Have new iMac - don't install Firmware Update!

"My" genius concluded the iMac borked by the Firmware Update could not be repaired and since it was brand new arranged a swap, sending me home with a new one. He said at this time Apple did not have a repair.

That may be because mine had the EFI Firmware password set.

My recommendation, if your iMac is working, is to NOT install the firmware fix until Apple fixes the fix!

I installed the firmware update on my mid-2011 base 21.5 iMac and everything went smoothly.

Not sure why others had trouble with it.

Nor are THEY. Nor is Apple. But if you'll look at one of my earlier posts, the "black screen of death" is a frequent enough result of iMac Firmware Update to be merit mention in Apple's Knowledgebase.

Three of the twelve I needed to update went fine. The fourth croaked. Eight to go.

Anyone whi knows something about the next refresh of MacBook pro's?

Seems like the top-end 27" iMacs (including mine) don't require/support the FW upgrade. I wonder: Is it the i7 processor or the 6970M graphics that's the difference? Has anyone with the 6970M and an i5 processor had this upgrade be installable?

The "black screen of death" is a known issue. Quoting from :apple: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1557

As of last night, there was no firmware restoration download for the Thunderbolt iMacs.

The Firmware update worked find on three of four computers to which I applied it yesterday. The fourth is effectively deceased, much as Spencer described. It has appointment with Genius at Lourdes or Computer Graveyard, depending on how it goes.

Absolutely, let the Firmware update run. But the Black Screen of death with fans whirring is a borked Mac, not an unpdating Mac. Even so, give it some time. Miracles do occur! :D

Just heard from the shop, they are ordering a new logic board. Should be ready by next Tuesday.

same happens with my 3 weeks old imac 21.5,
black screen after update, and this is no any waiting problem to finish the update
imac did update and restarted, i hear skype's sound and volume up and down
and my imac too at apple authorized service now...

When you get the new mac everything should be installed on it already such as firmware.
