Because Apple never relases anything useful here in Canada when they release it in the US...

But just like with Apple Pay, I don't think they would get very far with our Cableco/Telco mafia that controls all the broadcast media.

Besides, I don't quite get this... If people already have this stuff on their subscription cable boxes, who cares if it's on their Apple TV?

parents pay for cable, i buy apple tv, sign into their account. settled. and yes, im a 26 year old fairly successful person that is trying to save some money.

Anyone know if DirecTV will work for DirecTV Now logins? They might access the same database.

No, I just tried with my DirectTV Now login and it doesn't work, as I assumed. Hopefully since directTV Now is so new, it will be upgraded shortly.

Here is the statement from Comcast on it:

Comcast has revealed no plans to support Apple TV’s new single sign-on feature and instead told FierceCable that it will continue to work with tech companies Adobe and Synacor, and industry group CTAM, to develop a universal authentication scheme.

“We have made great progress and expect to enable SSO next year,” a Comcast rep said. “We are focused on helping create an open standard that is platform agnostic and easily adoptable, and will continue to share our best practices with the industry through CTAM and the OATC (Open Authentication Technology Committee).”

Apple is continuing to add new providers to its Single Sign-on feature in tvOS 10.1 and iOS 10.2, and today introduced Single Sign-on support for four new providers: CenturyLink Prism, Hawaiian Telcom, MetroCast, and GTA (available in Guam). GVTC Communications, previously listed as a Single Sign-on option, has been removed.

With the new additions, when tvOS 10.1 and iOS 10.2 become available for the public, Single Sign-on will be available for eight cable subscription options: DirecTV, Dish, Hotwire, Sling TV, CenturyLink Prism, Hawaiian Telcom, MetroCast, and GTA. Apple will continue adding support for additional providers as it manages to secure the necessary deals.

Single Sign-on allows Apple TV and iOS users to enter their cable credentials once and then sign in to all available live cable content, even across multiple apps. Single Sign-on works automatically when you have a cable subscription through a participating provider, prompting you allow a compatible app to use your sign in credentials.

Many cable channels offer individual apps on the Apple TV and iOS devices, but still require cable authentication to access content. Without Single Sign-on, users need to enter their cable information for each app, a process that's a huge hassle.

Apps that take advantage of Single Sign-on and user cable subscriptions will be easier to find and track in tvOS 10.1 and iOS 10.2, with content located in the new "TV" app that's been introduced.

We expect to see tvOS 10.1 and iOS 10.2 introduced to the public next week alongside macOS Sierra 10.12.2 and watchOS 3.1.1.

Although DirecTV is listed as a provider that supports single sign on, despite entering the correct username and password for the main account, I receive the following error: "We are sorry, but you are not authorized to access this web site. Please verify you are authorized and re-enter your User ID and Password."

I have tried creating a sub-account and using that login, but receive the same error. I have learned that if I decline the prompt to use single sign on, I can still authenticate the app using the old ways, usually an activation code authorized on a website.

I really hope this bug gets worked out soon, because as the apps update with single sign on capability, they are logging me out and I am constantly having to reauthorize the apps! Very frustrating.

The DirecTV single sign on option doesn't work for me either. Using the correct login and password and yet it still tells me it's incorrect. I can login just fine on individual apps and on the website.
