"In a newsletter outlining the possible future of the company's WWDC conference taking place in an in-person format".

Well that ain't happening.

Would Apple even release a product that would be that niche?
Looking towards the future AR/VR glasses will replace screens you would otherwise have... as a video editor or developer you would stare at a wall and edit with your hands or Bluetooth mouse and keyboard.

with really good AR VR glasses no one will buy screens again. The whole family will just have prescription glasses

Games are by far the most popular category in the app store.
How about we call it ARPower since they likely will have the same ending.

Dear Apple, please only announce things AFTER they have passed QA and are ready to release to market.

You know what's the thing with those Minority Report gimmicks? They look great for concept videos and "vision" clips like Microsoft's 10 years ago, but in real life nobody really wants to use them for their day to day work and you only see them in "experience studios" of big companies.

Mixed-Reality Headset

This is Tim Cook's baby. Let's get it.
Let's be real. The AAPL stock is Tim Cook's baby. His amazing "pipeline' is still a talking point since 2011.

Except it replaces every screen you ever own... just pair your accessories (mouse keyboard controller pencil)... You will never have to own a TV, Phone, Watch, iPad, Monitors, projector etc...
Try convincing phone users to use some bulky headset over what they do now first. :D

I already jump when someone tries to approach me while I am wearing headphones. When I'm immersed in a screen as well... I'll have a heart attack within a week.

If the resolution is dual 8K streams, this has to be a wired headset. Intel's VR WiGig can't to that right?

VR/AR is the technology that is eternally just around the corner.

I participated in a very exciting VR demo in 1992 and could quickly grasp the possibilities, however now 29 years later and it's still not ready for primetime. I've used the latest Valve and HTC headsets and of course the resolution has improved, but it is definitely still not ready for primetime. My estimate is 2050 before it reaches any kind of widespread acceptance.

It's always amusing to see each new generation get excited about VR, only to have it end up sitting on a dusty shelf.

VR/AR is a solution in search of a problem.

Oh, I don't know. Apple are experts at making you still need the others to connect with the new...

I don't see how this is even remotely worth their time. VR is nothing but a vomit-inducing gimmick and is not nearly immersive enough to be worth it.

Why would Apple even bother in this space?

By doing it better than the competition? Just because everyone else has done a crap job doesn't mean they shouldn't try. Smartphones before the iPhone were terrible.

Oculus sits in my closet collecting dust. If Apple's headset is anything like this, I'll skip. I don't have interest in pay-to-play iOS games in AR/VR, especially the ones that advertise as Age of Empires but in reality look like a re-themed zombie survival game with credit card smashers destroying your base every 10 days.

For me personally, my only day to day use for this would be to better manage and arrange windows in my workflow (ie: minority report style). would be great to have some depth of field and see 'behind' my outlook window to my 'word' window so i don't have to shuffle around and resize apps. I'm not a fan of the idea of wearing these while watching TV and also scrolling the web or instagram. i can't see that being healthy for your brain or eyes.

I think Apple is trying to cast a wider net than just games, but i would imagine that games would be the most financially successful aspect of the headset market.
I hope there is more too it than just games. I hope Apple can put a different spin on it and make it great. Let’s not forget that Apple made the smart watch popular, there is not other smart watch that’s even in the same league.
I tried the Galaxy Watch 3 and it was terrible. I hated it, from the design to the software. So let’s hope Apple can do something great with this headset.

Actually, mixed (or augmented) reality headsets are a tech before it's time. I worked at a large shall-not-be-named silicon valley concern where we tested Microsoft's HoloLens with systems designed by Intel and our company for use in energy substation service and support. There's some amazing things that can be done with these if properly supported by a back-end infrastructure. I don't see nearly as many tech-toy uses for these as industrial.

Unless I’m misreading the context of the source article. Apple won’t announce this until they have in person events. Question is, when will they start doing that and when would be a good time to announce this rumored product? I still think it’ll be next year the earliest all things considered.
