Probably because I wrote an email to Mr. Cook yesterday

But seriously, I did and I am guessing many others did as well, hopefully they will hear the voices of the professionals once again!

I haven't seen a retreat like this since the Germans in the Battle of Stalingrad.

Perhaps they should just be honest and stick a "Lol" or "Old" tag over the Mac Pro?

Complete with removing the "Buy Now" suggestion.

If the MacRumors Buyer's Guide has any respect at all, they would continue to list "DO NOT BUY" next to the Mac Pros. A good buyer's guide does not suggest, "Buy this because it was recently updated". A good buyer's guide says, "Buy this, because it's actually new and contains value", neither of which apply to these "New" Mac Pros. Paying around $3000 for 2-year-old hardware is against the purpose and spirit of a Buyer's Guide.

Looks like they finally gave in despite the excuses and justifications, buyers guide is back to "don't buy" for the MP. Now they just need to switch the counter back as well.

Note the Buyers Guide has been changed back to "don't buy." Though the 600-day count remains reset.

EDIT: Milo beat me to it.

Maybe late 2013 is a smoke screen.

I'm sure desktop sales have slowed with lack of updates.
From the sounds of it they used processors compatible with the existing motherboards.

Maybe they did a speed bump to try to push sales of existing inventory to draw down levels ahead of a real product release later this year

Intentional?

I'm beginning to wonder if the neglect in the Pro line is intended to push people like me out of that platform. I'm not going to drop top dollar on three year old technology and I'm certainly not going to wait another year for an update. As it stands you can pick up a Mac Mini Server, load it with RAM (16GB for $105 at BestBuy) and have something akin in performance to an entry-level Mac Pro at a cost of $1200 AND get a thunderbolt interface in the process. If I really NEED the 12-core 64GB solution, I'm going to dump Mac and go PC on a current model and probably pay well less than the Apple premium.

Let's face it, this market just isn't important to Apple. They have the engineers. They have the money to sink in to development. They just don't care. If they drive people away from the platform, they can justify their own previous decision to kill it.

Apple is missing the bigger picture here. No matter how much the workstation market shrinks, we still need development platforms. We can talk all day about how we need to focus on developing FOR the mobile devices, but we still need real machines to develop an create content ON.

Whoa...

Such a little word, such a big meaning: "NEW"

Apparently Apple agrees: it's not "NEW" enough.

Good.

At least it proves teh are paying attention to what people are saying....

Say what you will, but the truth is that Apple has ALWAYS paid attention to what its customers say - this is just a minor proof of it.

Nevertheless, it seems clear that Apple is on either of two tracks here:

- A stopgap update just to keep the lineup going until their major redesign is ready by early-2013. And by "major redesign" I mean the coming of the fabled xMac headless mini-tower with some three PCIe 3 slots, TB ports, USB 3 ports and a couple of drive bays. The main reasons for this? SJ's ideological hatred for mini-tower/expandable Macs is gone, as well as environmental factors that may push Apple to reduce volume, packaging and materials in the new xMac;

- Or something similar to what John Sculley said back in October 1990 about the Apple II line (and I DO have the original A+/InCider magazine with that infamous "open letter"): That "we value the Apple II family as an asset, which will continue to nourish", although "beyond that, I am not at liberty to disclose specific product plans." Needless to say, the Apple II line was killed shortly after that "open letter" and several "personal" Mac models (such as the LC) were launched (along with an Apple //e compatibility card). Longtime Apple fans like me may replace "Apple II family" with "Mac Pro" and get the gist... ;)

So, is it the former or the latter? Probably the former, but in a way that will be TOTALLY different from the current Mac Pro line. Welcome to xMac.

Makes me glad that I got my 2011 iMac shortly after it was released last year.

Well remember, the iMac is not classified by Apple as a 'Pro' machine...

This next year thing is in regards mainly to the Mac Pro.

Everybody's running around quoting David Pogue in a circle jerk like he's the Apple CEO. We know how locked down Apple is. There's really two options. His report is a controlled leak from Tim Cook/Apple, or he doesn't really know *****. Do you think Apple's top execs would actually breach security? Apples internal security is insane.

I find his report dubious. Not only that, but totally vague. 'Something great' for desktops. Not an update to the Mac Pro. This is an easy statement to make. I've got another one:

Apples got 'something great' coming for phones sometime this year!

I'd love to see an officially apology/retraction from Apple, but I know that's like asking to meet the Easter Bunny.

That's my point - that's just another rumor, we got absolutely nothing from apple about the future of this product.

Well we did. Two different sources inside Apple, one of them being Tim Cook.

If Cook's email is legit, it doesn't necessarily mean an upgrade for Mac Pro but it means something for the professionals. It can be one of many different things. We'll just wait and see.

This Mac Pro update was indeed a shame, but we now know that Apple is not discontinuing the machine and something more interesting is on the horizon.

You've got to admit that it is a good news - especially for all those folks who already considered switching to another platform. And it's a news coming from Apple's CEO, not another rumor from chinese forums.

I say, give Tim a chance.

...

If Cook's email is legit...

That's the whole point, that was an email allegedly sent to a user. We have no idea if it's really legit or a fake. Personally I don't buy it.

...we now know that Apple is not discontinuing the machine...

No we don't. If Tim Cook or anyone else from Apple wants to make a public statement about the future of the machine, they should make a public statement about the future of the machine. Supposed "leaks" aren't something to be taken seriously and especially not used for buying decisions.

Until there's confirmation that that is indeed an email from Tim I'm highly skeptical. It's another example of rumors coming to life on forums.

As for Pogue, I've heard some people who've followed him for some time comment on a declining level of critical reporting from him as of late, though admittedly I don't follow his work.

Until someone can give me a solid answer as to why they think this email came from Cook, or why we should trust anything from Pogue, I'm operating under the assumption it's all hot air.

No Thunderbolt or USB 3.0?

"The company also decided not to add Thunderbolt or USB 3.0 to what is supposed to be its top-of-the-line professional workstation…"

This is sad, since Apple has included those two features in the MBP and other. Why not put it in this which is supposed to be the most powerful machine around?

I really needed a machine to get started on a video editing project, and had been holding out months for this update. I was royally pissed and ready to switch to Windows last night, but I priced out the Dell and HP towers, and looking at a price comparison on dual 6-cores, Apple came out quite a bit lower priced at the 2.4, 12-core option with SSD boot and 6TBs of internal storage (which means I won't really need to use the TB peripherals for active workflow), so I bit the bullet and bought the beast. I suppose the processors are dated and I have to forego Thunderbolt, USB3 and blu-ray writing, but in the end the $6000 stopgap 12-core Apple dinosaur option was still more appealing than forking over $10000 and moving my whole life to Windows, despite the allure of 16 cores and all that. I am hoping the big metal dinosaur will behave.

I absolutely would NOT have made this purchase if Apple hadn't sent signals/assurances after the update that it is going to maintain/update this line in the future.

I hate to say it, but in the end I couldn't make the switch. Will I regret it? Hopefully not.

Apple is the most profitable company in the world. This is the result of a lack of interest, not a lack of resources.

Sad day...

Screw the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing we can’t do anymore is make tools for them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. While some may see them as the crazy ones, we choose to not see them at all. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are now on their own, because we just want to make money making iToys.

Rather than reposting what I just posted in the feedback thread on the topic of our Buyer's Guide recommendation, I'll just link to it here to explain why we did (and still do) count this as an update.

Sorry, l just can't accept that excuse as a reason to reset the buyers guide clock.
Apple did a boo-boo, plain and simple.
If l were a pro customer who had been waiting to purchase a Mac Pro for a while, then this incremental update is a joke.

first sign of tim cook giving the middle finger to his customers. this would not have happened under steve jobs.

Oh FFS I think it's time we dropped the "This would not have happened under Jobs" statements.

1. Jobs was quite prepared to leave customers in the cold.

2. Jobs isn't going to come back

3. Cook has been effectively running Apple since 2010.

4. One thing Jobs wanted was for employees to not do "what Steve would have wanted" but to do what was best for the company at the time.

The Buyer's Guide is now a Buyer's Guide again. Good fix, MacRumors.

I don't mind the counter so much. I will forever place an asterisk next to that date in my mind.

Just once in a blue moon there is something written on the internet that *actually* has me laughing out loud, this was literally laugh out loud funny!

Lovely sarcasm and satire, deadly sharp lines such as «While some may see them as the crazy ones, we choose to not see them at all» and «You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing we can’t do anymore is make tools for them»

Good stuff!

I remember that ad, good times, and a good update to that ad :D:cool:
