Well the heatwaves in Europe damaged by workstation monitor 2 weeks ago.

So I went to the Apple Store and shopping mall to check the Studio Display.

In the third party store I had more space and time to do a full test.

It’s an awesome monitor. The display and sound are exceptional. There is simply no display less than 1500 euros that has this design, sound and 5k display quality.

But I did make the sound and USB hub fail when I connected 3 USB devices.

I repeated the test and same result.

So the problem people are seeing is related to the USB hub.

If you don’t attach any USB devices the display and sound work perfealty.

I will definitely buy the Studio Display after the firmware fix comes out.

So many people were defending this $1500+ purchase. But from the webcam issues to now speaker issues, this is hardy a $1500 experience. Cheaper studio monitors, like those from KRK or Yamaha, for example don’t bug out like this.

To continue to defend this monitor is to defend the indefensible.
Those monitors are 5k?

I wonder if anyone has considered this might be a problem with Monterey rather than with the Studio Display? My Mac Studio will sometimes drop connection to my USB-C-connected audio interface (Moto M4) for no apparent reason, then reconnect after 10 seconds or so. Sometimes I have to physically disconnect/reconnect it for it to be re-discovered. My use of the Motu M4 predates the purchase my Mac Studio, it worked 100% fine with my ancient 2011 Intel iMac without ever dropping connection, and with my even older 2010 Mac mini, both running High Sierra, so the problem is not at the M4's end. I keep hoping some patch to Monterey will fix it, but it never does.
Does your usb dropout happen after resume/wake from sleep? Monterey has been suffering from usb dropouts on my m1 max MacBook during wake from sleep.

My MacBook is docked and connected to monitors and a whole host of usb devices…via a TS4 and a kvm switch and a powered usb2.0 hub. my magic keyboard and trackpad are connected to the powered usb2.0 hub along with a camera and a motu m2 and another sound blaster sound card. Only the magic keyboard and/or trackpad sometimes drop out after wake from sleep, and I have to turn them off and on again to resume functionality. Usually it’s just the trackpad that drops out.

I think the problem is related to the fact on Monterey, the m1 max MacBook darkwakes from sleep every 65 minutes for about 45 seconds… then it goes back to sleep. Ad-infinitum. I can check the logs to see how many iterations of the darkwake/go back to sleep cycle there were. And after approx 8-12 hours or so of sleep time, some usb devices drop out.

This was Never a problem on intel. In fact on my Intel machine once I put it to sleep it never darkwakes it stays asleep until I wake it again. And usb devices did not drop out.

Been using mine since launch day, everyday (I work from home) and have had zero problems with the mic, camera or speaker despite heavy videoconferencing use. Works flawlessly between my two Macs. Not saying there is not the occasional issue (clearly folks are seeing some) but by and large this is another overblown issue, lets call it speakergate.

Name a 5K monitor that costs $500
I was actually referrring to the panel itself, the one that LG made in 2017 that this uses. We know the panel isn't that expensive as you can pick up the same panel in the Liyama ProLite for $900 - granted its ugly as hell.

Apples price for screens using this panel dropped every year, the final version was just over $1k before it was discontinued, then re-introduced with the Studio Display. Slapping a camera on it and improving sound doesn't come close to justifying the price increase when theres the likes of the Samsung (oh no I said Samsung, quick downvote) M8 and LG Ultrafine (same panel) out there.

For its price point its a crappy product.

Not in my case because i have disabled all sleep options other than turning the display off after 10 minutes. So my Mac Studio never sleeps as such. I power it down at night when I've finished with it and boot it when I want to use it.

I have 500 dollar 27 inch 2k resolution Dell monitor

so much trouble just to use a monitor lol

This isn’t the same panel, it’s improved. Side-by-side comparisons have shown the Studio Display to have significantly better contrast.

And that doesn’t have a unibody, camera, microphone or speakers.

Next up: iToaster - It runs a full iOS installation and requires you to unplug it for 10 seconds before it can make toast.
This is what happens when people try to be way to smart and over engineer something that does not to be over engineered. It is a monitor therefore let it be just that, why complicate matters by making it to be more than what it is.

Guy…it was $2500 for the 23” Cinema Display in 2003 and we never said such things.

Overall the Studio Display is quite fantastic value and quality compared to anything previous and current.

They just needed to test the iOS firmware more thoroughly before shipping.

Good thing these things can be upgraded.

I have Logitech FHD camera with a mic, costs probably 50 dollars, delivers much better and crisp video.
Speakers G2000 Edifier have much better audio than anything built in displays, cost about 60 dollars.
So excellent video and audio for about 110 dollars in total, far exceeding anything in built in displays.
Also, don't malfunction lol.

One of the pros of this monitor is that it is a "clean" all in one solution for people looking for that.

Yes, there are better options if you have a designated device for each thing.

Yes it had some issues with interference over the cable.

It was $2500, made of plastic, 1200p, no sound, no camera. No firmware update capability.

And we loved it anyway.

People have it so good these days and they whine soooo much.

Well, there is no cords in front of the Dell monitor. All stuck behind. I have also input for a Macbook Type-C.

Personally, I think the only reason Apple decided to build this around an A-Series chip running iOS is so they can render it obsolete in the not so distant future. This obviously then forces you to upgrade or miss out.

I honestly can’t see these being used in ten/fifteen years time like you see with Cinema and Thunderbolt displays today.
