Too bad Apple didn’t get acquired/got more involved with Disney - macOS Pluto. macOS Donald Duck would be perfect under this US President 😉

But wait they can use planets as OS iOS Moon and stretch a bit further macOS Jupiter etc

Apple under Tim Cook are really all the grey-variations, and there’s plenty of them.

At this pace they all should just be named xxxOS Beta, but use the greek beta symbol aka "macOS ß", "iOS ß", etc etc. 🤣

Oh Timmy unnecessary unneeded

But we are going to call it the iPhone 17 instead of iPhone 26?!?!? The hardware would make more sense. And even that doesn’t.

Moving entirely to a naming scheme like:

iOS '26
iPhone (2026)
iPhone Pro (2026)

...makes a lot of sense.

Only the software actually needs a version number so it has to be "26.0" internally, but it can easily be marketed and referred to as iOS '26 or iOS 2026.

So glad this is coming to pass. This will reduce complexity, confusion and mistakes all around. Long overdue.

I’ve been proposing this multiple times in the Mac Rumors comment threads for years.

At the same time I’ve similarly proposed a calendar year based naming scheme for apples product lines. Very much hope Apple carries through with this.

The macOS place names are nice but not memorable or easily related to year of release. They can even still be used in macOS (and, if desired, thematically extended across other OS’s) in marketing but in documentation and literature, the calendar (not generational or theme) based naming convention will make everything easier and better to work with.

This change opens up marketing opportunities as well as addressing needed improvements.

Bravo Apple. (Just don’t screw this up by not calendarizing product names).

Simplify.

iOS 26.
iPhone 26.
etc.
