Apple Adds Phobio as New Mac Trade-In Partner

$90 for my 2009 iMac in perfect working order with no need to change other than Apple deciding to stop supporting it with OS updates (cannot update to Sierra) which means that the critical software I use (Numbers) across iMac, iPad and iPhone will no longer run on the mac due to software updates on the iPhone and iPad.

Apple are crooks getting richer by exploiting customers and forcing them into otherwise unnecessary upgrades by failing to support their older hardware. I understand that my iPhone 5c will also no longer be supported for future updates so thanks Apple, two perfectly functioning devices which you have decided should go on the scrap heap just so you can sell more products. Not all of us can afford '000's of dollars/pounds/baht for constant upgrades of perfectly good and serviceable equipment.

Review your policies Apple stop trying to be Samsung with hundreds of useless products updated very year and do what you're good at which is making good solid products that last for years AND DON'T NEED CONSTANT REPLACEMENT. It's your software that sucks and can't keep up with the speed you are trying to update the hardware.

I'm tired.

I read that headline as starting with "Apple Ad Phobia...".

Unfortunate name for that company?

Sadly, you're way off the mark with this one.

A 2009 27" iMac with 2.8GHz i7, 32GB of RAM and no damage is worth $200.
I can understand the low offer. But why do they even bother?
They can keep the cash while I keep my perfectly functioning machine...

I wonder why there is no article about MateBook X on macrumors. - Can't await to get one, i'm totally stoked what HUAWEI delivered as their first (!) notebook. Incredible.

My mid-2011 iMac is getting a little long in the tooth. If it wasn't for Adobe CS5 currently installed on that machine, I would have swapped it out already.

The amounts they offer are insanely low. I can't see going with them unless you just want to get rid of the old mac and be done with it as fast as possible.

My recycling "schedule":
1) Pass down whatever still works to family and friends for minute money.
(The minute is so it has a value. I find whatever is free is not being appreciated)
2) Donate to schools (They are rarely on the latest)

3) Once one understands that there is no money to be made by "trading in" things, the only decision remains whether to recycle it responsibly.

I am happy to just get rid if my e-waste and hope they do actually recycle components. So, for that price doesn't matter.

Depending on what model year one has, there may be a possibility to offer parts on eBay, but usually too much of a hassle for me:)

You're like some kind of Sherlock Holmes!
Clearly, elementary!!

Offering Visa and Paypal options definitely improve the program. However, it still might be better to sell an old Macbook to BuyBackWorld or Gazelle. I know these two companies still allow you to sell defective and broken Macs for cash whereas the Apple trade-in program only offers the recycling option without any cash value. How quickly does the Apple trade-in program provide payment?

Not bad... $540 from Phobio.... Macbook Pro i5, 2.7Gig (Early 2015), or $792 from BoomerangBuyBack here in Australia.

Both would be assumed in Excellent condition, also Phobio doesn't give u this option. Apple is getting there :D

$15 for a 2009 imac with all options marked 'yes'. I could get more on ebay just for the keyboard.
I received the same offer for my 2007 iMac. Gazelle's offer was $104. When I'm ready to sell, I know who I won't use. I do find it amazing that after 10 years I'm finally ready to upgrade my machine.

$200 for my 17" 2009 MacBook Pro in perfect condition, 4GB RAM, 1TB HD upgrade, optical drive replaced with a 512GB SSD (running OS X Yosemite 10.10.5)? Byte me! As long as this computer continues to run perfectly, I'll be keeping it cozy and warm. When I bought it back in 2009, I offset the cost by selling my semi-functional 6-year-old 17" 2003 PowerBook G4 on eBay for $750.

It's interesting to look back: Since my first Mac purchase back in 1988, every computer I've ever bought (always Apple) has cost roughly $3,000. I'm only on my 5th! ('98 SE, '91 si, '99 Wall Street, '03 17" PowerBook G4, '09 17" MacBook Pro) Prices for top of the line laptop models today are lower than ever, and the machines just keep getting more powerful. I cringe every time I read complaints from people about Apple price-gouging for their hardware. Keep your devices 'til death do you part! That's the investment you made; nobody's forcing you to upgrade just so you have the latest emoji set or Siri-capable OS.

Another reason to not use this company: They will not refurbish your computer, or resell the parts. They will grind it to shreds, recycle the metals, and dump the rest.

That's what Apple pays them to do - it reduces the number of used machines on the market.

Definitely sounds far fetched. Why are they offering hundreds in some cases? Surely 1/2 pound of recycled aluminum isn't worth that much...

Wells it's 2018 & it looks like it hasn't got any better. I have a MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012),
2.3 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3, Intel HD Graphics 4000 1536 MB, 256 GB. They wanted to give me $60 trade in for, at the time, $3000 laptop. Still runs great but has a battery issue. Have to keep it plugged in. I just wanted to get a new mac with the current bells & whistles. I do this every 5+ years or so. But what a joke. The power cord cost more than that & it's brand new.

Never take the Apple trade-in.

First, they're going to give you a terrible price.

Second, they're going to destroy that computer. A 2012 MBP is still very functional, yours just needs a battery replacement ($89.99 at iFixit, complete with tools). But they'll shred it, because old machine availability being low keeps people buying new ones.

Sell your old Mac on eBay or Craigslist or anywhere else you'd like - except Apple.

Tried to trade in my Ceramic Series 3 Watch Edition on a purchase of a Gold SS series 4 apple watch told me that they would recycle it for me sold on ebay in 4 days $690.00 i think i did quite well.

Wow.... a whole $290 for my 13" 2013 MacBook Air. I know these places need to make a profit, but these offers they are dishing out are ridiculous.
They are, but somebody will bite--hook, line and sinker. And that's what they're counting on. Dumb and dumber.

Victor is right. These guys are going to take a wrecking ball to your old computer to get it out of circulation and force the world to buy the latest and greatest. The fewer old Macs in the world the more likely you are to buy a new one.
