I signed up to comment on this very article: my fiancé and I subscribe to the 200GB plan, but these plans should really be as close to free as possible. If they want us to use the cloud, why not make cloud storage as easily accessible as their phones and make it stupid cheap?

I'd jump onboard a family share 2TB plan.

You and everyone seems to want something for free especially iCloud storage. But this type of storage is not cheap or easy to provide.

$3 bucks a month for 200 GB is a pretty good deal. Its quite easy to use that or any of the other plans in a way were Apple looses money on you every month.

While I have 3 iDevices and have a paltry 5GB to back them all up

It should be 5gb per device. Apple is punishing those of us with multiple devices instead of rewarding us.

I finally gave in on my mom's account and upgraded her to 50GB. She isn't a heavy user by any means, but 5gb just wasn't enough with 3 devices (my hand me down iPhone 5s, iPad Air, iPad mini 2) and when it became full then ALL of her devices would stop backing up.

You're right, but again, not being able to share with non-iCloud users does make the service a trifle redundant. I personally don't see the problem though; I think the storage prices are pretty reasonable.

Apple isn't about sharing. That's was it was so silly that some thought we'd see iMessage for Android. That would mean there's no reason for someone to switch from Android to use their awesome messaging service. One of the reasons people switch to iOS is the messaging and getting rid of that pushes people away from iOS as there is one less reason to use it.

The same would be true in allowing non-iCloud users to share. It gives them one less reason to bother switching to iOS. My fiancé loves being able to share with me via iCloud. Make it so she can do so with Android and now she has one less reason to bother sticking with iOS.

Darn, I was hoping they'd upgrade the free tier at the event.

Apple should really give you storage depending on your devices. Have a 64 GB iPhone? You have 64 GB of storage. Have a 256 GB MBP too? You have 330 GB.

I think if you have a 256GB and 64GB device, you should have 256GB storage (mainly due to the philosophy that information shouldn't be redundant, but that's just idealism).

It would be nice if Apple would include a one year subscription with a device purchase (not a measly 5GB)... so that if I'm always buying different apple devices each year I would always have a free subscription.

I would pay for this service if and only if Apple provided unlimited secure photo/video storage at no cost.

And that's exactly why. Those that want it will pay for it. Why give it away for free when they can collect a very small fee to help offset the cost?

Not gonna happen. Apple isn't in the services business. They don't index your photos and sell you ads based on them like Google does. There's no benefit to them offering you unlimited when they can charge a small fee to offset the cost.

They have dropped the NZ price for 1TB from NZ$19.99 to NZ$14.99. 2TB is NZ$29.99.

Office 365 home includes 1TB for 5 people (ie 5TB) for NZ$16 so I think i'll stick with that for my bulk cloud storage needs. NZ$1.49 for 50GB is enough for what I need to have on iCloud, which is mostly just device backups and photos taken with my iPhone.

Lol how do I come off as wanting something for free when both my fiancé and I are paying? Lol and storing data in the cloud isn't all that expensive at scale. And besides they would drive more sales to the phones if they could show it as a feature. Do you think Tesla owners are leeches for having free supercharger access? No. they bought a premium car and I bought a premium phone, iPads, and a few MacBooks and would like the perks.

I really don't know why they got rid of the 500GB tier. I wish I had purchased it so I would be grandfathered. I really hoped they would update the plans at the September event. I'm disappointed if this is all they can do. Those 4K videos on the 6s are really eating up my space. I'm nearly full at 200GB but don't need a whole freaking 1TB of space. Please, Apple, bring back the 500GB option at $4.99/mo!

Mentioned several times already but I'm going to repeat it anyway.

Free storage at 5GB is nearly useless. It's sad but the amount of times I've had to sell someone on spending $1/month to have storage for backups and photos is getting crazy.

We have family sharing for so many purchases but please expand it for iCloud storage! I currently have 1TB, 200GB and 50GB on 3 separate family members' accounts. I'd happily pay for 1TB or 2TB for everyone as a whole.

Perhaps the biggest reason for the jump in iCloud space is a new desktop syncing feature coming to macOS Sierra. In the new operating system, all files stored on the desktop or in the Documents folder of a Mac are automatically uploaded to iCloud to make them available across a wide range of devices.

Article Link: Apple Adds New 2TB iCloud Storage Tier for $19.99 Per Month

Hope that's just a rumour. Forcing users into a pathway they don't want is a really bad decision.

I understand the costs as the files are backed up across multiple servers but for iCloud to work as intended it should be so stupidly cheap users don't even have to think about using it.

Get rid of tiers and just make iCloud an "unlimited with fine print" service that costs under $10/month, with a year included for each new Apple device purchase. Or alternatively at least a three-month trial and a $4.99/month cost for the "unlimited but limited" service.

The free 5GB isn't even enough to backup my iPhone thus I have no iCloud backup of it defeating a lot of the purpose of iCloud.

So many people have the 'it should be free' (read: entitlement mentality).

Apple provided a product that you liked and purchased. And when you purchased said product, you agreed to be held (and for Apple as well) to the terms of the agreement in place at the time of purchase. Why do so many of you continue to push the thought process, that Apple should be held to do something that is not part of the agreement and would also cost Apple money; money that you aren't willing to pay? There is nothing logical about the entitlement mentality.

Removing a middling option and forcing you onto a storage tier you'll never fully utilise is good for services revenue and profit. All of the cloud storage providers do it. And Apple needs to shore up services revenue to protect against declining sales of maturing flagship products.

'Unlimited' is a bag of hurt, mainly because there's always someone that will try to take advantage of it.

It should either be a high amount to cover most *regular* users; or some how aligned to the largest capacity device that you've purchased from them.

I really get the feeling a 10GB or more likely a 15GB free tier is coming. Apple will bump it in conjunction with the base iPhone going to 32GB. Plus 15GB is where competitors like Samsung are at.
