This is what pisses me off. I'm OK with Apple owning stuff. I'm hugely against the fact that literally the first thing they do after acquiring an app is to discontinue any version that runs on something not made by Apple.

There should be a law against acquiring essential data such as weather info then making it only available for the selective few. Essential data such as weather, health, natural disasters, traffic, etc. should benefit all. For example, when Google acquired Waze, YouTube, etc. they didn't give the middle finger to Apple customers.

Don't be evil Apple.

I love Carrot Weather - been using it forever because of the 5 day forecast on the AW5 and the ability to customize the application the way you want on the Watch and iPhone. The Mac OS App is really nice too.

While Apple's weather service isn't horrible, it's very basic. Weather alerts are really handy because I drive through a mountain pass everyday to work and that snows out now and then so getting snow level notices is REALLY handy.

I tried out Dark Sky but I liked Carrot a lot better. Had I not seen Carrot, would have been happy with Dark Sky.

Coming from a HUGE fan of Weather Underground back in the day when coworkers were running weather stations - before it got bought out and shut down.

Great... They bought the most overhyped weather app on the App Store.

"known for its accuracy"

Sorry. I can't catch my breath from laughing so much.

edit: Keep giving those thumbsdown. Each person below that did has bought in to the Dark Sky marketing. Neither your phone or their API can give you a real-time hyperlocal forecast.

Agreed!

I drive a convertible. Believe it or not, I prefer driving when the sun isn’t full-on blinding and blazing, so I often prefer to drive with the top down on cloudy days.

And thanks to DS forecasts and alerts, I’ve been saved from being soaked multiple times, sometimes with only minutes to spare.

Not to mention that one time I walked to the park on a mostly-sunny day only to get an alert of a fast-moving storm in half an hour, which was precisely enough time for me to walk home right before it downpoured.

Like any weather service, their accuracy probably isn’t absolute, but then neither is your comment and attitude. 🙄 Sounds more like you’re paid by someone to hate DS, honestly.

I don’t buy into marketing, I buy into results. ☑️

Those 'results' don't have anything to do with Dark Sky itself. Simply looking at the radar would have given you that same information...

"Shelter in place" seems to be getting to my dude. :D
Why would anyone this forum know that?
Your question is answered in the article (the part below the headline).
Thank you for the well-reasoned and facts-based opinion.
The idea for an app that provides weather information?

Assuming that was a novel idea (it isn't), Apple published the first weather app.
Because there aren't already a thousand free calculator apps on the App Store?
Here's an oldie but goodie from zefrank1 to take your mind away from COVID19 isolation.

Although I haven’t been using the Android app, I was thinking of installing it and I’m super annoyed at whatever policy Apple has that would cause it to be discontinued. Also (from the article):
Our goal has always been … to help as many people as we can stay dry and safe…. There is no better place to accomplish these goals than at Apple.
Wrong!

NO WAY did Apple buy this company just for their Weather App capabilities !

Very-likely has something to do with the coronavirus, & I doubt Apple even told the App Devs of their "true" intentions !

Need me to send you some more aluminum foil for your hat?

Edit: I mean it only in jest. They might have some plans for it beyond the obvious. Couldn't help myself though, sounds too "conspiracy theory" for me

What they said! Overhyped inaccurate weather with the worst radar map around!

Yeah but Dark Sky is it’s own data source. There is other sources out there. Not giving Apple a pass, just making a statement.
