Is anyone else having trouble logging into the iCloud website today?

My account was working fine until this morning, but now I get "Set up iCloud on a device to use iCloud.com. Your Apple ID must be used to set up iCloud on an iOS or OS X device before you can use iCloud.com"

But my account has been in use on both my iPhone and Mac for ages.

Anyone else or just me?

iCloud.com is not available on iOS. Only desktop browsers.

This is the result of years of people collecting celebrity images and trading them on sites like anon-ib. There wasn't one single 'hack' that went into the dump rather the culmination of someones trading collection.

Perfect rundown of what happened.
Image

Makes perfect sense and the iCloud story was just to cover up all of this. Sure some of the pics traded are probably from peoples iClouds.

Many Android users own iDevices. One can easily send pics to email or transfer from phone to computer. Some of these people may have Apple computers. Is there a law preventing Android phone users from buying a Mac or iPad? Most of these people are dirty rich and can afford a overpriced Apple computer. Some people may not like iPhones (hard to believe I guess) and would rather have a Android phone.
When you see people using Android do you automatically assume they don't use Apple computers and services?

That's your third troll in this thread that I've seen. Are you astroturfing, or do you really waste this much time on a forum for products you don't use? Please tell me at least you're getting paid as the alternative is pretty pathetic.

I heard they (it may not be just one hacker involved here) used the top 500 most common passwords accepted by iCloud and simply dictionary attacked it via a loophole that let them efficiently attack it like that. However, the hole is supposedly already closed since earlier.

If true, while one may blame Apple for that, it wouldn't have happened if people just chose recommended passwords, i.e. not dictionary based. Worse things than leaked boobs can happen if you pick poor passwords and I think it's debatable whether you can blame others at that point.

I'm 100% sure that Android can get you in trouble if you choose weak passwords in various places.

I think key is how deep we are in the digital age today. It's not uncommon to "sext" a partner in a relationship and I can't blame any celebrities here for doing that. Technology has been so popularized today that basic knowledge about computer security is essential, however. This will probably happen again. Thinking of security is no longer just about locking a door when leaving a house. I think it will take time for this to enter public consciousness. We've become so used to security being about physical things -- locks, chains, window blinds, guns -- not immaterial, volatile information. Humans weren't really wired for this so it will take a conscious effort to change.

This hacking accident is actually hugely beneficial PR for Apple to greatly encourage longer passwords, 2 factor auth, and a lot more suspicion of any phishing-like messages from "friends/bank/etc.". Makes me wonder how much PR traction it would have had otherwise.

Guess Target said the same thing when they offered free credit monitoring services for a year. Didn't Target's CEO step down from that mess? There are no benefits when stuff like this happens.

But ITS NEVER EVER APPLES FAULT! It is ALWAYS the users fault in the eyes of Apple fans. If this was Googles cloud everyone would be slating their security, not its users, fact

This will be Apple's fault if it's actually proven to be but all of the evidence is pointing to too many different sources.

im disgusted by the double standards exhibited by these people.

These same people are against the NSA's allegd spying. and yet, when it comes down to it, they themselves violate people's privacy, for an defensibly selfish cause no-less.

At least NSA claims to make the world a better place, a claim that is not refutable.

Could you imagine the panic if Steve Job's situation was leaked when it first became known to him.
iCloud will never be taken seriously when it comes to something so confidential even after they pour tons of money into the fix. It's tarnished for life along with other cloud services!!! This is worst than the maps fiasco. If this new HealthCare service relies on iCloud it's DOA. No body wants their health info on the internet let alone their nude pics. Insurance companies could deny claims if they have proof of preexisting issues.

Customer - I want to get a life insurance policy
Insurance company - A recent iCloud leaked showed that you have high blood pressure and you smoke.
Customer - So what.
Insurance company - We can't insure you because you're high risk.

Annnd, more iCloud hating hopefuls. This hasn't even been proven to be the case yet. Get a grip

Because of blind followers like you that can't admit Apple could be at fault for anything. If they had no security against brute force password hacking (notice I said if) then yeah it is their fault.

I think I'm seeing a blind follower right now, the one who thinks he's white knighting by insulting others for what they like...there's a word for people who do this.

That girl from The Hunger Games isn't even good looking in real life. Saggy boobies and fat thighs. Ew.

Just shows yet again that Hollywood is all fake BS and should not be supported. That's the REAL issue here.

How lovely, judging her after explicit photos of her have been shared all over the internet, not sure if that makes you any worse than the original poster. Are you saying that Hollywood is just full of perfect looking men and women?

Understandable if this is the case as no one knows how it happened. But it should also be understood that no ones privacy should be attacked and invaded the way it was in this situation. I'm just mad this this guy is saying its their fault. They didn't leak it or choose to show the world what they had on their phones. They shouldn't be blamed for the photos leaking because some ******* hacked their phones and wanted to show the entire world what was on them.

The problem with that, is that if that was done at large, meaning many bots did it, this would be discovered quick even with this bug and they wouldn't find the photos of one particular actor just by accident. This was obviously targetted.

My feeling is that this was instead a Malware (social engineering attack) that then allowed a simple direct login into Icloud. These things are much quicker and more efficient than brute force attacks.

95% of large password leaks are done this way; I believe JP Morgan and an Iranian Nuclear station was hacked this way. Tried and true...

If you are under the impression that buying an Apple computer means you have to be dirty rich, why are you on this forum?

Getting a photo from an Android phone to iCloud would take a lot more work than you would assume these people are capable of - it doesn't just sync to a Mac then send up to iCloud.

I think you might want to dial it back and reel it in until there's actual evidence this was an iCloud leak...then again, I'm sure you don't care much about your reputation on this forum...

I find it amazing that there's a lot of talk about how this could have been avoided with various methods of authentication and so on, but - did you know? This could also be avoided by not taking pictures of your genitals! Clever stuff.

Took you long enough to post MacRumors. This has been reported by over 50% of the tech websites hours ago.
I guess unconfirmed Apple news from unconfirmed sources are more important to post before something that actually happened.

They weren't nude pictures of a 5.5" phone so it wasn't deemed interesting! :D

I don't think being a celebrity is worth being a target for all the horrible people out there. I'm glad I'm a nobody.

Thats you. I still wouldn't mind being Kate Upton. I saw all the pics (over 100) and she is right above Jennifer Lawrence in the power-rankings. Hot body and money. This could even help her career.
If this happens to me and you no one would care. I look like a piece of crap compared to the guy she's with. That guy will get some crazy high 5's tomorrow. I will get laughed at when I go back to work tomorrow.

It could also be possible that due to a bug in Find My iPhone it was possible to bruteforce passwords. The Verge commented on it. It has been fixed, but maybe this was exploited beforehand?

Last I checked, movies aren't "real". The real issue is that you are judging someone's looks then calling Hollywood fake...you can't even see that you are equally superficial.

People should start assuming that things they save in the cloud aren't guaranteed to be secure, and so shouldn't stick anything in there they wouldn't want the world to see and if they had to, encrypt it. Far too easy for people to be ignorant on tech issues, but they wouldn't keep all their money in their house because they know their house isn't completely secure.

Sure hope this makes people more aware about what they post and put on the cloud. And hackers are only getting better at the game. As long as there is money or fame to be made from hacking into something, people will continue to try.

What we need is stiffer penalties for the people who do this, plus people to learn not to put things they never want seen on the net or cloud. I feel for the celebs, but I also put blame at their feet for putting such photos on the cloud in the first place, if that is where the hackers obtained them.

To tell you the truth I wish I took pictures of me and my wife 20 years ago butt naked. I have only fond memories of my wife's beauty pageant winning body and how skinny I was. This was before digital cameras became popular so taking your film for development was not the 1st option. And I was never into those Polaroids.

Speak for yourself. I think she's pretty hot.

ehh, so you complaining that because she looks like a real woman she is a hollywood fake…. Also, I bet you have never seen her in real life. I guess if you thought she was bad looking, then Kate Upton must be horrible for you. BUt, based on how you wrote your response I bet you are only 10 y.o.

I don't get why people are defending Apple on this one. You sound like you work for Apple's PR. At this point it is absolutely obvious that it's Apple's fault. They left their platform wide open for attacks like that.

That the photos came from Icloud doesn't mean Icloud was hacked, it just means someone got the password.

It is Apple's fault if the leak came directly from this bug. Possible but not proven. There are actually easier way to get into a specific account than that do not involve Apple being at fault at all, especially if the person has a long complex password.

If Apple let this bug knowingly fester for weeks without fixing it; it would be Apple's fault even if they are NOT responsible for the leak (leaked in some other way) But, that too has not been demonstrated.

How they got the password? That's the question to be asked. Well, there are many different ways that can be done. Star's online accounts have been accessed many times in the past; its not new.

One of the issue is that people tend to use the same password everywhere, which is a big security hole in itself and makes it hard to pinpoint the source of any breach. Malware is also a security scourge that no amount of warning against seems to alleviate; much more secure places than those accounts have been penetrated that way.

lol, you went from beauty pageant wife to trolling macrumors? riiiiiight!
