Cutting costs

...and not to pass on any savings to you and me
Well, the R&D to develop such things is not a cost? I think this is more like owning the tech and be more self sufficient, Development costs for such things are huge as they will constantly need to develop it further to keep up with future WIFI and BT versions. It is a huge endevour.

Apple is switching over to a new Bluetooth and Wi-Fi chip that it designed in-house starting in 2025, reports Bloomberg. The combined Bluetooth and Wi-Fi chip will replace components from Broadcom, allowing Apple to reduce its reliance on the company.

The chip, referred to as "Proxima" internally, will be introduced in Apple products starting in 2025. It will come to the iPhone 17 models, the Apple TV, and HomePod mini to begin with, and to the iPad and the Mac in 2026.

Apple's Bluetooth and Wi-Fi chip is distinct from the 5G modem chip that Apple is also designing, but eventually, Apple wants to combine these into a single component. The overarching goal is to create a wireless setup where the components are tightly integrated and more energy efficient, allowing Apple to cut down on the battery use of cellular, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth technologies.

Apple will also be able to create thinner devices and new wearable technology with the custom chips that it is creating.

Like Qualcomm, Broadcom is a company that has long supplied components to Apple for its devices. Apple does not want to continue to rely so heavily on parts from either Qualcomm or Broadcom, and it will also start phasing out Qualcomm modems in 2025. The iPhone SE, low-end iPad, and iPhone 17 Air are set to adopt Apple's custom 5G modem.

Apple won't be able to stop using components from Broadcom entirely, and it will still use a Broadcom-designed radio frequency filter for modems. Apple is also working with Broadcom on future cloud server chips.

Good move by Apple to become more independent from Broadcom & Qualcom & more efficient to boot.

Analog signal processing circuits don't benefit from smaller process nodes anymore, they will not be able to fully integrate the modems inside their ARM chips. They can certainly make a similar move like intel did with their laptop CPUs and use a similar technology like CNVio2 that keeps the processing logic and memory inside the SoCs and the RF components on a simpler die, with bigger (and cheaper) process nodes. Imagine it like what they do with SSDs currently. The controllers are located inside the silicon.

you are right, but we aren't talking about the analog parts.

Exactly. I think Apple is cutting space and probably a bit of costs and maybe power comsumption. iPhone Air will need all of it.
But the fear is the 1st generation product will achieve those goals by cutting performance. Maybe it will be alright, but I’m unwilling to pay hundreds of dollars to be a Guinea Pig for Apple.

Why would Apple combine it into one when most of their iPad lineup dont need or ship with 5G. It is more likely the WiFi and Bluetooth will remain a operate chip while 5G modem will integrate those function in the future.

Have you been ordered to do so? I only buys Apple products when there are know their strengths and weaknesses.

Bigger concern than the CPU of a computer?
The CPU from Apple has a solid history. If the CPU in the iPhone and iPad is solid (as it normally is) but, there are inherent problems with the modem which prevents people from making cals and communicating using said devices, the quality of the CPU is rather meaningless if the problem is with the Apple designed modem, in my opinion.
