That is funny. You are at the exact stage I am but my jail broken ATV2 is working just fine and I'm debating if I should move it to another TV or keep it in my room. I picked up a refurbished quad Mac mini last week and am trying different options. I loaded XBMC on the mini but I acrually have more channel options on the ATV2. My thought is to use the mini to record a library and then cut the cord.... or I could just start reading more books as I'm really not finding a lot of stuff I want to watch!

Some things I have discovered using the Mini as a HTPC:

First, get Airserver, so your Mini can airplay from your iDevices. Works just like the ATV. And an iOS app, Apptui, is an iOS remote controller. When you go to XBMC or Plex or Hulu website of Netflix website (and many more) the interface changes to a custom layout for that app/website. And acts as a mouse/keyboard for regular Mac usage. Have both Airserver and Apptui load on startup. Apptui isn't perfect yet. You'll also need a WakeOnLan app for your iOS device to wake the Mini from sleep.

But I also love using a Playstation controller (Bluetooth just works natively with Mac) to play games. New Tomb Raider is a blast. And grab a Nintendo emulator.
If you have an Airport router, plug a USB hard drive into it. All iOS devices and the Mini can stream files off of it.
