I’m in search of a new weather app. I used to love ‘weather line’ as its ui was gorgeous and simple. Dark sky was great too. This new iOS weather app bothers me, as you have to keep a finger on the screen too see the time on hour by hour view.

Liked Dark Sky but the accuracy of the rain forecast fell dramatically over the last 18 months..
Also its NEVER the same as the Apple Weather app and frankly I'd expect them to both be very similar so its weird they can be so different

Monopoly power in action!!! This is why we need aggressive anti-trust action by the feds. You should not be able to purchase your best competitor and then shut them down. It limits innovation and consumer choice.
See #25 above. If that doesn't enhance innovation nothing does.

Unless Dark Sky has some weather hardware/software that Apple does not have I cannot see the sense in Apple closing down Dark Sky because reading through the comments is appears many users of weather apps do not like Apple's weather app UI and much prefer Dark Sky's but now Apple is including Dark Sky into it's own weather app, an app it appears users do not like the UI. So, if there are weather app users who already did not like Apple's weather app UI, they are not going to use the app just because it incorpates Dark Sky. Apple have shot themselves in the foot with this one.

Doesn't it work mostly on crowd sourced data, for upcoming precipitation and such? I thought that's what apple was using to send me notification about rain. Apple Weather has no feature to mark that it is raining, how will Apple get this info if they shutdown the app that crowdsources the data?

Rather sad, as I still prefer it (and its UI) over Apple's hybridized weather app. Seems its day is coming.

The iPad doesn't have Apple's default weather app from what I understand, just a weather widget that links to a Safari web page - and this will pull the Dark Sky app off that platform as well.
The new iPadOS 16 weather app on the iPad is quite nice imo and it includes all the features I needed from Dark Sky.

The iOS16 weather app is finally good enough. The last thing I wanted was to be able to zoom out with the 1 hr rain radar.

i moved from Dark Sky to Carrot a couple of years ago and never looked back... but this will be a sad day when it ceases to exist, as it really was the best option, especially for iPad.
Same here.

Carrot lets users choose among several sources of weather data, Dark Sky being one of them. When the iOS Dark Sky app goes away, does Dark Sky as a source of weather data for other apps also go away?

At least this is good for Canada, in Canada I can't even use DarkSky here. It was only for US users.

I’m not sure where dark sky gets their weather info but it’s different than the Apple Weather app. Apple gets theirs from the weather channel which isn’t usually accurate where I live.
Incorrect. Apple hasn’t gotten data from TWC since iOS 15.2. The app will tell you this.

Years I've vouched for Dark Sky, was the best weather app hands down. It's going to be sad when it finally shuts down. However, the weather app in iOS 16 does Dark Sky justice and I'm happy the features/data of Dark Sky will still be around.
From everything that I can see it is comparable...but for the life of me I cant find my single favorite feature, hour-by-hour chance of rain %age...I lived by that.

You know that independent owners tend to control all of Apple’s acquisitions. None are hostile takeovers and more often than not, all the employees get to work on their product with the insane resources available to employees of the worlds most valuable company.

The owners also tend to stick around for a while. Entrepreneurs can only sit still so long without feeling trapped.

Good that the functionality isn't going away. It's my go to app for weather. I have 'Storm Radar', but it's not as informational as Dark Sky. It blows the rest of the weather apps I've collected out of the water.

This is a shame since Apple’s own sound design team cited Dark Sky as an example of outstanding alert notification sound design.
Link to that presentation:

And Apple’s weather app doesn’t have nearly as many notification options as Dark Sky with its umbrella and sunscreen reminders, etc. bummer news.

When Apple removed Dark Sky from Android, they refunded Android users the cost of the App. Will Apple users of Dark Sky also be offered a refund?

Apple's getting ridiculous. The developers of Dark Sky should write another weather app that goes way beyond what Dark Sky was. Apple must have paid the dev's really well.
