kas23,

As of today, we're tracking 10,567 apps on AppBeacon.com . I don't know how AppShopper.com counts theirs, but I'm sure it's similar to ours. These are the actual number of unique apps in the store. Updates aren't included.

Cool, another site I can spend my whole day on. I love it! :D

"We wouldn't define our phone experience just by music. A phone is really a general purpose device," he summarized. "You want to make telephone calls, you want to get and receive messages, text, e-mail, whatever your preference is." - Steve Ballmer

Yeah, that a really stupid thing to say. As much as I get frustrated with my iPhone sometimes, it is hardly just a "music" phone. Then again, it would be cool if they made an iWork Mobile for it. I think this would give it just one more dimension.

Are you ***** kidding me? £342 for a PAYG phone, £100 more than ANY other O2 PAYG phone. £100 MORE for a phone with a crap camera that can't even record videos?

"This changed everything"

Yeah - it redefines the price ceiling of PAYG phones.

Doug

No I am not kidding, remember how much the first gen was even with a contract. I agree it's still pricy but i don't think it's THAT bad, 12 months unlimited data with a phone that is meant for it. If you want it as an internet device and only make use of the phone part every so often (as i suspect many iPhone users do), it is not that bad, especially compared to say a netbook. As for the £100 more than any other phone, the software alone puts this well ahead any other phone i know of (yes that includes the G1, for now at least).

I find it sad that I'm only interested in about 30 apps out of those thousands

A lot of crap and duplicates

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5G77 Safari/525.20)

I agree. Most of the stuff in the app store is rubbish!!!
But some is amazing!!!
I wish apple would come up with some more apps!

300 million...wow!

I wonder which application (probably for the Mac instead of iPhone) has had the most downloads out of the 300 million?

Try looking at the PAYG Nokia N96 price.....

so nearly 350 apps added in 3 days? WOW...that is really amazing...

the apps are what makes the iphone be heads and shoulders over any other smartphone......

No, just the distribution system.

WinMo alone has about 18,000 apps by official MS count. The Blackberries have over 3,000 on Handango alone. And nope, they're not all flashlights and other crap. If you took away all its duplicated apps, I think the iPhone would be down around 1,500 apps.

When the iPhone has turn-by-turn, Slingplayer, and allows the installation of interpreted code, then it will have hit real smartphone territory.

Let's be clear about one thing. They deserve bragging rights.

I think all those who pushed Apple to release an SDK, deserve to brag even more.

But those who said that we should be happy with whatever Apple gave us at the time (e.g. web apps), should be lined up along a wall and shot. (Might as well also line up those who continue to nay-say other things that people want. )

It never ceases to amaze me how someone who lacks any imagination could make it so high in the corporate world.
Ballmer was Bill Gates' college buddy, has surfed his coat tails for decades and probably knows where quite a few bodies are buried. That's how.

Hey cool! An Apple poster ad that won't (likely) get them sued for false advertising.

300M downloads and 10K apps averages out to mean of 30,000 downloads per app!

Probably a bimodal distribution, with around a million for the free apps and much less than 10k for most paid apps.

.

Yes, but some apps like Crash Bandicoot (paid) have done much better than most of the free apps. I agree that a lot of the free apps would get more downloads, because, if you download one, you are not taking any risk. If you don't like it, you can just delete it without have wasting any money.
