I was interested in buying one but after looking at them in the store I didn’t. I can live with the camera and battery capacity but the premium price and limited color options, black and three shades of white, were a deal breaker. I’ve gone case-less and need a color that is interesting.
Interesting they’re considering lowering the price of the 2nd gen. Maybe consider doing the same for the 1st? Also I haven’t seen any ads for them. 17 Pro? Yep. 17? Yep. So odd they aren’t promoting it.

I'm skeptical about being able to add a 2nd camera, without some compromising on some of the physical traits.

Re: lower price

Why don't they test that, now, with iPhone Air v1 by the lowering the prices to see if it sells better?

I'd do that before investing in an updated version.
I was going to buy it but why? 999 for something that is way worse than the pro? The only selling factor is the size and that gets nullified immediately when you put it in a case.

I love my air. I was not liking the weight of the 16 & 17 pro models.

The air slips in my pocket and is so unobtrusive, sometimes I would momentarily panic, "My Phone!" and them reach down and feel it.

I had the 16 pro, and this huge heavy thing was bounching around. So I stayed with 15 pro.

The one speaker is limiting, but the camera I really could not care about. I have a full frame Nikon and good glass if I want to take pictures. A cell phone camera has got a long march to approach that kind of hardware.

Its fast, its light and the screen is beautiful.

It's really quite simple in my eyes.

The Air needs to be at least as good as the base 17 for people to consider it IMO. The base 17 was so good many even opted for that over the Pro this time. Dual cameras and stereo/dual speakers are needed to make it feel like you're not compromising at minimum.

I think we would all love a "thin sheet of glass" for our iPhone, but you can't compromise on just about everything to deliver it.

Such minimalistic products, especially diminutive in size (thickness in this case), and with simplified feature set, are often seen as feminine. Women also tend to be more frugal so such products are also often less expensive.

For examples look at cars targeted towards women.

Apple missed the boat on expecting the air to sell for a premium, expecting it to be a fashion statement.

Rather than having the "pro" chip inside, if it was kept more affordable and released as a 16e replacement I bet it would have sold like hotcakes.

I view the Air, and most tech I have now, more like a nicely tailored suit. Just enough, and no waste. The Pro models are fine, but a waste if you aren’t using your phone as a professional photographer or videographer.

I think they are lowering the price but maybe on the sly? My wife and son each got one from AT&T. The phone bill went down and my son got an Apple Watch SE for a nickel and my wife got an iPad Air for a nickel.

Their current phones weren’t on any payment plans so I’m not sure how the phone bill went down after adding 2 phones to existing lines.

The air is the best phone I’ve ever owned. Don’t think I’ll be interested in the fold so will definitely be up for an air 2.

The battery is only limited vs the 17 pros. It’s as good if not better than any other iPhone that came before it, including the 16 pro.

A price reduction and ultra wide would surely go a long way to improve sales.

I think some previous Pro Max models technically had better battery life, but I agree with your overall point. It’s be easily missed/willfully ignored in all of the discourse around the iPhone Air.

I think Apple is worried it would set a precedent for price adjustments, i.e., if the price was lowered after release then customers may think other iPhones could lower in price if they wait to purchase them later.

Having said that, if sales are truly that bad, it would seem worth it in this case rather than being so stubborn and potentially sacrificing sales of a device where customers find the price a big sticking point.

I do not get who the air is for? Is the iPhone too heavy and thick for some? It just seems ridiculous. I rather have other features. I can carry something thicker.
It's for people who want a bigger phone but dont want to spend a ton of money on the Pro Max for features they will NEVER use.

It would have been interesting in an alternative universe if the iPhone 17 started at $899 or the iPhone Air started at $899. The latter makes more sense but either price would have boosted iPhone Air sales.
