You have to hand it to Apple, the cheeky bastards. They take the choice away from their customer, then they bring it back but at a substantial fee… and people are actually grateful!

Just take a sip and it will all make sense. ;)

Matte making a comeback is a good news

But charging 45 euro for this is more like daylight robbery.
More and more it feels like apple is taking its customers for a ride:mad:

aren't anyone pissed off by this????????????

I'm very happy matte is back and while charging extra for it sucks, it's probably because it is more expense for Apple. They aren't going to produce as many (most consumers want glossy) therefore the smaller production runs are going to cost more. I agree, not the $50 they are charging, but that's Apple for you.

Remember when glossy used to cost more?

Anti-glare, yes, BUT IS IT THE SAME?

I've seen the anti-glare option posted online, but have not actually SEEN it in Apple stores or anywhere. WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE for those who have it. I know it is NOT the same as the old Mac screens, like the one I have on my white iMac 2.16 GHz Core 2 Duo. I actually bought this machine even thought the new glossy iMacs were available because of the screen.

The new option is still the GLASS with a COATING. That's not the "old Mac screen" which was a soft plastic(?). I am sure this is due to the new LED screens. The old LCD screens had different materials. I fear we will never go back to the true old Mac screens. But I hope something can be made with the new materials.

So, again, for anyone who actually HAS or has seen and played with in real life, the anti-glare coated glass screen... what are your thoughts??

^^ The 17 inch had a true matte screen like on our old MBP's (and PB's and PC's)

Eh, not sure about expresscard slot. Almost everyone never used it. I'd prefer SD anytime these day! :p

I would want a CF slot over a SD slot if it had to be a memory card slot. But if SD came default and you could change to expresscard I would still be happy.
I hope they accept returns without a restock fee for those who would prefer to have matte. I don't know why they do this mid-stream really.

Why would they buy it if they knew Apple was going to offer it again soon? (well they would if they read MacRumors)

lol...you sound surprised. This is what Apple does best: Brilliant marketing.

If you want something non-standard, you have to pay for it... even if it's the worse option or older technology--ESPECIALLY older, out of date technology.

So finally the glass screen is (almost) universally recognized as the "inexpensive" version by Apple, aka lower quality. To me the real question is whether they will completely abandon glass in the next iteration (because it doesn't look good on Apple to be offering a lower quality version of their Pro line) or in the one thereafter.

If you want the displays on the 15" to also have higher resolution, vote here:

They won't, which is entirely in their right. I'm rather disappointed that they added it a month after I bought one with a glossy screen, but I'll live.

If they did some would conplain that it's not true matte

People can (and will) always complain, it is our right (and duty) as customers.

Heck, I always complain about laptops having far too great a viewing angle; for business use I have to use polarizers whenever I'm on public, because I and my company do not want everyone seeing what I'm doing. I remember the time when such films were simply not necessary, because screens could only be viewed from very narrow angle... Now screens are too good and we must use tricks to get the same effect (for extra cost of course) :p

This is great news for every friend of Apple.

Would be great to have this option for the 13" MBP as well. The glass is really bad. the old glossy screens, like on the air, (without the glass) are ok though, IMHO.

Charging more for it is not that much of a deal, people. Think about how prices used to be! These MBP now are quite cheaper, and you probably wouldn't cry about it if the glassy ones were 100 Dollars more, so you could feel some kind of price reduction for the "less equipped" matte displays......

When buying a Mercedes Benz, you pay more if you do not want the name of the model on the back ("E320", e.g.) at least it used to be like that - it is all about production costs, not material costs. Or, if you prefer, "Economies of scale" ....

If people will prefer the matte over the gloss, this will reverse! :D

I still think people need to keep putting pressure on Apple by commenting at petition sites such as http://macmatte.wordpress.com because until matte gets back to the iMac, Cinema Display and even the 13", the Jobs only half done.
