Why does everything always have to be "SYNCED"?!?!?!?!
I don't need an exact copy of my entire photo library or photo stream or whatever the hell they want to call it now, on every singe Apple device that I own.

That is, in fact, exactly what I want. Photostream has always been a bad fit for me because I like to edit my photos -- if only to crop them a bit or adjust something -- and the way Apple has implemented the feature means that only the original, unedited versions get pushed out to the cloud. Having all of my edits automatically reflected on all of my devices is huge.

I don"t want EVERY single picture I take on my iPhone or iPad to be archived and sent to all of my devices, but I do want to be able to store (selected) photos in iCloud photo, that don't exist on my phone.
There should be more direct user control here.

At this point we don't really know what kind of control the desktop Photos application will give you. Hopefully there will be some options.

I would think the point of having photos stored in "the cloud" would be to not have to have them stored on your mobile device taking up.......storage-?
like how flickr works-? My flickr photos aren't actually stored on my phone.
That is how it will work, more or less. Smaller resolution versions of your photos will be on the phone until you decide to view them in full resolution. Having nothing at all on the phone and pulling everything down from the cloud every time is not ideal. I do that with Flickr and there's a noticeable delay (not to mention that you have to have a net connection to see anything).

from dropbox's website:

… from what i gather they don't "track you around the web". Stop being dramatic.

You must have missed this part:

if you visit one of our Dropbox for Business pages, you may later see an ad for Dropbox for Business when you visit a tech news site.

And that is just ONE example they give.

That doesn't mean they're tracking all of your movements around the web. It's the same thing that Amazon, Think Geek or eBay does with cookies. If I visit a product page on one of those sites and then visit another site with a compatible ad, I may see that very product pop up. I don't really mind that. It's a big jump to claim that they're scanning all of your photos (for what, products that you're using in them?) and tracking your every move on the web. I do value privacy to a degree, but I don't really see anything alarming here.

iCloud photos (all iCloud content actually) should be accessible on mobile devices via web browser, or why don't they just create an iCloud app-? that to access content?

Ever try visiting iCloud.com on your iPhone? uh huh... fail.

Say what
I'm sure 99% of people want their stuff synced, I mean that's the name of the game. Plus you can turn IPL off on the device you don't want the sync. Sure there could be some added functionality like to specific what exactly is uploaded but most consumers don't what a million features. Apple is all about the consumer and that's why the new photo app on OSX is targeted for the casual user. I mean do you also want a feature that only uploads certain contacts to iCloud, or only certain reminders etc? Also IPL doesn't use storage unless new pictures are taken or are used for editing/sharing (optimised setting).
What's wrong with iCloud.com on iPhone?
Meh.

This feature still does not work properly. I deleted my IPL and tried re-uploading my backup trough the beta website. However it messed up a lot of the dates and sorted some pictures by "date modified" and not "date taken". At first I was worried that my jpgs on my mac were messed up but they weren't.
I went back to airdropping the photos to my iOS device and doing the upload this way and all the pictures were uploaded with the correct dates so its still a bug with the website.

Anyone having a problem where deleted photos keep reappearing on their iOS devices? I delete old pics and selfies from both the camera roll and deleted folder, and after a few days or a reboot, the photos find their way back on my iPhone 6 Plus.

While I don't have your particular issue I have had the bug where photos reappeared in my camera roll after I turned IPL off. These pictures where not in IPL or even available to delete and only showed up once IPL was off.
There are also still some bugs with pictures not uploading in full size.
Beta.icloud.com upload feature also has some bugs where photos use the wrong date when uploaded.
It is definatly getting there and I'm already liking it a lot but there are some bugs still around. It's a beta after all.

I have no idea how you accessed that on your iPhone, as mine will not.
Typing in icloud.com on my iPhone automatically redirects and loads:

www.icloud.com/iphone_welcome/ and asks to setup iCloud on this device-?
I have not been able to access the main iCloud log in page on my iPhone.

Once you are on the website, click the website link (which will show your favourites) and than scroll up to get the new iOS 8 option "request desktop site".

iCloud for Photos is the best thing Apple did this year! And I include the iPhone 6, Watch etc on this list.

I can finally delete erroneous videos and duplicate photos!!! Thank you jesus.

Now lets do the same for Music and playlist syncing.

Yes, I'm modest in my request, but how many of us here are relieve now that we are able to organize our videos/photos from any machine?

I can't wait for the Photos app. One library to rule them all!

Amen bro!

with apple selling icloud drive service they obviously wants us to use this service and upload all photos, no thanks apple. I will still rely on my hard drive and time machine to store the photos. photo stream still works great for "cloud sync" photos.

Amen bro!

Meh. Photo stream sucks and will die very soon. It's not full resolution on iOS devices, it only saves the last 1000 pictures on iOS devices, it only stores them for 1 month and it does not sync edits.

IPL is so much better because it's full resolution uploads, it syncs edits and it is permanent. Plus you can have ALL your pictures on ALL your devices, even if you have a big photo library. It is also much easier to download (e.g. website) your pictures and save them on your Mac and than use time machine as an additional backup.
Not sure why you would prefer the current way of managing photos which is old, slow and simply clunky. Some people make no sense

I NEVER said I like Photo Stream -- it's disabled on all my devices. As a matter a fact I no interest in putting my overall photo collection anywhere on the cloud -- especially as a paid service for to increase anyones revenue stream, and ESPECIALLY if my photo management software gets killed so a less cloud-centric replacement can takes it's place.

Fair enough
BUT this is a IPL thread, specifically regarding icloud.com. For me it's free since I have way less than 5gb of pictures. If you have GBs of photos than yes you pay for the extra storage, like you do with other cloud storage services. Having everything in sync is amazing, even if it's a large collection.
You are apparently an advanced photo user, you don't like any cloud storage, you don't use photo stream and you don't plan on using IPL. WTF are you doing in here?

Dear sparky, I think I have a right to have an opinion. I think that Apple seems to have their priorities backwards placing cloud storage in front of getting the apps to do photos correctly.

Backwards?
Cloud storage is the name of the game, and apple is behind the competition in this regard. We should have had IPL and iCloud drive 1-2 years ago. Glad apple is finally focusing on this.
Whats wrong with the photos app? Care to state some examples. The iOS 8 photo app is pretty cool and the new editing features are nice, especially since they now sync across devices. Its obviously not a pro level photos app which it will never be.
You have your priorities backwards. Apple is just doing whats is long overdue because they also had their priorities backwards for a while.

Your right, the Cool Aid is great, drink up.

I do agree that Apple has been hopelessly behind on this, but I see no great progress here, and the track record does not make me want to put my eggs in this basket (and I have the .mac email address to back my gut feeling). Seems like yet another half-hearted attempt at playing with the cloud while keeping your feet firmly planted in revenue stream world.

I'm in higher ed and Google already offers us unlimited storage on GD. It would be much cheaper and probably forward compatible to put my photos there -- but even then not really really interested.

I do agree with you, Apple was and still is behind in the cloud world. That's is what I said tho in my previous post, where you said they should not focus on cloud because the photos app is behind. Still waiting for that explanation.
Than you mentioned you Mac email address, really? We all know "mobile me" SUCKED, even Steve took the piss and that's why it doesn't exist anymore. We are talking about iCloud which has been around for years now.

Enjoy Google and it's unlimited space. I was thinking about it for 1 min but after I finished drinking the Google Cool Aid I realised that I don't want the biggest advertising company in the world to have all my details and data. I than had some more Apple Cool Aid and boy does it taste good. My privacy thinks the same :D

I only gave Google as an example of why Apple latest incarnation is so far behind. And no. I don't drink the Google Cool Aid either. Between Apples pay as you go, revenue stream mentality and Google's we'll data mine the hell out of all of your stuff as you go, I choose NEITHER. And that is exactly what I plan to continue doing. No way would I ever use either to store my photographs. Dropbox is my chosen and free solution for the little cloud storage I need.

True, so true.

Wait... there's a Beta iCloud?? I think the regular iCloud is already beta enough ;-)

Still far too unreliable to trust my documents to iCloud Drive. No way I'm putting years of photos on there as well... And the day Photostream works reliable is the day hell freezes over I guess.
