This is actually the most absurd option Apple offers on their webpage.

Apple are using a third party vendor for this, and that third party sets the prices doesn't it? Which makes some of the arguments in this thread kinda silly and pointless. Shows how little the general public understands how this stuff works, but are quite happy to judge and rage about it.
Some comments, yes.

I think some of the more important comments are to be aware of the 3rd party. There is a history of dishonesty that is well documented. Lower prices offered than their competition is not really the issue, it is that they many times don’t honor their quote even with products that are in excellent condition.

In my case, they offered $0 for an iPad that they quoted $470. Why? They said it would not turn on. I spoke to them, they refused to plug in. I had them send back to me and still use to this day.

Yes, Apple does use a third party vendor (Phobio) but it is still Apple's trade-in program and they can still have some control over the trade-in quotes. Apple can choose to provide extra trade-in credit as part of a promotion (as they've done in the past), they can adjust Phobio's "wholesale value" up or down, etc. Phobio is used by a few companies but not all quoted trade-in values are necessarily the same. Sometimes Apple is more generous with certain devices, sometimes others are.

In the end, Apple does what it thinks is right to get the best mix of sales and profits. No one is obligated to trade their device through Apple. If someone feels Apple isn't giving a fair offer, they should shop their device around elsewhere. This applies to any purchase experience where trade-ins are potentially involved.

But old Macs in particular are not worth much. My mother bought an M1 Pro Macbook Pro to replace her old iMac 2011, and she thought she might trade in the old machine, and they would only give 30 euros for it, despite it being fully functional and in good working order.

This is the thing, is a working old device worth having at all? Or is it just taking up space? If you were to buy the same machine in working order off Ebay you’d be paying 150-200 euros. I think Apple should do more to incentivise recycling these old machines.

It’s Apple Aggrievement. There are folks that need to maintain an aggrievement with Apple to survive. If, in a given day, Apple were to do ABSOLUTELY nothing, it’d be, “WHY HAVEN’T WE HEARD ANYTHING FROM APPLE IN A DAY? Steve wouldn’t have gone silent like this. I bet it’s due to penny pinching or greed, probably both. They should have never stopped making wireless access points.”

I don’t think so. It would appear that most in this thread have never used the service (or would never use the service because they’d get a much better deal elsewhere, guaranteed), so they would have little knowledge of or concern over the step AFTER using the service of not having the quote honored. But that’s not unheard of, people complaining about a thing they have no experience with.

Not taking sides, but since you brought it up. Some studies have indicated that the ability to create and understand sarcasm requires a higher level of intelligence. 🤷‍♂️

Well that was the second part of his quote, that I strategically left out 😂. Touché @Jankie

Laughing these prices, because you can get $100 more than they're giving on everything if you just sell used.

Probably get lots of Android trade ins since most want to ditch the platform and upgrade to IOS.

I went the other way. Happy with my decision. We still have one Apple device, but I find Android has become so much like IOS (but with more freedom), that it hardly matters to me. And my up/download speeds are 3x faster. People ooh and aaah about the processors in IPhones, but for my use scenario, I found the ability to upload/download large files at speeds 3x faster than my IPhone did to be far more useful. The CPU's in smartphones are fast enough now that new models are now about efficiency more than speed on most phones, as it is. What's the point of having a CPU that is amazing at editing video if your upload/download wifi speed and your USB connection are so much slower than everyone else? It's getting silly.

It's not reality's Apple job to recycle the computer for you if you don't accept their price. You are free to do whatever you want, but they are not obligated to buy a ten year old computer for some made up price that makes you feel good enough for them to take it from you...to destroy.

Just sell on Craigslist or whatever. You'll find Apple products are not really selling for as much as they used to used, mainly because no one has money. I can't sell anything unless I drop to "might as well keep it" prices. You think you'll get $1500 for your 2021 MacBook Pro? Hahah. Nope. Maybe $1,100 if you're lucky. People are so damn cheap.

I have no issues with my download speeds and neither do most people with the iPhone.

Agreed. A few other posters had laughed/liked my post, so, indeed, it was funny to some people. Have a good day 👍

Edit: Just to be clear, the “funny to some people” wasn’t directed at you. I’m just referring to Oscar Wilde homie.

Your $40 comment was just boring. Calling me an Oscar Wilde homie was actually funny 😂😂😂

Did anyone read the list? Some went up, some went down, most stayed the same. These all seem pretty reasonable, as trade-values will always be less than the original price.

Almost a non-story.
