That’s both terrifying and reassuring.

The prospect of such a fundamental change about how we interact with technology is too alien to embrace, unless we’ve lived through the curve and slowly learned to use it.

Certainly true. Adaption to new technology and using it smartly is a learning curve indeed. Good judgement and common sense in using new tech is also important. Take for example the usage of built in microphones (wired or wireless) for phone conversations with the smartphone hidden out of sight.
You would imagine people using these in public would be aware of others around them....

People with headsets on on crowded trains suddenly saying “l can’t wait to show you”
... people shopping in supermarkets bending down talking to the meat on display saying “it’s way too big” etc....my first reaction is “huh...u talking to me?”

Guess those type of people are still waaay low on the curve with no sense of when it’s appropriate to open their mouths and when not to in public and apply common sense to usage of technology.

Apple is leveraging a clear hardware advantage over Amazon. Ever notice how Alexa can't play video and tell the time. The software runs on single core chips developed over ten years ago.

We paid for a HomePod with a super fast A10 chip and Siri is stuck in 2010. Hoping we see vast improvements this year with all these acquisitions.

You must not actually own a HomePod because Siri is a huge improvement on HomePod compared to other devices.

Google acquires Nest.
Amazon acquires Ring and Eero.

Apple acquires... a voice maker for toys? o_O

It’s not like it’s Siri’s voice that needs improving... it’s actually quite good!

Apple doesn't manufacture thermostats, video doorbells, or routers, but it does offer a voice assistant, so the purchase seems quite logical.

Siri is a POS,
Unusable except for the novice trial.
Maybe this can wake up Apple and help fix what's broken with it!

I know Siri works better on Homepod, but that's probably due to the additional microphones and processing so it can more easily tell that you're speaking to it, and what you're saying.

Pullstring doesn't do voice recognition so much as they make tools which allow you to create Alexa skills and Google Home actions.

I think Apple bought Pullstring because they want Siri to be able to do more complicated things like Alexa skills and Google Home actions, and Pullstring has already spent a lot of time making those.

Sure, the Home app can turn lights on and off, but its abilities are primitive when compared to skills and actions, and I think Apple wants to add that functionality to Home.

I think voice is totally overrated. I'm not going to dictate my quarterly report or use speech to write my book. I need time to consider, to gather my thoughts, and those pauses confuse voice recognition systems. I don't know that voice navigation is so important that Apple should spend tens of millions of dollars on it, but they're pretty smart about their acquisitions so they must have some plan or they wouldn't spend the money.

And? Google's now on their deathbed? Jim Keller worked for AMD, Broadcom, Apple, AMD again, Tesla, and now works for Intel as SVP. Did any of those companies burn and extinguish after this particular genius left them? No.
I worked with Jim. I survived his departure :). Or did I leave first? Can’t remember.

What's the deal...with Apple acquiring more startup's as of late? I would of thought acquiring companies with 20+ years experience would be better than those just starting out.

Not that's it's bad, but your more likely to let a startup go, than an experienced.

Improve Apple's shining Siri? Not possible (sarc) ... a meandering delivery boy (Bezos) blew Siri out of the water. smh

I’m not sure your premise is right. They seem to be acquiring startups at around the same pace as always. They also acquire a lot that don’t make the news.

Apple goes “we do not spy on out users as much as Google.”

Everybody goes “yeah but Siri is the worst.”

Apple goes “Okay, we’ll buy companies that did spy on people to improve Siri.”

They won’t change Siri to “spy.”

And Siri isn’t the worst.

Not what I am saying but if I ask around most people don’t think of Siri as that useful. Most people laugh when people try to use it and it is not as ubiquitous as Alexa and Google Assistant is becoming.

And no they won’t change Siri to aggregate more users data, but they will buy other tech that did that on their own to improve their own tech. Once acquired they can incorporate the tech into Siri without having to “spy” on Apple’s users directly.

They can acquire all of the companies that they like, but some how they are so far end the competition! I don't get it! Richest company in the world and Siri is as dumb as a furbee
