Usually the vintage designation depends more on the date of release not the date of discontinuation but I agree the latter does sometimes matter to a certain extent. So it makes sense it hasn’t been made vintage yet. It will most likely be declared vintage next year (2025).

According to the Apple website, "Products are considered vintage when Apple stopped distributing them for sale more than 5 and less than 7 years ago." I assume "distributing them for sale" refers to selling them new and Apple was still selling the XR new until September 2021. Five to seven years from that would be September 2026 to September 2028.

Yes, you're right, I was thinking more along the lines of macOS support.

For example, the 2017 MacBook Air was discontinued in July 2019, and was declared vintage 2024-09, 5 years later. However, the 2017 MacBook stopped getting new versions of macOS back in 2023-09 (aside from security updates), so only four years of new macOS support + 2 more years of security updates.

From the article:

"Apple considers a device to be "vintage" once five years have passed since the company stopped distributing it for sale."

Edit: _Mitchan1999 do you disagree with Apple's definition of "vintage" or how is one meant to interpret the downvote?
People are going to down vote or laugh at random stuff on here even when you’re 100% correct. Have thicker skin. I used to get ticked, and think how do you downvote this, but people will just be people. Doesn’t make sense at all, but having anonymity makes people do things they wouldn’t otherwise do. Would be interesting how much people would act this way if they had to verify their real name and use it for all posting online. I assume that’s where we are headed with the censorship method even employed by MR.

Your post was normal and fine. Agree.

I still have a XS Max.... its my 4th one. Its thin, rounded and has 3D touch which is great for gaming. I might upgrade to a 17 Slim when it come out, but I dislike all the new iphones so far.

Isn't the XS Max still getting updates? How strange.

By far my favorite iPhone. Light enough and comfortable to hold with a great shade of gold

I got it delivered on launch day to the office JUST the day before heading to Hawaii as a gift to myself for my 30th bday. Seems like yesterday!

Yes it is but the Air 2 as a good example went to vintage status 3-4 weeks before WWDC when it didn’t get iPadOS 16. This news regarding XS going to vintage make me think A12 iPhones won’t get iOS 19 ( but then XR/XS has the same amount of major updates as 6S/SE1 which has the most amount of major OS Updates at its time

The XS Max is the best iPhone ever. No other iPhone has even come close. iPhone 16 Pro is at the bottom.

I tried the xs at the time and sent it back cuz it was too big

Non sequitor:

Just recently got apple to put a new battery in my 12 mini and during the process they broke my screen so they gave me a new screen for free

Basically got a brand new phone for ~ $100

I am holding onto my XS Max like my life depends on it. It’s the last iPhone with 3D Touch and I just can’t do without. I’m keeping it until its last breath.
And I actually got the battery replaced at Apple Store a month ago. Good as new! Love this phone so much.
I believe it was the last iPhone with Apple‘s battery cases. I have that too. It’s great for long days at a festival etc
I ❤️’d my 8+ with 3D touch 🥰

So does this mean they won't replace my mom's perfectly working iphone XR's battery?

I could go to some 3rd party shop, but who knows what kind of battery they'd put in there

You can, certainly. The parts will probably not be readily available, and you may need to wait some time before the store gets it delivered after you order. My Xs took about a week for them to order and receive the battery. I'd say do it sooner rather than late, why supplies have not dried up yet, more than they are now.

SAME (expect that bit with the 16PM, easily the worst iPhone I’ve had)
I won’t go that far, it is the biggest update since probably the 13 series, but that’s not saying much. Still, it’s the best iPhone made to date.

I’m very excited to see what Apple has for 2025 and 2026.

This is premature for the XS Max. It runs the current version of iOS flawlessly and actually runs modern apps with little issue.

Sad to see that the final Apple product with 3D Touch is on the way out of full support. Still has plenty of HP, more than some currently supported Android devices. Apple could take the torch away from Google (7 years of device support) quite easily with this device, but oh well!

Apple today added a few older iPhone and Apple Watch models to the vintage and obsolete products list on its website.

iPhone-XS-Max-Black-Background.jpeg

Apple has now classified the iPhone 6s Plus and iPhone XS Max as "vintage" worldwide. Apple considers a device to be "vintage" once five years have passed since the company stopped distributing it for sale. Apple and Apple Authorized Service Providers sometimes offer repairs for vintage devices, but only if parts remain available.

Note that if you have an iPhone 6s Plus with 32GB of storage, that particular configuration was already classified as "obsolete" prior to today.

Apple has yet to add the smaller iPhone XS and iPhone 6s models to the "vintage" list.

In addition, aluminum and stainless steel Apple Watch Series 2 models are now classified as "obsolete" worldwide, but the high-end Series 2 model with a ceramic case has yet to be added to the list. Apple considers a device to be "obsolete" once seven years have passed since the company stopped distributing it for sale. Once a device is obsolete, it is no longer eligible for repair at Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider, with the only exception being MacBook battery replacements for up to a 10-year period.
