Don’t feel too safe at a police station in the USA. People have been murdered on the steps of a police station. I would at least scout it out first. I prefer an indoor dining area with a well prepared friend somewhere nearby just in case. Also parking lots are a bad choice.
I meant inside the police station, near their front desk, where officers are around.

I never thought about that. The Apple employees won’t give you a hard time?
They are pretty cool and actually helpful. I once bought a brand new 15 inch MBP from a guy who got the laptop as graduation gift. He needed money urgently, it was discounted over 1100 bucks. I met at Apple Store, the apple employee checked if the serial number was in stolen database.

$100 or so here, $100 or so there... that quickly adds up.

When did craigslist or Facebook Marketplace start charging listing fees? Meeting at a police station is a hassle?
If you are selling a phone once a year or every other year, the time it takes to deal with selling it cost more in opportunity cost. And yes it is more hassle, Apple mails you a box, you place the item in the box and mail it back, done.

Tim Cook showing off because Apple hit 3 Trillion market cap, has decided to make it rain.

My sister recently traded in her MacBook Pro to Apple with a "spicy pillow" aka a battery bloat that was so bad that the keyboard was lifting up and the computer would no longer close. They gave her full value.

Check on itsworthmore
Ok, it says $605. Does itsworthmore have a reputation for sending a much smaller amount than the quote? I am not exaggerating when I say my iMac is absolutely flawless. Will they say it was received with flaws and then chop the quote down?

My iMac specs are in my siggy. Apple is offering me only $185. I paid over $2000 brand new 5 years ago. That is a huge depreciation. The terrible part is that I can't use the huge 27-inch screen as a monitor for a new Mac studio or Mac mini. Also, it's an Intel so nobody wants to buy it from either.
That is a joke of an offer. But I'm also sure you can sell that on craigslist for way more. Of course, shipping would be expensive and there is the issue of damage. So if you aren't in a big enough city to get an in person sale, I could see how this would be harder to move. But there should be a ton of people who would be pay $400 for that iMac and probably a good deal more.

The time it takes to post an ad on craigslist or FB will take less time than boxing up iPhone and driving to UPS/FedEx to drop it off.

Hassle? You mean like sending in your iPhone expecting the amount shown on Apple's website and then having them tell you they had to revise it lower

or even say it's worth $0.00

then you deny their value, wait for them to return iPhone to you, and then do it all over again?

Apple trade in on iPhones are actually pretty good. Don't forget if you opt for cash, they also give you sales tax on top of trade-in value, so that's an extra 5-10% you are getting back depending on location. Not too bad.

I have never traded there, but I know couple of my friends who had good experience. If you think you are excellent, make sure you check very good or good. See how much they knock it down. Just so you know even if they knock you down a step or two what you will get.

When did Apple start giving cash for trade-ins? And tax on top of it? This is news to me.

Trade-in values will vary based on the condition, year, and configuration of your eligible trade-in device. Not all devices are eligible for credit. You must be at least 18 years old to be eligible to trade in for credit or for an Apple Gift Card. Trade-in value may be applied toward qualifying new device purchase, or added to an Apple Gift Card.

Trade values on iPhones not so bad but laptops and iPads are terrible. Comes down to time and someone’s comfort level for selling on own.

I was about to trade-in my 13" MacBook Air (2018) for the 15" MacBook Air. It was up-to $385 and now $310. Frankly, Apple should put more effort to assist Intel-Mac users to upgrade to Apple Silicon Mac, better trade-in value is a start. Yes, these Intel-Mac worth much less in 2023 and trade-in seems to be just a 'bonus offering'.

And I would add, if possible, use the in store trade in rather than mailing in a product. I wrote a long post here while back, but in short—phobio never sent me the cardboard box, I asked multiple times to get the box, they said keep waiting (already had the instant credit), and then got an  card alert saying I had been charged $750 by apple for not sending in an intel MBP… when I didn't even get the box to send it back to start with. it took a credit card dispute, hours MANY hours on the phone with apple, and it eventually got fixed. but it was honestly the worst and most headache causing problem I have ever had with a purchase, business etc.

next trade in I used the in store process.

I have used Facebook marketplace several times with no issues. I do local pick up/cash only at a public location and everyone has been great.

The only annoying part is the scammers that message you in the beginning.

Apple is the LAST place anyone should trade in anything.

Not really. A seamless, easy experience with no problems is worth it to me. I don't gain enough value dealing with haphazard other outfits to justify the rather minor extra trade in money offered.

It really doesn't have to be that much of an ordeal. I don't do eBay or any kind of shipping. But you can list something on Craigslist, OfferUp, or Facebook Marketplace for local pickup only. You meet at a coffee shop, bank, or Apple Store — all places where no one's going to get mugged. If it's a high-priced item (laptop, etc.), I've asked for a social media/Instagram link before just to vet that someone is a relatively normal human. No issues so far, knock on wood.

If Apple's offering a respectable amount, obviously there's no reason to go another route. But if you're trying to sell a semi-recent Mac, their trade-in values are... not ideal.

I think that not even having to knock on wood is a valuable thing, as is my time, so having to vet some rando by reviewing their social media and traveling to do a manual sale is not worth my energy.

I’ll be trading in my 14PM but I just don’t trust swappa..I know it’s stupid but I’ll go through apple or T Mobile
