Every time I see an article like this is makes me shake my head. I think MR posted something about this earlier in the week about Tim Cook being unhappy about lack of "color" in the Apple Stores. When in reality, white males are the majority of people who are not only going to apply for the job, but, qualify for the job. It's just how it is. I'm sorry but most black men do no focus on technology like white males do. Just like how Sports Stores who sell athletic shoes are more likely to have Black men than White men(or women). Is just how things are. Why is the NHL like 90+% white? Because HOCKEY is predominately a white sport that attracts white youth. Basketball attracts inner city black children and because of that the NBA is 85% black.
It's just how things are. There is nothing wrong with that. What's wrong is thinking it is wrong and coming up with these diversity problems. I'm sorry, but I just find it absolutely dumb.
I work in the tech industry and I hire the tech people that work in the industry. What is clear to me (and more than just my opinion) is that for engineering jobs (hardware or software), the majority of applicants are male. However, the majority of those males have not been white.
The numbers have shifted over the years but the majority currently are either Indian or Pakistanis that seem to be coming in. I cannot speak to other areas such a finance or HR. In the engineering world, I have had several data architects and DBAs as women (only one of them white). In the SA and BA realm I do see more women applying. However, in the Operations, Hardware, and even Software Development area, it has been mostly male and currently mostly non-white.
In twenty plus years, I have hired a grand total of 2 black (2 additional were inherited when I came into a position), and a total of 2 Hispanics (myself excluded). The majority of what I have hired has been Indian and Pakistani. I would say that 30-40% has been white.
These have all been lower level jobs up through line managers. What is interesting is that since the majority is non-white at the lower level, why is it that bleach is applied the higher up the chain you go?
I think that by far the number one criteria are that the candidate must be qualified to do the job; second is team fit. Especially in down economic times you can get a room full of people that fit both criteria, so this is when diversity should and must come in. If I am building a team and I have the option to have my pick, I want diversity of experience and opinion. Experience and all studies show that this produces the best quality work.
Now someone please promote this Cuban boy to VP at Apple (oh wait I think Eddie has that slot, darn it!)
