Awesome !

2TB for only a measly $20.. Time to ditch Dropbox I think. :)

I'm gonna go nuts with this.... shame it takes 2 days on my connection to upload 4Gig.

If Apple keeps offering more storage like this we're gonna have a real problem.

As great as that would be, it's not economically viable as a lot of the space would be redundant. Barely a whisker of global users would be exploiting that space. The 50GB tier is only 60p a month.

Plus other companies don't really do that. It's a lot worse!

For instance, take Microsoft's offering: "Have a 64GB Surface? You get 29GB free. Free space on your hard-drive, that is! :p And 5GB OneDrive storage."

That's not cloud storage works. They don't allocate all of the storage upfront.

Why should it be free? I think a valid argument could be made that $19.99 per month is too expensive. But free?

I don't think it should be free, but thats just a comment that people here always bitch about. Just had to throw it out

Woah, not too bad. The 1TB iCloud is already a snippet cheaper than Dropbox. And certainly considerably quicker in regards to upload/download speeds.

Just a shame there isn't a way to share uploaded files with non-iCloud users. That's the big kicker for me.

Same. I have the 250GB plan, and I while I would love to use it as a file sharing service, I can't. I have a need to store about 500GB of video at a time, and share it once a year. Unfortunately this means I have to shell out $100/year for Dropbox in addition to my iCloud storage, which I need more than 50GB of, but can't possibly fill 250 unless I was using it to store this video. In an ideal world, I would be able to simply pay for 1TB of iCloud storage and use it for both my personal files and to share the 500GB of video. Instead, I have to split my payments and storage over 2 separate services. Annoying. Maybe they'll get there soon. Just a web based iCloud Drive that anyone can access w an Apple ID a la Pages, Numbers, and Keynote would be great.

Google does not mine our Google Drive data, especially not for marketing. Source here. Of course, I cannot say how defiant they can be once a government agency asks them to part with user data.

I'm going to say you don't know how to read ToS and neither does the author of that article. The Google Drive ToS - like every other cloud ToS out there - says you retain ownership of the information, but they give themselves the right to do things with that information. That article is classic deflection: the author quotes the ToS, tells you the things it says in black and white don't mean what they say, then they change the subject to the feds and finally blame the user in advance for any security breaches. He has a bright future ahead of him in either corporate or government PR.

The truth is Google scans every bit of data that comes into their possession, they run it through algorithms several dozen or even hundreds of layers deep, building a profile on you that is so detailed they know you better than you do. Soon I doubt they'll have any reason to sell it. Why would they, when they can just duplicate us in AI and have the software guess with 90 percent accuracy how we'll respond to something?

One of the things I find annoying is no option to pay by the year anymore. I really dislike monthly subscriptions.
I'd rather pay by the year also, but in a way I already do. I waited until I saw a sale on iTunes gift cards (I paid $240 for $300 worth of cards). I loaded the $300 into my iTunes account using the camera on my MBP. Now I get a monthly email from Apple saying my account has been charged 9.99 plus tax for the 1TB storage plan. The amount was paid by store credit. The gift cards go on sale at least once a year, so the next time I see the sale, I'll load up my account again. There's enough for a year, plus the occasional e-book purchase or movie rental, and I get a 20% discount.

It's funny how everyone is so afraid of google and data mining but every company that sells things does this. Read the Power of Habit. Target got so good at it that they could tell a woman was pregnant before she even knew. You're kidding yourself if you think Apple doesn't have a profile of its users. They might not take the same data that google does but they probably know a lot more about you than you think.

Apple today quietly added a new iCloud storage tier, offering customers 2TB of data storage space at a price of $19.99 per month in the United States. Apple now offers four iCloud storage tiers at prices that start at $0.99.

The new 2TB iCloud storage option comes just over a week ahead of the company's September 7 event, where new versions of the iPhone and Apple Watch are expected to debut alongside new operating system updates.

Rumors have suggested camera improvements could be one of the features coming to the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus, and that could be one of the reasons Apple is introducing more storage space. A dual-lens camera, as is rumored for the iPhone 7 Plus, could potentially produce images that are larger, resulting in customers who need more space to store their photos and other files.

We've also heard rumors that the high-end iPhone models could offer up to 256GB of storage (perhaps limited to the iPhone 7 Plus), which could be another factor leading to Apple's decision to increase available iCloud storage space.

Perhaps the biggest reason for the jump in iCloud space is a new desktop syncing feature coming to macOS Sierra. In the new operating system, all files stored on the desktop or in the Documents folder of a Mac are automatically uploaded to iCloud to make them available across a wide range of devices.

[doublepost=1472616156][/doublepost]I wouldn't use any amount given that all my data was corrupted on iCloud and Apple still haven't explained why or why my data was then deleted and lost..

Tim Cook does have an grand master plan as audacious as what Steve Jobs dreamed. It's the end of the old.

Everything is recycled by Apple and its Chinese supply chain after at most 5 years, whether it is an iPhone, a car, a Mac, or other. The pace of technological progress demands nothing less. Nothing will ever be old, out of date, and worse inefficient, ever again. Everything eventually becomes a subscription service that one pays to Apple.

Broadband just has to become ubiquitous and fast enough for all user data to live in the cloud. Thus this step.

It should be 5gb per device. Apple is punishing those of us with multiple devices instead of rewarding us.

I finally gave in on my mom's account and upgraded her to 50GB. She isn't a heavy user by any means, but 5gb just wasn't enough with 3 devices (my hand me down iPhone 5s, iPad Air, iPad mini 2) and when it became full then ALL of her devices would stop backing up.

Consider using iCloud Photo Library. In the majority of cases, by far the largest component of a backup is the camera roll. By using iCloud Photo Library, the pictures will be synced, and the space shared across all of your devices. 5gb may still not be enough, but it'll at least be used much more efficiently.

I think this needs to happen too. I've got 4 people using devices and I'd love to have them all accessing the one cloud account.

The subject of family data buckets is an interesting one. The problem is privacy/ownership. Imagine a scenario where the organizer of the family stops paying / downgrades / otherwise alters the data bucket. This could be a destructive action that would destroy a family member's data without their consent. I'm certain that this is something Apple does not want to deal with.

What's funny is that I feel old school. I still backup and transfer all my photos and videos to the photos app. That library is mapped to my external, which has plenty room and doesn't cost me monthly.

Plus, I back up all my files with time machine and crash plan. I just keep thinking that in the next few years I'll still be doing this method and will be stuck in my ways like the old people I see today.

" Because Apple has billions so they can afford it" is the common argument

Darn, I was hoping they'd upgrade the free tier at the event.

Apple should really give you storage depending on your devices. Have a 64 GB iPhone? You have 64 GB of storage. Have a 256 GB MBP too? You have 330 GB.[/QUOTE

So I'd get like 20tb for free. Cool

I don't see the point, could buy my own 2TB HDD for not much more than that and have full control over it.

iCloud and Dropbox don't share the same functionalities - Dropbox is more advanced

I would have hoped they'd use the same idea as they did before: offer the same capacity at half the price. I currently pay for 1tb and almost use the whole amount, will soon need 2tb. 20$ will make me consider other options such as adobe Lightroom (10$ unlimited dang-light quality) plus backblaze backup (5$ full unlimited)

While I have 3 iDevices and have a paltry 5GB to back them all up

Then pay a paltry amount of money (.99) to get 50GB.

Seriously people are so cheap here.

Might as well start this comment... But it should be free

So I would get 500GB because I bought a MBP 4 years ago? Makes no sense.

Seems a lot of people think Apple is a charity and they can just hand out terabytes to everyone at no cost. Comical.

From 9to5Mac:

"The previous largest tier, 1TB, was roughly 8x larger than the largest iPhone device storage tier — 128GB: (1024/128 = 8). With the possible addition of a new 256GB iPhone SKU, a 2TB iCloud storage plan would maintain the 8x ratio: (2048/256 = 8)."

256GB iPhone confirmed.
