oversell the underproduction!

great story man!

This just in for all the conspiracy theories.

There are 12 million iPad minis in a Cupertino warehouse and Apple is holding them back.

There are another 15 million on the East Coast and Apple is holding them back.

How do I know?

I am an analyst!

I hesitated but in the end I just went ahead and purchased the 16GB Black. It's my preferred color/storage combination as I surf the web and stream all my content.

I hesitated because I hardly use my iPad 3 but thats because of the size and weight. I bet I will be reaching for the iPad mini allot! It will be allot nicer to have on the go and use in public places too.

I barely got myself awake to order a black one around 3:20 am eastern time. I think the whites were available at that time but didn't pay attention because I wasn't looking for that color anyway. hopefully these black ones don't have scuffing issues.

I don't think anyone expected anything like an iPhone launch. No other product that Apple sells will have that type of launch.

They checked out the apps available for the Nexus compared to the iPad. That was one of the biggest reason I got rid of my Android tablet and vowed to never go back. Very few true tablet applications and way too may phone applications that suck and look ridiculous on the bigger screen. Then again, that was 8 months ago. Maybe things changed.

You make me laugh. In one breath you say you swear never to use android tablets and admits your view is 8 month out of date.

I wouldn't trust an analyst even if it meant short selling eurobonds to the chinese and making a gazillion. Oh wait...

Truly remarkable. Apple once again fail to supply enough product even without jaw-dropping pre-orders. Absolutely astonishing Apple got such small stock to be sold out in less than an hour for a product the fandroids said was average and ridiculously overpriced.

Another big fail of Timmy. Who call him "Genius of supply chain"? :D:D:D:D

This is what Apple is thinking: We didn't even have to price it at lower than $300 for it to sell out in 17 minutes. We win!

Lol. I sold my iPad 3 and got one in black. This screen better not be too pixelated. #

Exactly. Apple could have easily priced it higher and it still would have sold out in a few minutes. When they put that Apple logo on it nothing else matters.

Apple never ran out of anything while Steve was there.

On the other hand, they have changed the size of every product already. Now, where is the innovation again?

You're new on this planet aren't you?

Did someone say every single product they release has to be full of mind blowing innovation?
Was there awesome innovation in the iPod mini?
Find something real to complain about.

Yay 4th gen ipad! ... the mini is not for me so this doesnt really bother me that they are delayed. Just means I get my 4th gen quicker since a lot of people went the mini route.

Also, what is this cellular model mini will be out in mid november? Who the hell would want to hold that to their head to call someone?

This was the risk of releasing it so close to the holidays. It was a bit short-sided, IMO to release a new product at this time.

I definitely see this happening:

Dad:What do you want for Christmas, Johnny?
Johnny: An iPad! I'll use it to help me with my school work and make reminders so I never forget to do my chores!
Dad: Let me ask your mom. (They agree)

3 weeks before Christmas
Wife: The iPad mini does all the things the iPad does and is a lot cheaper! Let's go to the store and get one of those for Johnny and his sister!

Drives to best buy
Clerk: I'm sorry ma'am we're sold out. But we do have stock of the 7" Tablet from X which is $130 cheaper!
Parents relieved.

No iPad is bought because Apple can't keep up with supply.

I don't know why they can never make enough. Secrecy is already out the window, so there's presumably no disadvantage to ramping up production early to make enough.

I could see that happening as well.
There is always a huge spike of demand when these things get issued. Having the manufacturing capability lined up to handle the first month would result in tremendous over capacity very quickly. It is expensive to get a factory geared up and trained to produce a product. You can't just have a factory do this for two weeks during the launch and then switch to something else. And Apple doesn't want to spend months stockpiling a new product without selling it. Storing it would be expensive and also the product gets a little stale. It was important to launch this Mini before the Surface. As I think the Surface is the iPads first legit competition.

You forgot to add them returning it on Dec. 26.

Cellular to get internet access on the go. While you could skype and facetime with it, you aren't intended to make calls.

That's the one that I'd be interested in. But the 32 GB is $529 and that is not an impulse level purchase for me.

I wonder why white is so popular now. Black used to be more popular not long ago.

The "slate" looks weird/unnatural. The aluminium finish of the white looks more "natural". If Apple went back to the black & non-anodized aluminium, I bet the black would sell more.

How else do you get black looking aluminum?

oversell the underproduction!

great story man!

Yeah, that's what Apple is going to to do, not sell as many as they can for the holiday quarter so they can have a crappy Q1 earnings report. That'll impress Wall Street. (Also nevermind that Apple typically announces pre-order sales... actual sales. So that itself kinda underminds your silly theory).

The mini is already coming out on the tail end of the holiday season. The LTE version doesn't even ship until a week before Black Friday. Typically after Black Friday most holiday sales are cooked. So Apple has zero room to hold back inventory IF that was a plan. It's not, but clearly you got your MBA degree from U. of Folklore and Myths, so I understand why you think its a viable one.

jeez guyz,

I am not a conspiracy theorist, the notion of apple keeping back stock is ridiculous since it's inception. I was just ironic to people who would jump about wearing beanies & wiping public telephones.

jeeeeez

Surely you're joking:

Do you see anywhere in that quote that I said Apple introduced innovation with the mini? You did notice on tuesday that a number of other products besides the mini were introduced which DID contain innovations, did you? The list I provided earlier contained a few of these: bonded touchscreen and LCD panel, Fusion drive.

Again, do not try to put words into my mouth. I know what I said before.

OK then. Now I get the sarcasm, but it was a little too believable, given some of the posts on this site, so understand why I jumped. A sarc tag would have be helpful to the less observant like myself, esp in the AM. :)

I think the shortage is a politcal trick of (pick your party) in an attempt to influence the election.
I'm an analyst, lawyer and weather forecaster - got it all covered.:(

Seems like there are plenty of black ones left though. Definitely not as big a launch as the iP5, even if they have more stock.

It was like that for the 3rd gen iPad as well. I'm guessing the stores will have lots of them next week.

With the 3rd gen iPad they limited pre-orders to ensure they had sufficient store stock. I'm guessing it is the same today.
