What does Apple do with older devices traded in? For example if I trade in my iPhone X will they resell it as a used device?

The time it takes to post an ad on craigslist or FB will take less time than boxing up iPhone and driving to UPS/FedEx to drop it off.

Hassle? You mean like sending in your iPhone expecting the amount shown on Apple's website and then having them tell you they had to revise it lower

or even say it's worth $0.00

then you deny their value, wait for them to return iPhone to you, and then do it all over again?
I've never received less than what they quoted me, and now you can take items into stores and get paid before you leave. And for the record I have sold phones online before, so yes it is worth a little less you get in the deal with Apple.

When did Apple start giving cash for trade-ins? And tax on top of it? This is news to me.

Trade-in values will vary based on the condition, year, and configuration of your eligible trade-in device. Not all devices are eligible for credit. You must be at least 18 years old to be eligible to trade in for credit or for an Apple Gift Card. Trade-in value may be applied toward qualifying new device purchase, or added to an Apple Gift Card.
They do, they put money + tax back to your credit card if you don't want Apple gift card. In a way it kind of makes sense that it includes tax. Let's say you are getting another apple product, trade-in reduces amount you have to pay, and with that reduces the amount of tax. That's why I said apple trade-in is actually not terrible.

Apple is the LAST place anyone should trade in anything.

Apple gives very fair values for trading in.

Not the highest value, but the least stressful

I would have loved to trade in my Studio to Apple even though my last trade in was a nightmare. My iMac went back and forth 3 times as I kept getting a 0 value as they said it didn't work. Ended up taking it to an Apple Store where they were able to prove that it did work, but it sill required an escalation to a manager (who was very good) to get the promised price.

For my recent Studio trade in they were only going to give me $1500 so I took a chance and sold on ebay for $5100. Following panzer06s' advice I felt fairly secure that I could win any delivery dispute and sold it with Apple Care so that a claim that it didn't work wouldn't fly. Fees (~$700) were steep though.

Normal PayPal is very safe if you take all the precautions. I do not send to mail drops. (UPS stores, freight forwarders etc) I look up the address in google maps and zoom all the way in to see the home. If anything feels off I cancel the transaction. I take a picture of the item outside the box and video it being packed at FedEX or UPS and then turned over to fedex. All are sent with direct signature required. I have only experienced one attempt to scam me via eBay. The waited 40 days to submit the claim that the item never arrived. After receiving the video and FedEx status showing it was delivered the dispute was resolved in my favor.

Why, exactly? They have taken some pretty damaged devices from me, one being my last iPad Pro with no questions asked, also with giving me the highest trade in value available.

I’ve sold through Swappa (mostly) since 2013 and some eBay and I’ve found after the stress of shipping and will the customer love it or send it back (if it gets there) all the fees, it’s not worth it.

Carriers tend to have a better trade in deal on older devices by way of giving you the current gen for $0 over 24-30 months. It's likely what we will do with the 15, and trade our 11's in. EDIT: Speaking phones here, of course.

Just went on the site to see what the trade-in values are. Clicked on the "Find your trade-in value" button and it asks "First, who made it?", so I answered "Other" and it replied "Based on what you’ve told us, your computer is ready to recycle.".

Wasnt Apple using a 3rd party for their trade in program? i read online somewhere people were getting WAY less than what Apple 1st offered cause the 3rd party was screwing people over.

Maybe if you mail-in, but that's why you only do trade-in in store just to be safe.

That's not the same thing as getting cash which is what you said

Apple trade in on iPhones are actually pretty good. Don't forget if you opt for cash...

That's still store credit. They're just applying the credit after a sales transaction has been done. The result is the same if you get store credit first and then buy something after.

If you return the item you purchased, you're not going to get to keep that as cash. It'll be returned to you as store credit.

My iMac specs are in my siggy. Apple is offering me only $185. I paid over $2000 brand new 5 years ago. That is a huge depreciation. The terrible part is that I can't use the huge 27-inch screen as a monitor for a new Mac studio or Mac mini. Also, it's an Intel so nobody wants to buy it from either.
eBay should get you like $600 I’d think

Nope, that's not how it works. It goes to your credit card like a refund, not store credit. I never opt to get actual cash back, but goes on my credit card is the same as cash to me.

I was about to trade-in my 13" MacBook Air (2018) for the 15" MacBook Air. It was up-to $385 and now $310. Frankly, Apple should put more effort to assist Intel-Mac users to upgrade to Apple Silicon Mac, better trade-in value is a start. Yes, these Intel-Mac worth much less in 2023 and trade-in seems to be just a 'bonus offering'.
Oddly enough, my 2018 MacBook Pro's trade-in value is now $5 more than what it was back when I initiated the trade-in process a week ago. Unfortunately, the touchbar on my MBP started failing a day or two after starting the trade-in process so I'm guessing that the actual trade-in value for this thing will end up being $0.

Aren't they still using a 3rd party for mail-ins? Or, is it all handled by Apple, Inc.?

I meant inside the police station, near their front desk, where officers are around.
I know but check out the station first. Some police stations are so locked down that the lobby is just an area with a receptionist person sitting behind bullet proof glass. In that situation the only advantage of being in a police station is you might get first aid quicker after the bad guy is long gone. Not all police stations are like this though.

Folks value their time in different ways. I've had my time wasted a TON on Craigslist and Facebook marketplace on the most mundane stuff. People no show frequently.

I haven't used Apple's trade program, but if I wanted to just get rid of something, driving down to my local mall (five minutes) doesn't seem like the worst case scenario to me. Maybe I am going there for something else anyway.

We always end up taking advantage of carrier deals where they give you a free phone with trade in. Have done that with our last 2-3 devices now. Only real caveat to getting it free is sticking with the carrier for the number of months they waive your monthly installment (generally 2-2.5 years). Plan on trading our 11s for 25s this refresh. Of course, promos can always change.

I've had pretty good luck with Gadgetgone.com. An example is...they're offering $510 for iPhone 12 Pro Max 256gb in flawless condition. $490 for good condition.
