Apple today added a few older iPhone and Apple Watch models to the vintage and obsolete products list on its website.

Apple has now classified the iPhone 6s Plus and iPhone XS Max as "vintage" worldwide. Apple considers a device to be "vintage" once five years have passed since the company stopped distributing it for sale. Apple and Apple Authorized Service Providers sometimes offer repairs for vintage devices, but only if parts remain available.

Note that if you have an iPhone 6s Plus with 32GB of storage, that particular configuration was already classified as "obsolete" prior to today.

Apple has yet to add the smaller iPhone XS and iPhone 6s models to the "vintage" list.

In addition, aluminum and stainless steel Apple Watch Series 2 models are now classified as "obsolete" worldwide, but the high-end Series 2 model with a ceramic case has yet to be added to the list. Apple considers a device to be "obsolete" once seven years have passed since the company stopped distributing it for sale. Once a device is obsolete, it is no longer eligible for repair at Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider, with the only exception being MacBook battery replacements for up to a 10-year period.

For a company pushing recycling and the rest of the green agenda, they create a lot of e-waste from functional iPhones and Macs with this vintage garbage.

A device doesn't explode when it's marked Vintage. It means Apple just doesn't stock the parts anymore - there's often some leeway but it's not guaranteed.

And in most cases someone with a device this age is looking to cheaper third party shops for repairs.

Isn't the XS Max still getting updates? How strange.

By far my favorite iPhone. Light enough and comfortable to hold with a great shade of gold

I got it delivered on launch day to the office JUST the day before heading to Hawaii as a gift to myself for my 30th bday. Seems like yesterday!

Yes, it got iOS 18 and will get all the updates for it and then two years of security updates.

I wonder why only 6s Plus and XS Max? What about 7 Plus and 8 Plus? Are they already on that list? I still use an 8 Plus and iOS 16 is still getting security updates.

From the article:

"Apple considers a device to be "vintage" once five years have passed since the company stopped distributing it for sale."

Edit: _Mitchan1999 do you disagree with Apple's definition of "vintage" or how is one meant to interpret the downvote?

iPhone XS Max - the first iPhone that crossed the 3000mAh mark, the best flagship iPhone with 2 cameras

iPhone XS Max had the biggest/highest battery capacity in an iPhone until iPhone 11 Pro Max then from iPhone 13 Pro Max onward, the Max models go past 4000mAh mark

I have a strong feeling that not only is the iPhone XR/XS not getting iOS 19 but iPhone 11 series also... Both have 4GB RAM and 8-core neural engine

The XS was one of the last big updates. I thought the 13 Pro Max line was next biggest jump. I haven’t been blown away by an update since then, although the 16 Pro Max comes closest with the insane battery.
