My Early 2013 Macbook Pro is rebootiing every 3 minutes or so, even when sat doing nothing, since installing this Sierra update. DONT DO IT!!!!!!!!! Apple are fecking idiots.
[doublepost=1516738442][/doublepost]It's literally sat with no programs running at all, everything shut down but the OS and it is rebooting after about 2 minutes.
[doublepost=1516738557][/doublepost]It's even rebooting when I try to go to recovery mode or whatever its called, well done Apple I have a huge paperweight now.
Was our machine repaired by Apple under the recall program? It sounds like the install tripped the hardware defect at the link below.

He's always quick to be a loudmouth. Read further in that thread you get a rare chance to see him kinda sorta almost justabout walk back some of his usual frothing at the mouth kneejerk reaction.
That’s because his later reply was about a technical aspect of the patch, which is not the actual reason of his anger (or at least the main reason).

Reason for his anger is that Intel’s approach seems to be “from now on all CPUs will be insecure: if you want them to be considered secure it’s your choice and you have to explicitly activate it yourself”.

Even the former Intel engineer he’s discussing with agrees Intel’s approach is wrong and suspicious.

Might want to hold off on the update if you have a 2016 M5 macbook... I’ve been stuck in a boot loop since updating. It’s on it’s third restart. Gonna have to try safe mode if it fails this time.

Booted after the third try. Everything seems to be working fine now.

I'm still having a nightmare just getting into Safe Mode, holding Shift during boot isn't working for me, so I've been trying to type the Sudo command to force safemode, but its rebooting before I get time to open Terminal and type it.
[doublepost=1516741565][/doublepost]Ah managed it now. Now time to start removing programs to see if that will help.

How about iOS 9 or iOS 10? Lots of devices stuck there.

Nope. Apple does not provide fixes for systems they consider EOL. Anything that cannot run the latest IOS is EOL and is never going to get fixes. In fact, anything NOT running the latest IOS has LOTS of security vulnerabilities that are NEVER going to get fixed.

Apple's EOL policy is not obvious or transparent. They really should issue a statement saying using anything other than current IOS/Mac OS will leave users permanently vulnerable. I just pulled a Mac-Mini because there were no more updates. :(

Does this affect Mavericks?

There is NEVER going to be a fix for Mavericks. See my previous post.

If you are running anything other than the latest IOS release, you're like someone running around without vaccinations. Not that Cisco is perfect bu their EOL policy is WAY more transparent.

Apparently the original fixes from Intel had a bug: I hope the version Apple has released is already fixed.

Considering that we're talking about OS kernel patches, and the macOS (Apple/IBM/BSD) kernel is very different from the one in Windows or Linux, I wouldn't expect them to have the same problems. It's not like you can quickly port this kind of code between different software architectures.

It's far more likely that Apple's engineers (probably getting some guidance from Intel) developed the patches themselves. There might be bugs, but if there are, they will be different from the bugs in the patches Intel developed.

Yeah I was thinking about this, what's the point of fixing these two when there are tons of other vulnerabilities they haven't patched? They literally publish them to the Apple website.

Well, they did issue these fixes to macOS versions that aren't current.

Well I think I've stopped the boot loop, finally managed to get into safemode (holding SHIFT was being ignored) and removed my anti virus software "ESET Cyber Security Pro" and so far touch wood its not looped again, it's been about 10 minutes now which is a good sign. I noticed as I first restarted after installing the update that ESET warned me that there was an update available for the AV software. This OS update may be the reason why ESET sent out the update announcement. I'll try reinstalling it tomorrow and see how it goes.

I'm pretty sure he was joking. You're aware how old that computer is, right?

The same way you check to see if you have received any other security updates? You're looking for "Security Update 2018-001".

I don't think Security Updates show as "recently installed" in the software update pane. Only applications show up for me (Safari and iTunes today).

Like others, my computer had a black screen for the longest time when installing the security update today and then went through three reboots and a non-working cursor so I couldn't enter my password to login. It eventually worked when I hooked up an external mouse. Not smooth at all...

How do I verify that the security update was installed? It's not showing on the update tab of the app store anymore, so am I good?

I thought we had the Meltdown fix for 11.6 and 12.6 on 6DEC2017?
No. These fixes were briefly but incorrectly noted in the previous security update notes, but Apple revised the notes to show that the fixes only applied to 10.13.2.
