Apple Acquires Facial Expression Analysis Startup Emotient

Quite probably for recommendations, but this would work well in a car best. If your mac TV could gauge your interest in trailers or music, it could make very good suggestions in the future or give you a suggestion in the present time to, say, cheer you up. If your car was playing music automatically and it could gauge every persons mood in the car, even to a rough extent, it would make better choices for what to play next. More than that it would be good for automatic decision making in cars full stop.

Very ambitious news, an ambitious plan and a very interesting acquisition... will end with Apple adding new emojis. Mark my words.

One thing is for sure whoever marries that girl already knows what's coming!
They can practice their daily : "I'm sorry" already.

Well that worked well, the bloke in the bottom left laughed twice and it kept showing him as "sadness".

Did you guys watch the Video? The guy with the beard doesn't look sad. His facial hair must be throwing it off.
that's the thing about beard men, you never know what they're thinking...I personally don't trust them. It may be the fact that I can't grow any substantial facial hair...

Why waste the money? Plenty of resources, even those not based online, have people all but screaming how they hate ads, how web pages are set up to shove in more ads, how ads suck up bandwidth for their 2GB/mo data plans, etc... Most people tend to go out of their way to avoid ads because everyone is drowning in them and we see everything we need to in stores to begin with. Why pay $4 for that butter when 70% of that price goes into a stinking advertisement? Play trickle down economics, nix the commercials, and let the savings trickle down to customers. Simple. Now think of how much computer commercials cost and how the net cost is split into estimated per-unit values. But that's okay, everyone can keep thinking that television is "free" too...

This AI isn't very intelligent. Look at the lady in the center in the front row. The text says "Joy", her face says,"I can't wait for this dumb meeting to get over."

My guess on the purpose of this tech...

Your camera will detect when all the people in the frame are happy and autosnap a picture. Imagine trying to get your kids to both smile at the same time. Snap... arg, only Johnny is smiling. OK... try again... snap... dang, only Jane is smiling. one more time... Snap... finally, I got them both!

Now think of that same situation with your friends or a family gathering. Point the camera, enable happy snap, as soon as everyone is smiling... boom. Done. No multiple tries. Just happiness every time.

I haven't used the new Photos app, does it still do face detection? Keywording by identity and emotion would be pretty cool.

None of the features you suggested have anything to do with a persons mood or facial expressions. The technology would be overkill for what would be needed To accomplish this. Unless you could only use the FaceTime camera when you're happy.

Unless they want 'Happiness' as another health kit measurement, showing how happy you were every time you looked at your watch. :)

In behavioral arts, this expression is typically connected to scorn. That is when someone is presented something they have a strong reaction where they place no or little value to it.

Many believe it is connected to an early childhood reaction of given food one does not want to eat. Thus, you place your lips closed and to the side making it very difficult for anything to enter the mouth. Considering she was going for the gold medal and didn't get it, she didn't value the medal she won.
Which one matches "not impressed"?

The best guess I can make for this tech is actually for the watch.

There are a lot of rumors about the front facing camera in newer models of the watches, but a lot of people would be against sticking your wrist out for very long to have a full FaceTime conversation. I imagine the watch camera will actually be for pictures/short videos/live photos and these facial/emotion detecting technologies are for Siri to interpret them (and some gimmicky things to put over the top of your face i.e. heart eyes and what-have-you). Then Siri could read these pictures similar to how she now reads a text "Running late. sad face." It would now just be something more like "Running late. picture of Sarah being sad." Or something of that nature.
