Apple today added the NBC Sports Live Extra channel to the Apple TV, adding to its growing collection of available sports apps the device. The NBC Sports channel on the Apple TV delivers videos and clips of sporting events that air on NBC, much like the iPad app.

NBC Sports on the Apple TV offers video on demand that includes access to video clips, previews of upcoming events, and highlights from past events, plus it offers live NBC Sports events and full event replays. While video clips and other content will be available to all users, watching live content will require a cable subscription and authentication to log in.
In addition to the Stanley Cup Playoffs and Triple Crown, Live Extra streams all live sports content televised by NBC, NBCSN and Golf Channel, including: the Summer and Winter Olympics; Sunday Night Football and NBC's NFL pre-season and post-season coverage; NHL regular-season games; the PGA TOUR, including the FedExCup Playoffs, and the LPGA; the Premier League; studio content surrounding many of the aforementioned properties; original programming such as The Dan Patrick Show and Men In Blazers; and much more.
NBC Sports joins a slew of other sports-oriented apps on the Apple TV, including WatchESPN, MLB.tv, NBA, NHL GameCenter, Major League Soccer, WWE Network, 120 Sports, Tennis Channel Everywhere, and more.

Nice, But Not There Yet For Cord-Cutters

This NBC Sports 'channel' is progress, but like roughly half of the 'channels' on Apple T.V., it requires a cable subscription. It would be great to be able to watch Baseball games without having to subscribe to cable or the $100/year MLB.T.V. service.

I think this might actually be useful. Would've been nice at the start of the Stanley Cup playoffs, but at least I can watch nationally televised hockey games on my Apple TV. Still can't believe NHL Gamecenter can't do that...

Will they let me watch it?

So was this intelligently designed like HBONow, so everyone can get access, or was this design the same crap as every other, "Cable Operator ID please?"

No, I won't go buy cable to watch something I could get ala'carte. HBONow gets my money because cable isn't involved. When the rest of the channels on AppleTV open their eyes, I'll probably become a subscriber.

While video clips and other content will be available to all users, watching live content will require a cable subscription and authentication to log in.

Thanks, but as a loyal cable cutter, I will pass on this one.

So I have to buy a cable subscription to watch a channel on Apple TV that I can already watch on my existing cable? What's the point of this?

Apple, Please add functionality to be able to add your cable subscription information just ONE time. It's a pain having to enter this for each app that wants the authentication. It's a no brainier feature that's long overdue!!!!

IM Stoked!

Since I'm using a family members log in on my Apple TV, now I can fall back to this in the event my OTA antenna just can't seem to pick up NBC!

Ditto. I don't understand why many broadcasters insist on requiring cable/satellite subscription when same contents is available for free over the air.

Well, they are obviously trying to ensure cable and satellite companies continue to pay for contents. But this whole thing smells fishy IMO.

I know it won't appease the cable-cutters (once I move out I plan on joining that group, but for now, Thanks Mom!), but it's nice to watch some of this stuff in my room on my Apple TV rather than pay for another HD box from Comcast. I don't watch a whole lot of tv anyway, but I might want to look around at a few scores in bed, or watch some HBO GO.

For some people, it is actually a nice addition.

Awesome news! Now, if they can only add FoxSoccer2Go for Champion's League soccer...

And if they also add HGTV, a DirectTV-less NFL Sunday Ticket option, Amazon Prime Video, and iPad-equivalent apps from CBS, NBC, ABC and Fox (all without the requirement to log in with a cable subscription), there will finally be no more need to have cable. This is my personal cord-cutters dream package. Many of these are already on the iPad, so I don't know what the holdup is. I know that some of these are tied up with tight business agreements, Comcast, etc., but one can hope! I also hope that HBO Now is the start of the truly independent TV options.

Not all of the English Premier League games are shown on cable, but they are available on this app.

This is one of the few apps i'm really excited about.

I must agree, it is quite annoying to have to enter this for each individual channel!

There is a lot of content which you can't watch on TV.

For example, NBC might be covering more than one sporting event at a time. So maybe they are covering three different hockey games today, and which one you see is determined by which market you are in. On TV you can only watch that one game. On Live Extra, you can pick whichever one you want.

Also on Saturdays/Sundays, they have every Premier League game available to stream, while only one is shown on TV.

I agree - this is annoying, but I think for now a necessary evil. It does let you have to rent less boxes from your cable provider if you can get everything you want through the AppleTV.

If I get just one box from them (Time Warner, for example) instead of 3 (I have 3 TVs) and a second ATV (I have 1 already), I save $23.50 per month which will quickly pay off the $69 ATV.

----------

Your not getting sports without cable unless your getting it from your HD antenna (and there is no blackout); you think they're paying billions and you'll get the NFL, NCAA, NHL, MLB for nothing?

Not nothing, but a la carte via the Apple TV would be preferable.

I can't wait until they revamp the interface, so it's easier to hide/delete all of the sports-related items.

say you have kids or a wife or both and want to watch the game on another TV in peace and quiet and don't want to rent a second cable box for $10 a month

or your wife hates violence and you want to watch the hockey playoffs and stanley cup games
