I bought my first TV streaming device in 2015 and it was the 4th gen Apple TV. There are probably better products out there that are cheaper but it does everything I need it to. The only thing I dislike about the Apple TV is the remote, it's a garbage idea and product. Hopefully they will go with a different remote.

I'm ready for an upgrade as my 4th gen is struggling with the latest TVOS.

I had the 2nd generation AppleTV for years and it works great, no problems.

Finally replaced it with the latest 4th generation 4K version this past September, just before tvOS 13. It was okay, but I wasn't too impressed. The upgrade to tvOS 13 was a big leap forward!

The only problem we experience is the Netflix app slowing down to a crawl over time! So annoying! A reboot fixes that, but that should not be needed.

I just think they need to make this entire product lineup much less expensive and get much more install base out there.

Nothing about this hardware or software is particularly uniquely compelling, let alone worth the exorbitant mark up.

The Apple TV is one of those products that are too good for their own sake – I couldn’t think of a reason to switch from my Apple TV 4K.

Heck, I would still use my Apple TV 3 if it wasn’t for 4K-capabilities.

AppleTV 3? No you wouldn’t. Have you tried using one lately? I have one in my bedroom and the lack of new apps and the show speed of it makes it difficult to use. Or are you referring to the 4?

So basically if you don’t use Arcade and/or play games on Apple TV, the storage upgrades are pointless?

Honestly, Apple should just make:
  • Apple TV (current 4K model with 32gb storage) $129
  • Apple TV Arcade (256gb storage + a controller) $249
Considering Xbox One S All-Digital Edition retails at $249, which includes gaming controller and few games, and is routinely discounted to around $170 by various retailers, Apple will be ridiculed at $249 price point.

$199 is the max Apple can realistically charge.

I agree. $199 should be the limit. Also, I’d imagine Apple would want the controller to be 1st party Apple designed and branded, and I do hope they make one.

Recently learned that Airplay works without being connected to WiFi which gives the Apple TV 1+ over other choices. This is important to me so that I can cast videos to my projector while not connected to WiFi.

My 4th gen works great still, but I’m in the market for another. I have heard these rumblings about a new one coming so I’m just waiting.

the 32GB has been plenty for me, but I have occasionally run out or low. This is because I didn’t want to set up Plex (or choose your service) to stream from my desktop because I like to keep my desktop sleeping or off and don’t want 2 devices running just to watch the vids. So I’d load up my movies into VLC and play locally on the ATV. I don’t do this very often, but it is handy. More storage would be nice for that reason.
If the ATV got keyboard and mouse support and the Files app and other office apps, it could be a nice little TV computer for quick things. That might make more storage a useful thing.

I don’t mind the remote. It annoys me occasionally. It gets lost easily. But I find that the touch pad is often faster and easier to use to navigate content than, say a Roku remote. So I want Apple to do better, but I don’t want them to go backwards either.

Fix the buggy Apple TV app and get rid of all the tacky ads. That’s what we need.

In addition to increasing storage, I hope they increase the usability of the remote. Everything about the remote needs an overhaul. The ATV is the most un-Apple-like product made by Apple.

This is the exact opposite of what I want from them. I love my old 2nd gen Apple TV, but it's not getting new apps like Dinsey+, and I can't justify paying over $100 to stay in Apple's ecosystem when there are so many way cheaper options. I just got a firestick on sale for $20 for my basement TV and it works great. I'm an Apple fan and have no issue paying the Apple tax when it's within reason, but these things are just overkill for most people.

I agree...but Apple doesn’t care and I promise you they’d charge more than you and I think is reasonable.

totally agree.

The ATV’s are priced and specced in a way that feels like they are a solution looking for a problem that doesn’t exist.

They really need an ATV equivalent of a chromecast or Roku stick

Can’t believe would be until November or December. I would think Apple’s margin is high on the ATV and could pick up store purchases. So would think want released ASAP. Been 2 years, think they have milked it throughly.

Screentime for Apple TV would be great! Would love to be able to restrict viewing time, etc for my kids. (Yes, I already do this the old fashioned way, but screentime would be helpful!)

I have owned 3 and two are in the trash and the third is in a drawer. The remote is sooooo bad and I can load more apps on Prime or a Fire TV. Apple missed the home streaming market, my 5 Echos are proof.

I’m personally very intrigued by the apparently upcoming new Chromecast Ultra with a remote!

2 weeks ago 9to5Mac had an article on it passing through FCC

That may very well be my ”next” in this space.
Chromecasts are great, but I’ve always wanted a remote for them so they are more couch/multi user accessible on the fly, and to control my soundbar with IR

I have the 32Gb model and I barely use my storage...what on earth does it need all that storage for?
My guess is some are using it for games which take a lot more storage. Honestly they should have done this when they released Arcade and upgraded the SOC as well. I don’t really care as I’ve never used the storage on my 32gb and since the App Store continues to be a sad wasteland since launch I’ve never gotten into gaming on it.

Wouldn't it be crazy if they allowed you to hook up a bluetooth mouse and keyboard to the ATV and run productivity apps? There's no reason why they couldn't do that with a little effort. They'd sell a boatload of ATVs as they could be used as super cheap computer.

HOWEVER, it would cease to be an ATV at that point, and Apple would never do it. What a game changer it could be though if they created a Mac running iOS with this form factor! The Mac micro perhaps? ;)

Adding the AirPort Extreme to that list (still using it because it continues to outperform the latest and greatest hyped wireless routers I've bought and returned).

Please, iPad Air 64GB upgraded to 128GB too!

I hope that in the future the tvOS gets an adapted version of iPadOS's mouse support and becomes an "iPadOS with no touch screen", meaning that the tvOS will have Files, Safari, Microsoft Office etc.

Interesting thoughts, do you think this would be a mainstream market - people working on their TV sets?
