Sleep tracking in watchOS 4/ Apple Watch Series 3 confirmed.

Very likely.
But I find it very annoying to have AW on my wrist while I sleep. I tried Sleep++ and the results seemed accurate, but after a few nights I stopped using it and I'll never wear my Watch again in bed.
Maybe a sensor put under the mattress like beddit would be the best choice for me and I guess it gets more accurate data[/QUOTE]

Glad you got the joke

Fitbits tracking is still very good. Good app UI too.
I use a Fitbit Blaze. For sleep tracking, nothing comes close.

I use it every night. Beddit just recently upgraded everyone with a Beddit 2 to a 3 for free. Wonder if this is related.
I wonder if they are clearing all their inventory due to the acquisition. No Beddit 4 then :(

Can someone explain to me why we need to track our sleep? If you can't catch up on sleep, what's data after the fact usable for?

For plenty of folks, they don't sleep well at all. There are sleep clinics where those folks will go and sleep for the night with a pile of sensors attached to their body.

The clinics analyze a wide range of data which helps determine how & (possibly) why a person doesn't sleep so well.

For instance - sleep apnea. While it can affect normal weight people, it really affects people who are overweight. The danger here is that not enough oxygen is taken in by the body. Some people will actually stop breathing. 1 of my buddies was overweight, lost a ton of weight which stopped the snoring and the need for the machine. Gained weight, snoring again and needs the machine. I'm not judging anyone for being overweight btw. It's not like i'm perfect. lol

So having that data helps doctors determine if a person should have a machine to help them breath etc..
Other factors may be insufficient hormone levels which affect sleep.

Who knows where Apple will go with this, but they said they were going to keep doing more with iOS and health so this is another step in that direction.

Cheers,
Keebler

Great technology! I fell asleep reading this article. :)

Does anyone think all these self-monitoring health devices can make people more anxious by self-diagnosing?

I agree that this is a major potential concern.

However I can also see the potential merits in these monitoring devices for observing long term patterns, especially for those suffering chronic health conditions (which have already been medically diagnosed) and aiding them to better manage their condition.

In my opinion this is definitely a relevant concern that needs to be thoughtfully considered.

Having said that, personally I believe in practising good 'sleep hygiene' and that includes no devices and gadgets while sleeping.

How do I do this? I've recently moved and when I plugged our beddits back in they no longer connect to the latest app update.

people actually use these?

It's actually a great product and has really helped me dial in my sleep environment and take other things into consideration.

You'll probably get better sleep if you just remove all electronic devices from your sleep area and forget about them until morning. :)
But how will you know if you've been asleep, without an app to tell you when you wake up?

I had the same experience - got my upgrade a week or so ago. I expect that they want the sleep data. The Beddit is a great product. Can't wait to see what apple does with it.

How did you get the 3? I've got two useless 2s less than a year old at this point.

How does this track you when you and your partner are both asleep?

What about beds with those foamy pillow tops?

Hi the Fredelement - I am not sure? Beddit sent me an email. Did you register them with Beddit? You might check your junk mail?

There is an option when you first install that asks whether there are one or two people in the bed. I am not sure how it differentiates between partners snoring. It works for me.

I placed the Beddit sensor right on top of the pillow top. Works great!

I've used apps on my iPhone and my Fitbit Blaze for tracking sleep. Both give me pretty close to the same results. I've been looking at getting a Withings Aura Smart Sleep System but may hold off to see what this brings to the table.

CDC puts it at approximately 50-70 million adults.

https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/PDF/wk/mm6008.pdf

That would be closer to 24%.

But most people report sleeping less than 7 hours, which affects a multitude of things, including your overall health. Not to mention the people who report falling asleep unintentionally.

Believe it or not, teenagers need up to 10 hours of sleep.

I have delayed sleep phase syndrome. I am at my most alert in the mid-afternoon but I can easily stay up to 2am without medication. Then I sleep for 8-9 hours which makes it tough to hold down a normal job. Thankfully I have an accommodation that allows me to start 3 hours after everyone else.

I bought one of these on a whim when the first came out, but honestly I never used it. I do hope Apple continues to support it and improve on it.

8-9 hours? Sure thing buddy.
11 hr work days and 2 hour commutes don't leave a lot of time for sleeping.

Heh, I don't even wear my watch when I am at home, much less when sleeping.

That said, I am not sure if anyone mentioned this earlier, but Apple would have also gotten access to all of the sleep tracking data from beddit when they bought it over, right?

I think that's one issue in going with a small company for health tracking gadgets. You never know when or how all that data is going to change hands.
