Why the heck doesn't Apple buy TP-Link or Linksys or something and rebrand this as airport devices? I loved my Airport Extreme...so much easier to configure and reliable than the other routers at the time. They could totally charge "Apple Prices" for this too and most would willingly pay if the support and easy of use is there (maybe that is the issue! Routers are "tricky")?
Why not just buy a TP-Link mesh router then? If it's identical and just rebranded, I don't see the point... The X20 is actually a super simple and reliable mesh network... no need to add the Apple tax, which you're literally suggesting they do.

Setup is easy. There is a prompt to update the firmware. After updating, you are prompted to add to HomeKit. Just takes a tap. You stopped there? Didn't tap "Let's Do It"? Doesn't sound believable. Just saying.
Yep that's what I'm saying. 😄 I made the dumb decision of renaming my network and spent almost two hours updating Hue, Ring, Schlage, iPads, iPhones, AppleTV's, HomePods, MyQ, and whatever else I forgot.

From the AppleKey discussion I know I was pegged as a pessimist for not trusting Apple software, but it was going on 10:00pm and I was done. Wasn't about to take myself down some rat hole at that hour of the night. And since you asked, I have a hockey game tonight, tomorrow the wife and I have plans, Thursday both kids have hockey practice in the evening, Friday we're going out, Saturday is scuba lessons for my son, and Sunday we're back in to the hockey schedule for everyone.

Might be a while before I get to HomeKit. Especially since everything is working now. 😉

It’s like two taps. Tap “Let’s Do It”, then “Yes”, to grant permission. It either works, or it doesn’t. It’s probably not going to work, but, ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
If it doesn’t work the first time…then, don’t waste any more time. Rebooting doesn’t do anything.

Routers are so 2020. Or maybe I’m just a low tech user. One thing I hated about cable internet was having a static space the router had to be. I got rid of my xFi and 6 pods and went with a T-Mobile router that I can place in the middle of my two store home with direct access to a window. This “50 mbps“ router is giving me speeds near 150 and 30 upload when I was on a 1 gig plan from xfinity getting about 30 down and 6 up. And I’m paying less than half the price every month.
You have no idea how networks work, do you?

I'm still running multiple Airport Extremes (wifi 5, 802.11ac) that are sharing from Ethernet.... and I never drop off and as long as they are faster than my Internet connection, I won't be updating. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
I live in a small appartment, only two people and can wholeheartedly agree. I’m STILL currently rocking a decade old AirTime Capsule 2TB.
It just works, it still gets security updates, the storage is alive and running (since it’s server grade). The three or four times I had used restoring from backup or recovering a file it has saved my skin. Several phones, tablets, computers, AppleTV and others connected.

I don’t know what to replace it with without having to think too much about it, without having to install extra backup software, hardware management apps, handpicking the right SSD/HDD for longevity, etc.
Wonder if I’m missing anything from the latest and the greatest WiFi protocols.

Hence the reason I said low tech…but I do know this, my current set up works much better than my previous one at half the cost. Got anything that can change my mind? Or just trying to sound like a smart keyboard warrior troll?

Forgot about my Anova, Aria scale, picture frame, ThermoWorks Signals, the list just keeps going. 😂 Long story short, never rename your network SSID. What a PIA.

My routers finally updated themselves last night. Going to try setting this up a little later. Have to reboot the router but that isn’t going to happen during the day with my wife and I working from home. I’m a deadman if it breaks anything during “business hours”.

If it were me I would've ran a new cable drop in a more ideal location for WiFi beam pattern (high, in the middle, and away from masonry or metal surfaces), made sure I had the latest (DOCSIS 3.1) modem/router combo, and argued for a discounted rate from the cable provider. Then, if that didn't work, I would've checked out a competing service. Depending on the age of your home, the layout is not conducive to current tech needs and just needs a few tweaks.

I had the white xfinity router, 3.1 I’m not sure, but WiFi 6 router built in. And it only needed 1 tweak, a new modem that was much cheaper. Been extremely happy. Saving $700 a year for better service. I’m able to place the TMo router high/in the middle as stated before. Didn’t need to drill any new holes in my house, and didn’t need to argue with the cable company that probably wouldn’t have made a difference. Speaking with my wallet made a difference. Maybe not for me, but hopefully for the next subscriber.

The AX4200 routers *DO NOT SUPPORT HOMEKIT*!!! I have tried multiple times, even resetting the routers completely after the updates (supplied by Linksys) and it consistently tells me I "need to reboot the routers" and no, thats not it!

Linksys needs to get back to work on this one, and dont hype features that dont work!
Ok add me to the list of yep, you are right. Rebooted twice and no dice. That stinks.

The software and support. These companies are not as simple as the Apple solution is/was to set up or when there is a problem. It also is more likely to work more seamlessly with appropriate security/firewall/and now homekit settings if Apple did it. Look at all the tech saavy people on this forum struggling, let alone a typical person! I remember strange router/port blocking issues for various services back in the day before I got an airport extreme. I'm using a TPlink now because my airport extreme didn't have the range I needed when I bought a house but it definitely wasn't as seamless to setup as my old airport extreme, which still worked, just not enough range.

It’s just not a business they want to be in anymore. They did it at one point, just like printers, because, at the time, there just weren’t a lot of devices out there that matched the experience Apple wanted their customers to have. Once the market caught up and was able to produce better quality commodity devices, there was no need for them to keep producing theirs.
I get that, but looking at some of the forum posts here, I'm guessing there is still a decent enough market for it.

I don’t disagree. At some level, anything with an Apple logo on it is likely to sell to a large number of people (maybe that was the problem with the HomePod LOL).
