So they think they can manage the Infineon team that Siemens didn't want to have anymore and now intel doesn't want to have anymore better? Coolio. Good luck!

Right, because its the exact same people as the Infineon team that was formed over a decade ago. People never change jobs, new people don't start them, nothing ever changes. Solid take bro, solid.

Makes you wonder how much more of the phones hw will they vertically integrate into themselves. I’m impressed they feel they want to take this on tbh.

US has the least Cell tower to capita in the developed world, even within Cities, Cell Tower density are still lower.
Too many NIMBYs in the US.

Seriously, I think getting 2200 engineers is a good thing. Hopefully they can continue to work with Intel to come up with some exciting new products.
Why would Apple want Intel's engineers? They couldn't design a product as good as Qualcomm's when they worked for Intel, so why should Apple imagine they will now they're employed by Apple?

1) management matters
2) they no longer have to design a product that works for everyone - they just need to target apple’s specific needs.
3) they can get help from apple’s physical design engineers, who are the best in the business
4) intel was getting closer to qualcomm with each generation.

All that money, and this is the only thing they got.

I remember the acoustically coupled modems in the early 80s.

Apple wouldn’t buy this company if they didn’t think they could turn it around... also Apple has “some code” from Qualcomm that probably can help their own new modems. We obviously won’t see these modems in this year iPhone.. but we will def see them next year.. and I can only imagine how well their modems will be 2 years from now..
Being able to now design and now basically have their own budget on how much money to throw into RND of that area.. it’s going to dwarf whatever intel was throwing at it.
They have something up their sleeve.. now let’s just wait and see what exactly that is..

Oh, stop with the code thing already. It’s just diagnostic code, not code that actually runs on the chip or is embedded in the chip.

Awesome. I can’t wait until Qualcomm is brought to their knees for years of extortion
[doublepost=1564112122][/doublepost]It’s also possible that Intel had some next gen IP that’s better than what Qualcomm has. We have no way of knowing why it was worth a billion and why Apple has a deal with Qualcomm that is time limited. Come to think of it, Apple recently lobbied for 6 GHz to be opened up for short range WiFi. It’s to complement 5G for things like AR glasses

RIP Qualcomm

There's no reason to believe that Apple will provide these modem chips to anyone but Apple. Apple doesn't provide its custom chips to anyone but themselves. Android smart phones are still gonna need modems and Qualcomm will be the primary (if not sole) provider. Qualcomm would certainly take a hit losing the iPhone side of the business but they'll have plenty of market left to be very profitable in this sector. This is great new for Apple, but bad news for basically everyone else because it means LESS competition and therefore HIGHER prices for them. Aside from Apple deciding to just stick with Qualcomm and Intel's modem business going away completely this is the best outcome.

I imagine it's the 17,000 patents that matter. Cheaper to have control over those than to let someone else have them after recent events with Qualcom. That's where the value is long-term.
Who knows what they have in mind but it's not sure the Intel business will be put on developing new 5G. Maybe they will be used to integrate into other projects using existing technology.

Rumor I hear is that originally crappy team plus crappy Intel management = even worse shape than before. I'm not the only one who's heard these rumors, search online. Intel management is among the worst, look at their other businesses.

The intel modems in my 7 && XS both performed (and still perform) like ASS.

It was so bad I had to switch carriers to be able to carry a phone call conversation. The 6S in my drawer performs way better reception wise than both of the newer phones. It can easily maintain phone calls and not suffer from random data drop outs anywhere I use it.

Apparently $13 per modem for bleeding edge and vastly superior technology was not in the budget. Its not like to consumer ends is paying $1000 for the devices or anything **facepalm**

Save your pennies at my expense. Thanks :apple:

Looking forward to more ****** performance unless they can turn that sinking ship around.

As for the poster saying its was ONLY 2-3dBm difference between Intel and Quallcom. Do you even know how a logarithmic scale works?!?!!

Each 3dBm means a halving of power.

-100dB = 100 units of signal
-103dB = 50 units of signal
-106dB = 25 units of signal
-109dB = 12 units of signal
-110dB = 10 units of signal
-120dB = 1 unit of signal

It was also tested to be a 4-5dBm difference. This means that iPhones equipped with Intel modems were receiving 1/3 the reception of their Qualcomm counterparts.

I guess one modem is getting 1/3 the reception of the other is not a big deal in your book. Of course blame the carrier.

Speaking of Europe. I have much worse performance of my iPhone 8 (Intel Modem) than what I had with the Qualcomm iPhone 6s on the same network. Same SIM card.

Can’t blame the providers for everything. Not in this case.

Nobody read Bob Swans comment?
"This agreement enables us to focus on developing technology for the 5G network while retaining critical intellectual property and modem technology that our team has created,"
Exactly what 17k patents did Apple just buy? Old, stale stuff that's not even used anymore?
"We're looking forward to putting our full effort into 5G where it most closely aligns with the needs of our global customer base, including network operators, telecommunications equipment manufacturers and cloud service providers."
To me, that sounds like they're keeping all the 5G patents that they may have, sold off the old stuff, got rid of 2200 idling employees and got $1B in the process. I guess Intel is laughing all the way to the bank.
Even if Apple will pursue the development of 5G modems using their own now acquired team, they will still have to use QC tech since they hold vital patents. There's no workaround there.
Perhaps Apple is aiming for 6G or even 7G?

It's a framework to work from and develop new designs.

None of the current crop of Intel modems in development will see release.

I think it's a good acquisition for Apple long run. Especially with 5G getting warmed up in the bull pen...
