It depends on the country. In here (Portugal) there are plenty of ipads in stock everywhere. Even the ipad 1 is still for sale.

Relying in one manufacturer is asking for trouble anyway, like samsung.

not true, its been sold out in portugal for ages, only one store has them and the stock comes from the international branches (heard this particular stores representative say that althought they get stock the first 500 are already sold/prebought) since there was some sort of cutoff from apple to the portuguese reps due to some silly business.

the ipad 1 is in stock yes, but with the ipad 2 out the sale of ipad 1 has been down and the demand for ipad 2 is larger than ipad 1 , in any case everyone in portugal that wanted and ipad 1 bought it overseas before it hitting stores here.. hence the stock.

It reached very late, almost when the ipad 2 was launched. But even when it was launched if I wanted it was available in stock, unlike the ipod nano 6g which got sold out pretty quickly. The only thing I've imported has an iphone 2G even before it reached europe.

that would make sense, they already sell dif mem sizes so why not reg ipad and an ipad hd for more $

Why is it so unbelievable that another version of the iPad 2 could be released? It's true that iPads are selling very well but the competition is really heating up. There is a major new Android tablet every month and they are getting cheaper.

because there are a lot of people here who just bought the ipad 2.. and for them, having a refresh so soon will give them buyer's remorse

Android Tablets are like Androind Phones, 98% is crap and the other 2% are maybes :p

I love how just because the iPad is not a retina screen "it's lagging". For goodness sake, it's as good as or better 90% of the laptops on the market. It's not lagging that much unless you compare to the iPhone 4.

Completely agree, but Steve did create a monster when he released the Retina display. During the keynote, he himself said that once you use one, you just can't go back. It's true. The difference between looking at a Retina screen and an iPad screen today is striking. It isn't that it's bad... you're right, it's perfectly acceptable. But the monster Steve created wasn't about quality, it was about expectation. This is a device you hand-hold. The expectation is now that it'll have the screen. I know that's pretty much the only reason I'm holding out.

Do you think there would be a premium price for an HD version? (+ $100?)

Don't get me wrong... I'd love a retina display too. In fact, my daughter may get my iPad 2 so I can get a new HD version. :D I just don't think the current screen is bad or "lagging". It's in line with 90%+ of screens out there.

On another note... it's amazing how Apple continues to ramp up production. They must have some "secret sauce" in the works for the fall and next year. I'm hoping for an Apple TV update for the holidays. :D

For people who want to complement their MBP's and make the ipad their main reading device in the evenings it is important to get a display as sharp as possible.

Would love to get the MBP's weight of my lap ( fans go when not aired out enough) and hold a light screen with quick response.

Also easier to put down or take when the "Misses" wants you to "help" with something superurgent, like dishes:)

Exactly. And if you're on a tight budget like me, you held off because you knew eventually, a retina iPad would come soon enough.

I'm farting screens out every hour for iPad 4. :D

LOL

come on guys, do you REALLY think there is going to be another ipad released this year? these rumours should stop just like that old iphone mini one that has been going since iphone was first announced... so where is it??
There will be NO ipad 2.5, 2S, HD, 3 etc this year.

Whatever we end up seeing, I am going to wait. I am looking for USB ports for my thumb drive, I'm ok either way with having high def screens and maybe SD card slots (as long as I get the USB ports).

So is it "iPad 3" or the previous rumor "iPad 'HD' or 'Pro'" To many different rumors. No body knows anything. I doubt its this year...

I am taking all these rumors with a grain of salt (and sugar for good measure, lol). The only proof we will have of anything is when we see it in front of our faces. Until then, we can't be sure.

And for the "hello me... meet the real me..." that one of you has on your signature... are you a fellow Droogie? :D

It won't be the same price. The price for their model will remain the same. This is surely going to be a new level in the ipad hierarchy. Some will buy, for most people the existing one will be perfect. The higher level one is likely to have more connectivity, more memory and a higher screen res, for probably starting at 999 for the wi-fi version. No remorse for most people.

LOL

No iPad 3 this year. No iPad 2 HD - Apple would never want to marginalize the existing iPad 2 has somehow being inferior - not HD - especially when tons of iPad apps call themselves "HD" versions (i.e., Angry Birds, Angry Birds HD).

There's no financial sense in Apple rushing to spend the money to modify the iPad 2 production specs when they still sell every single one they make.

While it's only my opinion, like all the other speculation here, I don't foresee a new iPad until March.

And as for a micro-SD card slot, keep dreaming. Since no other Apple product contains a micro-SD card, there's no reason to put such a slot on the iPad. Standard SD cards found in cameras (and flash thumb drives with a DCIM folder) can be read with the Camera Connection Kit that Apple sells. And since there's no user-accessible file system on the iPad, Apple has no motivation to open up accessing documents on a thumb drives. You're meant to use iCloud (eventually) for that.

Perhaps the "iPad HD" is not an entire new line/model, just a nice BTO option.

The MacBook Pro 15" has an option for a high-resolution screen for +$100. It increases the LCD's native resolution from 1440-by-900 to 1680-by-1050. That's 1.36x more pixels on a nice non-touch enabled screen for $100.

So for the iPad 2, I would assume going to a 2x resolution multi-touch screen would cost more; perhaps +$200? This could be just a BTO option, and not an entire new model.

In terms of product line fragmentation… For "normal" iPad Apps you just pixel-double; for iPhone/iPod Apps you pixel-quadruple. And new Apps could be updated to take advantage of the 2048-by-1536. As Apple moves the iOS/OS X towards resolution independence, hopefully this would become almost trivial to implement.

Just postulating. Cheers! :p

I don't think most articles on this topic are suggesting a standard refresh, but rather a new version of the iPad. The current iPad 2 will not be discontinued.

This is exactly right. All those people who say something like, 'Apple will definitely not be releasing an updated iPad this year', are just playing a little psychological game with themselves to defend them from the sorrow of having an outdated product within the next few months. Would it suck to have bought an iPad 2 a week before the iPad 2+ came out? Of course ... but we've all been there (less frequently now, thanks to MacRumor's Buyer's Guide). The truth is, no one really knows what Apple will do by the end of this year. Anyone who claims to be definite about anything is just farting into a whirlwind.
