Sadly, I noticed this yesterday afternoon. I ordered an M1 Air on 11/10. It arrived on 11.17. I selected to trade in my 2018 MBP for $750 instant credit. Being in graduate school, the Air was 899. That meant I could upgrade for 149 (12 a month for 12 months on the Apple Card). Seemed like an easy choice for me.
I kept waiting for the trade-in kit to come. The status page said it would be shipped shortly. Chatted with Apple twice and both times said it would come. Then this past Friday my card got charged for $750. I immediately called and said why am I being charged for not sending back a computer when I was never sent a trade-in kit. Said Id here back in 1 to 2 days. Never heard anything.
Contacted them again yesterday. Was told the trade-in got canceled in their system. I said on my status page it never said that, it just said pending and will ship soon and email me an update. Then the lady said well you can go to the new trade-in page and re-submit it for a gift card and then call us when you get the gift card and we will refund that to your credit card...
guess what, the MBP is now worth $700 instead of the $750 due to yesterday's readjustment. When I told her I would be out $50 she didn't know what to tell me. I thanked her for looking at all the options but said that nothing had been resolved and to please send me up the ladder. Said nobody could help me right now but a supervisor would call me back. Haven't heard anything since.
So frustrating.
I love Apple, but you would think a 2 Trillion dollar company, during a pandemic and the holidays could be Santa and not the Grinch or Scrooge.

I've got an M1 MacBook Air scheduled for delivery in early January. Took advantage of the trade in offer they made for my current MBP. I sure hope they don't "adjust" my trade in offer whilst I await the new device.

Yes. The sad part is I worked at an Apple Store part time for about a year. Was part of the original 56 workers at the Apple Store in Greenville, SC. Seeing what they would do for people and be super generous and overboard. I've seen them go out of their way to help people, replace parts out of warranty, one person got new computer for torubles... and now years later:
1. I took in a 2015 iMac for repair and it came back with a scratch on the front.
2. This summer I thought I found something that fit the criteria of the bug bounty. Spent hours with Apple on phone making videos submitting things and showing a certain thing. When all my work was done and calls were made (about a 2 week process), I got a thanks for your help but this doesn't meet the criteria--no reward for you. nothing. no cash, no product... not even a $5 app store credit, lol.
3. and now I'm charged for a computer I didn't trade in when they never even sent me the trade in.

Whoa, you mean old products become worth less as time marches on?

Who'd a thunk it... :p

The valuations by the third party wholesaler Apple uses are low to begin with. Folks are better off checking other known/proven options like MacMeAnOffer.com (MacOfAllTrades) or CashForYourMac.com -- likely see higher offers than what you'd get at Apple. Or sell privately via the myriad avenues and typically net even higher.

Just give me one monthly Apple payment and send me new stuff every so often. That’s where we’re headed. Let’s get there.
I would not be surprised. One monthly payment for the latest iPhone, iPad, Mac with free shipping - just like the iUP but for everything Apple! lol.

How picky are they on watches? I have several scratches on the surface that are viewable in reflections but not head on, and a few flecks of paint that have chipped off. I looked at their trade in estimator when the S6 came out and they said based on my (overly honest) damage report that it wasn’t worth anything, but that’s because I said I had scratches.

In some cases the increase is more than $25 for iPad Pro. My 2018 12.9 64GB/Wi-Fi had a $490 trade-in value a couple days ago; today it's the max of $525. Nice! Will that trade-in value still be that high when/if the new iPPs are announced in the March timeframe? ... well, I would guess not.

I've always found the trade-in prices hard to swallow. I would rather repurpose old Apple products or give them away to family than get a paltry $100 on them. I buy my stuff to last a long time though and just recently updated my 2009 iMac to a 2019.

They told me my mint mid 2017 Macbook Air was worth nothing for trade. But hey, they would be happy to recycle it for me.

Just checked and they're offering $280 on my 2015 Macbook 12" -- I'd suggest you try again. A 2017 Air should certainly get a offer over that amount. Assuming you're not telling them you have a swollen battery and it doesn't turn on or some other damage.

Also check CashForYourMac.com and MacMeAnOffer.com -- I've used both of these and had good experiences. Offers were well above Apple's offer, they quickly paid out exactly what they'd quoted.

I will check those out. Thanks.

Checked my 2019 iMac (i5, 512GB) which I paid nearly $3,200 Canadian — Apple Canada offering $1,410.

What a joke.
That's normal isn't it? My 2017 MBP 13' was $2600 when I bought it in 2018. When the next generation came out, I think they offered $1500 for it. I traded it in to Apple October 20 2020 to help pay for my 2020 MBP (below) for $700. According to Swappa, at the time, I could have sold for $1100 (probably less now). Cashforyourmac shows $790 now (after the M1 release tho).

My 2020 MBP 13' was $3k when I bought it in October this year. They're offering $1100 for it. (Just checked now - $1170). I imagine in 3 years this'll be worth $800-900 or so. Cashforyourmac is offering $1570 right now (after M1 release).

It's always been that way? That said, I know I could have gotten more elsewhere but it was pain free, instantly credited, and worked for me.

You realize the offer is from a third-party wholesaler, yes? So they'll likely pay Apple a %, then they'll have their own costs for checking/clearing/cleaning, then they need to sell them somewhere and offer some sort of warranty (more cost), pricing them competitively against both Apple's refurbished systems as well as the myriad private sellers who are selling their used imacs themselves.

Of course it's gonna be a low offer.

I don't know why folks find this a surprise.

Yep - as above, the Apple trade is likely going to be the lowest of the options. Convenience is expensive.

Agreed. Yes, 100% aware of that. Phobio or whatever. I haven't had any bad experiences with them but I know it's probably bottom dollar. lol.

Not overly, at least not in Germany. Apple's offer was higher than Flip4New, and they didn't even ask for scratches on the case. They just wanted to know if everything works, the display is okay (light scratches on the edge would be okay) and the bands could be changed without hassle. My Series 3 had some scuffs in the casing and even a little scratch right on the upper left corner of the display. I chose the appropriate answers in the process, sent it in and today received the full EUR 110 I was offered based on my answers. Mind you, I hadn't mentioned the scratches on the case as they didn't ask for it.
Few years ago I traded my iPad 4 in with Flip4New. It was basically flawless, but upon receiving they told me it had scratches on the display and offered EUR 50 less than before. These "scratches" were micro scratches at best, not even remotely perceptible with fingernails and only visible under very special lighting conditions. So, my take-away was, even if Apple's offering a bit less initially, you'll most likely end up getting more or the same and spare yourself a lot of hassle.

I'd instantly do this, if I needed a Mac Pro and an iMac Pro in addition to a MacBook Pro and two sets of headphones all at the same time. And the Pro audio and video software.

Please not give “ideas”!

Figured this would happen soon so I snuck my 2018 15” MBP in under the wire. Inspection complete and value approved last week. Should get my gift card today or tomorrow.

Should. Fingers crossed nothing changes due to some fine print I didn’t read.
