Surprised Apple didn't rip off the idea then booted the original app from app store like they've done done in the past. Good for dev.

Ha ha ha. We want to help as many people as we can. Just not Android (any more) $$$$

I use it. It’s meh. It used to be better than meh. For some reason it’s now rather flaky. It’s part of my “which 3 apps agree” apps.

Thank you for the well-reasoned and facts-based opinion.

Outside US and UK its forecasts are less precise. I suppose it's due to the lack of granular radar data. Here in Europe we don't have a real centralized rain radar system. Ventusky aggregates this and other weather related data quite well, though.

The idea for an app that provides weather information?

Assuming that was a novel idea (it isn't), Apple published the first weather app.

You can go to this site and enter your zip code to compare the accuracy of the various weather providers. For my zip in California Dark Sky does not do so well. Might be better where you live.

I find similar results. Its because this site shows weather data from a station 15 miles to my west.

I didn't see this coming. Hopefully it means a new weather app with radar and a weather app for iPad.

Great... They bought the most overhyped weather app on the App Store.

"known for its accuracy"

Sorry. I can't catch my breath from laughing so much.

edit: Keep giving those thumbsdown. Each person below that did has bought in to the Dark Sky marketing. Neither your phone or their API can give you a real-time hyperlocal forecast.

Totally with you. I was fed up with Accuweather so I tried DarkSky among others. Every single app I tried showed "snowing" (correct). DarkSky: Currently foggy(?)

Sorry, but if DarkSky can't figure out my CURRENT conditions correctly, how do people believe their forecasts?

Maybe 'cause your anecdotal experience is different than the next persons?

Dark Sky is good, and the paid version has some nice perks. But I actually prefer ‘Accuweather’ newly updated app in terms of how it’s streamlined and seems to have its accuracy ‘pin-pointed’ for my geographic region.

I never would've expected this. This must be an acqui-hire for sure. The devs are talented for sure and Apple loves bringing on talented folks across the industry...

actually the app itself is pretty terribly in terms of design.

clearly apple wants to roll the dark sky tech into their weather app.

I’ve used that site for many months as well and Dark Sky has always been in 4th. place for my area (AZ). As an example, yesterday was a beautiful day with not a cloud in the sky and temps in the upper 70’s but got an alert from Dark Sky during the day that there will be possible drizzle in 5 minutes lasting 7 minutes.

Hopefully this means that Apple will ditch The Weather Channel for it's data in the stock weather app. I'm a big fan of DS, so I'm certainly looking forward to see what Apple does with them.

I literally paid for the Android version last week.

This is what pisses me off. I'm OK with Apple owning stuff. I'm hugely against the fact that literally the first thing they do after acquiring an app is to discontinue any version that runs on something not made by Apple.

Would it really hurt Apple to keep an Android version around and charge a fee for it? Wouldn't it make more sense (and even bring in more profit) to simply say "Free for iOS users; Android users pay $1.99/month" or something? I know this would produce its own rage posts, but it'd be better than just saying "screw you, Android". Another option would be just making it the "default" Weather app on iOS and even calling it Weather, but maintaining it on Android as Dark Sky (with accompanying purchase costs).

i guess you don’t know the difference between A major corporation and an independent developer or small corporation!
Why would Apple take all the hassle for your small bucks?

if you use Carrot, you know that the API for The Weather Channel was removed a while back, as IBM no longer lets outside developers use their data. could be that even a company as big as Apple couldn't buy their way into keep using the same API they've used for years (after Yahoo!), so they made a preemptive strike to buy their own data for when their TWC/IBM contact expires.
