Was looking at trade in prices yesterday in anticipation of this month’s M5 Max release. What was $800 last October (M1 Max) was $600 yesterday and $565 today. At this point I may just hold onto the M1 Max and skip the M5.

And it does seem the M5 Max release is happening this month, given the adjustment.

An insightful observation, and perhaps related to one I've made before:

Isn't it odd that most companies who accept trade-ins for smart phones or computers don't generally offer more for models with more drive space or more RAM? And yet, that same used device sold by the same retailer still has significant price increases for the higher specced products.

Profiteering at it's best. (Or worst?)

When I was getting ready to upgrade my M1 iMac (with 1 TB storage), they were offering like $250 or some such nonsense. I sold it on eBay for like 3x as much. It was very clean, under AppleCare and had all the original accessories which helped.

You do have to be careful selling on platforms like that, but it can really pay off vs. taking some of the absurd valuations they sometimes offer.

Weirdly, Apple seems to offer much better trade-in values on laptops, but with iMacs at least, they really lowball it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Yeah this is why I sell on eBay and Swappa instead of doing trade-ins. I can't stomach how bad they screw us over. eBay and Swappa have been extremely slow, but I was able to get a decent price for my 15 Pro Max and 16" M3 Max MBP. It just took months and months.

I ended up getting > $200 more via eBay for the phone, and 2x the price for the MBP via eBay.

Guaranteed to make you keep a product until it has zero value or ceases to work and never trade up until you really have to. I always thought that the trade in allowances was meant to encourage trade ins for a newer model, not dissuade you. Samsung provide very good trade ins on older products for their latest devices (at least for phones) which encourages you to trade up. Apple seems to work in the opposite direction. Odd.

~$1K for a Studio that cost > 10 times that value? No point in trading in with Apple when you can get 4 to 5 times that value elsewhere.

Why is the iPhone 16e **NOT** on the list? Why won’t they allow a trade in?
Apple only participates in highly profitable transactions. There’s nothing wrong with the 16e, it’s just not worth Apples time currently.

Notice the other posts here, Apple only offers a pittance for the most expensive items. They didn’t grow as profitable as they are by charging reasonable prices.

Too bad my iPhone 4S in mint condition isn’t listed. I guess i’ll keep it then to sell it on Ebay in 5-10 years. 🙂

Good to know about the new trade in amounts. Always convenient to do trade in directly with Apple otherwise it is always possible to get better value for old device somewhere else.

Why do you say "adjusts" when you mean "reduces"?

Why do you say "adjusts" when you mean "reduces"?
A well formatted table to spread incorrect information about Mac trade-in values and measly 4 lines for the ERRATA CORRIGE at the very bottom of the article, the portion of it staying hidden in the homepage. Not fair imho.
