they fix this problem soon.

Just over 9 hours left for that.

Does Leopard fix the freezes?

I haven't had problems since I rolled back, but Apple is pushing it for those that still have freezing.

I don't know if that's a reliable solution at this point. You could easily get another defective unit at the current rate of infection. We still need to wait until Apple states definitively what the official channel is. They've already promised to, so they will, sometime...

My iMac has started freezing again this morning after running fine on Leopard since its launch.

This problem is just bizarre. I had the freezing as soon as I installed 1.1. Rolled back, still got the problem. Then after a few days it just disappeared. But now its back.

Very annoying.

My imac has been freezing since day one (sept. 4th.) Much like other users, this has rendered my Mac useless. Has anyone received a new computer due to this?

Try Google Earth and 'fly' from one location to another. My 20" 2.4 Alu Mac froze twice, on separate occasions. No kernel panic, it just freezes. Or 'hangs', to stay in Windows terms. Bad display drivers are a common cause for freezing a WinTel box.

ATI Graphics Card

Apparently Software Update 1.2/1.3 didn't help at all.

This is a hardware fault. Time to start getting replacements.

It would be nice to have an upgrade path from the ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO. Hopefully, ATI will crank out an update before long. In the meantime, I'd prefer swapping the card for an NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT..... Apple really ought to offer this as an option, at least for the duration of time it takes to produce a fix.

I think they're considering a callback rather than a fix.

iMacs Only?

Has this only shown up in iMacs? I upgraded my G5 with an ATI card a little over a year ago and I have been experiencing something similar recently.

I want to send mine in and get a new one. This is getting ridiculous. I spent way too much money on this thing to be having this many problems!

Apple has acknowledged an iMac freezing issue that was published by AppleInsider earlier this week.

AppleInsider had noted two growing Apple discussion boards filling with complaints regarding the issue (one, two). Indeed, MacRumors' own forums have dealt with the issue.

It has been suggested that the ATI graphics drivers are to blame, as the issue became more pronounced after iMac Software Update 1.1. Both software updates for the new iMac have been geared towards the graphics drivers.

In a statement to Macworld, Apple confirms it is aware of the issue and assures a fix is coming.

Really??????, AMAZING!
None of the black shirts, or anybody at the "genius" bar at the Apple Store in the International Mall in Tampa, know anything about it at all. I said well it's all over the Macrumors site and Apple Insider has it as well. Their comment?

How about sending them the aforementioned links, for starters?

I've sent lots of links like that to some quite important Apple staff before. I still doubt they bothered to so much as look at them.

Yep. I don't think its a driver issue at all. I think it's the hardware.

Serves Apple right for going cheap on the graphics cards. If they knew what was good for them they'd cut their losses with ATI and go solely with nVidia. ATI is a company in trouble.

True, a fix would have been administered long ago. I've been wanting to purchase a second 24" iMac, and will try to persuade Apple to sell me one with an NVIDIA 7600GT 256MB. ATI had been pretty reliable up until recently.

I have a 24" aluminum iMac. The only app I had freezing problems with was Aperture. It was freezing every 15-20 minutes, especially when switching to/from fullscreen mode. After the update (1.2, Tiger) no freezing for 3 - 4 hours so far. To be fair, a couple of other changes before the update (I had no time to check their impact separately):

1. Replaced the original 1GB RAM with 2x2GB RAM.
2. Aperture was updated.

I think the problem was not a memory issue: all apps in the background were working when frozen, I could connect/ssh from another mac. Hope the update solves the problem for me!

This is good to know. Perhaps other freezes were also application specific, memory related, or both. Thanks for the info.

I'm beginning to feel the same. I have been on two hours this evening and had to restart twice so far. It is becoming pointless in trying to use it for anything because it can freeze up at any moment. This is my first ever iMac. I thought Macs were supposed to be reliable not crap.
