I have no clue why folks think this "big news" or "good" or "exciting!"

Apple is mostly quite mediocre at first party software in the last decade plus and awful on actual long term support commitments if you're all in.

The fact we are bringing up Aperture is example A1 of why one shouldn't trust them over the long term. All of this is ancillary for them and they'll rug pull you anytime with no care, for their own reasons.

It is?

Why?

They do this sort of purchase all the time

Well yes it is. They are creeping up rapidly on Adobe level capabilities in Pixelmator and Photomator is going after Lightroom. The image processing is not quite there at least on RAW handling yet but the tools are far better designed. If they can throw more money into it with Apple's backing then we're talking a top tier Adobe competitor here. And it'll be under a reasonable pricing model unlike Adobe's monthly mugging and cloud upsells.

Hopefully this doesn't turn into a Dark Sky situation. They absorbed that great application, but their version (the current weather app) honestly pales in comparison.

I actually prefer the new native Google weather application (on Android) over that of the current Apple example. A shame, as Dark Sky was hands down awesome.

IF they keep this a standalone application that would be Awesome! The world needs more alternatives to Lightroom, and Apple killing Aperture is something that still stings a little.

Such an interesting acquisition. Like a lot of people, I have a mixture of anxiety and excitement, depending on where Apple goes with this.

I feel like the ML Super Resolution feature in Photomator is such a great feature - it's the one thing I miss in Lightroom even. I wonder if it will be incorporated into Photos or even the Camera app itself in some form one day.

Err it's not a weather app. A weather app is a pretty client over a data API.

Pixelmator/Photomator is about 1000x larger than that. I don't think there are even parallels.

After Apple acquires them, updates are going to be scarce, and have arbitrary requirement of only supporting the latest operating systems...

Right now the iOS version support versions going back to 15.0, Mac version supports Monterey and later.

Apple has reached an agreement to acquire Pixelmator, the company behind popular photo and image editing apps Pixelmator Pro, Pixelmator for iOS, and Photomator.
Watch. Apple's going to turn Pixelmator into SaaS to drive App Store revenue

I wouldn't be surprised if they take Pixelmator's tech and roll it into Photos.

That is a possibility. Photos overlaps a lot with Photomator. And both overlap with Lightroom. I actually do light edits on my phone from my camera RAW files then export them to jpeg with Shortcuts for upload etc already. There's a lot of power in these tools hiding away. This can only be a good thing.

Disappointing.

Check out Affinity products.
Why? I agree the Affinity suite is great - I’m a happy user of all their apps, but they’ve also been acquired (by Canva) and the future of the software - especially the one time purchase model - is just as uncertain.

I’d argue Apple are better placed to keep the app business model as-is than Canva are with Affinity.

Interesting.
So “assimilate” Pixelmator into Photos? Or offer an alternative? I’d prefer the second one but we’ll have to see

And no Android/Windows version to shut down

I’d be fine if they redid the interface in SwiftUI and used the Aperture branding. I’m assuming that’s an Apple trademark, although it feels too generic to be a trademark (see: Corn Flakes).
