You assume Google was open to Apple renewing. Where's the evidence?

Even if Google was 'open to negotiations' on paper, the terms may have been designed to be unacceptable to Apple.

Let's all move on and, as "superior" as Google's maps are, and they should be with 7 years development, they still suck even in major metro areas.

Well according to a vast majority of users and reviews, google maps is 100% better than Apples App.

The Internet is just abuzz with the anecdotal early missteps that are going to be ironed out. .

You mean severe errors. Your post reminds me of something LTD would post.

All mapping applications have errors - none of them are perfect. There's a gulf of difference when comparing Apple Maps.

Use that while you wait if you really need it. So far I have not needed it, but it is a good backup for when Apple or Navigon have an issue with a particular location.

Yeah, I have the shortcut for that but it's way slower than the app.

It will take more than hiring Google's leftovers to get the job done. Why even bother instead of adopting the far superior Google maps?

oh ye of little faith. just give it time. why let the competition have premium space on your biggest moneymaker? Maps will improve with age and we will all survive just fine, you won't get sent back in time to horse and buggy days.

I Like the New Maps Application

Am I the only one that hasn't had a problem with Maps so far? I'm guessing yes.

I live in the DFW area and frankly, the maps program is far more accurate that the previous application. It is also on the turn by turn better than my old TomTom. So it is a BIG THUMBS UP.

This change was a good one.:)

Outlook on Maps: Quick bump --> Gradual slope --> Big bump

I'm optimistic that not only will Maps get better over time but it will do so with a large bump in improvements within the upcoming next 2 months as Apple tackles the large influx of user submitted error reports and as businesses rush to add their locations to Yelp. Then we'll see a steady and gradual improvement leading up to iOS7 and finally another large -- probably very significant -- bump with the release of the next iOS.

It's impossible or at least extraordinarily impractical to map the entire world via the work of a company's employees exclusively -- even a company as large as Apple. This massive undertaking requires the input of millions of users so whether Apple released Maps in iOS6 as it did or waited another year until iOS7, the improvements would have been negligible because it's the users who will bring in the data that will improve Maps.

Apple of course needs a qualified team to make sense of this data and implement it and it so happens that those qualified by the very nature of the word "qualified" have already worked at other mapping companies like Google. I'm confident that Apple knows what it's doing. There just was no other way to do this than to just rip off the bandaid as fast as they could.

Ahhhh! So

Complaining a product that literally doesn't work = overblowing.

"Literally doesn't work"? So you type any address into Maps and nothing happens? Or you type in some location that nobody in the world has heard of and complain that all the streets aren't there because Google has them?

It's funny you are talking about overblowing, because that is exactly what you are doing here. Literally.

You call this minor? The only reason I'm not going to miss the Google Maps for now is because I never use Maps on the iPhone. But Apple Maps is seriously screwed up. Look at Faroe Islands on it.

Until Apple fixes this temporary problem, I will temporarily have no AAPL shares. I'm one of those anti-Apple sheep selling my Apple stock.

You're dumping your shares, yet you "don't even use maps on the iPhone"? Huh? Methinks you perhaps own zero shares. If you do own shares, you're not selling. You make no sense with this argument.

Also, I hadn't heard of Faroe Islands before you mentioned them. I looked it up and discovered an absolutely stunning place, with the population smaller than my medium sized town.

I'm sure there are more well-known places that Apple's Maps are less than Google's amazing data in many many areas, but if you are going to tell us a story about how you are going to initiate a possibly large financial transaction simply because of the poor performance of some software you'd never use, at least pick a place that is a little more...popular.

Once public outcry reaches fever pitch, Apple finally responds.

They fixed Atennagate by being honest with themselves, realizing they needed outside help. So they hired antenna engineers. As a result my 4S was vastly better than my Antennagate Special.

In a moment of deja vu, brought on by more bad press, once again Apple admits to themselves they're lacking. Now as they bring on outside help again, they'll be able to make the improvements that are needed.

Perhaps next time Apple decides to take on a project their not up to, they will think ahead and get it right the first time. For some reason what seems so logical & obvious, tends to escape Apple.

Thankfully we have a vocal press to speak for us.

Hmmm, I type in an address in this city, its a pretty small out of the way town, with no one living in it either. Its called Chicago, its only been around for over 100 years? Clearly not worthy of Apple attention.

It doesn't work for me, because more often than not, I type in an address and it will try to take mt to the wrong place, name the wrong place, or put the place in a totally incorrect location.

Its a sub par product that does not work.

Some people are saying " hey! It works for me !"

But due to the massive amount of public black lash, to the point that apple actually made a statement about it.

The point is, compared to Google maps, it doesn't work. Google maps is better, Apple ****ed this up big time. More than likely out of pettyness. Or google did what they should have done years ago and kicked apple to the curb.

Would be interesting to know what address it is, looking at Chicago here it seems to be well covered, including the 3d map and Yelp references, especially compared to some other places.

What city shows 3d? I can't find any

Chicago for example

iOS6 strike

Enough already. Apple reinvented the wheel and it is square. Now they will hire ex google employees? This sounds like it will end in a copy cat lawsuit.

Just let the google app exist as part of iOS. It has YEARS of polishing, it is done and ready to go. If Apple wants to develop a new and better app than they should do so, but it needs to be better.

I tried the Apple Maps in store and It is actually preventing me from upgrading to the iPhone 5, which sucks cause the hardware is awesome!!

I would have figured that a firm like Google would have their employees sign non-compete clauses?

Probably, but they are not going to implement Google maps, they have a solution but need more people with map experience. Looking for people that have worked or is working with maps at Google would fit that description, they are almost certainly looking elsewhere as well.

Thousands of workers and about 7 years!

Apple probably outsource more than Google though. I'm pretty sure that Google doesn't use data from TomTom and Yelp for example.

Apple will either fix their problems or they will get out of the Map business. Frankly, it's not like Google Maps is perfect.

Chicago for example

I thought you were supposed to see actual buildings? I just get this

If I hear another person complain about not having street view I'm gonna do a back flip!! Seriously, that feature isn't even available in 2/5ths of the world!! Just look at countrys like Germany! Germany is a pretty well know country I'd say but it's street map coverage is pretty much limited to Berlin and a few other cities. If you look at other major places still in the world like Russia, China, Turkey, Chile all have almost not cover. So basically only 20% of the entire world lost street map coverage of there area with this update. Wow, pretty much no big deal.

No big deal to me either.

I honestly never knew there was street View in the old iOS maps until I read about it somewhere.

It seems you had to drop a pin and then you got it.

I already had to use a 3rd-party turn-by-turn navigation solution because the old iOS maps didn't have that at all.

Meh... add me to the list of people who won't miss these features.

The Apple standard vector map is so much faster and smoother when scaling than the bit map tiles. I'm sure google will copy this technology soon because of it's obvious advantages.

Google maps needed some competition. They were just getting too big for their britches. There is no doubt that Maps will rapidly improve. Already love the passing of end points for transit to the Portland Oregon Transit App "PDX Bus".

sorry but nope. Android has had vector maps for a long time. Only reason iOS did not see it you can well put the blame 100% on apple.

is apple still going to push out updates to the promised countries that are meant to get Turn-by-Turn Navigation and Siri Directions in october?

from this http://www.apple.com/au/ios/feature-availability/#maps-turn-by-turn-navigation link.

i'm just asking seeing that the world is crapping on apple for poorly implemented maps, which it's nice that they made maps but just give them time. its not like you can stitch the pictures of the planet overnight and expect perfection. same as google maps, they didn't just build their maps overnight. it's taken them years to have what they have now.
